Yeah, yeah, but that's just being pedantic IMO. I'm trying to use the exact terminology of a self-proclaimed fanboy.

This thread makes me want to vomit in terror. Seriously, I wonder about the mental health of some of the people here. Shit like this....
If you want overrated play on an Xbox, How something can be popular with the most limited variety of games and virtually no effort from developers to do anything out of the ordinary for 3+ years is an amazing achievement.
... and some of the stuff I've seen quoted amazes me. People can be so damn ignorant (or just plain stupid) it makes me wish Flanders was dead. Also, the Dreamcast is a fackin' cant!

That's more like it. I'm learning so many new words in this thread.

I love that owl. It's so cute with its big eyes. But it's probably a zoo owl so it'd bite me. Bitch.

Probably because its true, If the system did have a decent scope of variety then maybe the Japanese would have taken to it.

@Pa/Ganelon: Hmm, the line between a "fanboy" and a "fan who really really likes [thing X] but is still capable of admitting [thing X]'s faults and shortcomings and generally acts like a polite person" can be very thin indeed.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

It's got some pretty good games from Capcom and Sega. I like it OK. Worth owning for the 3rd Strike port alone.

Annoyingly, it's something I see a lot around the internet. (Although not necessarily here.)
Some people spend more time ranting about their made-up internet 'personality' and how it justifies all their idiotic posts than actually contributing anything decent to the community.

And as for you, Dreamcast - well, you're not too old to go over my knee.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

It does have variety. However, most of it tends to be within western genres rather than Japanese ones. Instead of Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy X it has Halo 2 and Knight of the Old Republic. It's no huge surprise why it did better in America than Japan.

Actually, I think it's just a reflection of certain peoples uncanny ability to play up the good aspects of certain platforms ( Dreamcast, Naomi) and completely ignore the positive aspects and games of other platforms (Xbox).

Whoah man, I think I've actually witnessed phenomena like you've described. That is crazy. Especially for people who like videogames.

Whats the positive aspect of the Xbox for people who like varied games when its lineup is totally US centric?

You can't be closed minded when you want variety and more options.

Closed minded people are the ones who can't recognise there is a problem with the Xbox lineup.

Sorry.

I'd tell those people to open their eyes and not dismiss the variety of games because they are "US centric". I'm sorry that there aren't more horse racing sims and dating games, but there are great Japanese made games like Otogi, Ninja Gaiden, Guilty Gear, Street Fighter 3, Daisenryaku, Panzer Dragoon, Phantom Dust, etc etc... but what does that matter right?

No, closeminded people are the people that say something like no developer in 3+ years noone has tried to do anything out of the ordinary on the Xbox. Dismissing and ignoring stuff that is good because it doesn't fall in to someones narrow focus is the very definition of closeminded.

Hey man, you don't have to apolgize to me. Your not being able to determine that there are some titles on the XBOX worthy of the attention of Japanese-centric nitpicklers is in no way causing me pain.

Besides, being a fanboy means never having to say "I'm sorry". Remember that for the future.

If I was a fanboy I wouldn't bother owning or enjoy the other consoles so thats a worthless comment. My two favourite games were made by brittish developers so I have no interest in a console having a Japanese bias either.

Of course there are a few decent games on the Xbox but compared to whats available elsewhere its not doing many favours for its owners.

Okay, I'll bite:

Define "varied games", "US centric games" and tell me what the "few decent games" on the system are.

Also, the Dreamcast's lineup was almost entirely Japan-centric. Is that somehow more varied by default? Just curious.

I just remembered that no so long ago your name at Gamers.com was "Otaku_Kron" and that you're the guy who badly wanted a large stack of used Japanese Dreamcast magazines from me, so I'm guessing the quoted statement is just plain false?

seth - Are you joking?

Dreamcast's US lineup may seem more "japan centric" because those are the titles that are better remembered.

In actuality it was pretty much split down the middle between western and japanese games

Dreamcast had a decent number of western-developed sports games - both traditional (football, hockey, basketball) and 'extreme' (tony hawk skateboarding, dave mirra bmx).

Many of the racing games were also western - 4 Wheel Thunder and Hydro Thunder, Star Wars Racer, Speed Devils, POD Speedzone, Looney Tunes Space Race, Wacky Races, etc.

Dreamcast also got a lot of the disney games - Donald Duck Goin Quackers, 102 Dalmatians, Disney World Racing Tour, etc.

There's even a few FPS games on the DC like Quake III and Unreal Tournament courtesy of western developers.

I think it's likely the reason people don't remember most of the western titles is because they were, for the most part, multiplatform releases rather than exclusives.
You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

What are you? The master of over exaggeration? That gamers.com account was a joke I set up for the fanitsu board what 5 years ago and must have made 6 posts with.

I didn't "badly" want those magazines, If I had "badly" wanted them I would have paid the very high postage cost.
sethsez wrote: Also, the Dreamcast's lineup was almost entirely Japan-centric.
You are completely incorrect, Around 1/3 of the systems catalogue in PAL and NTSCU format are actually western developed games.

Fair enough, I'll concede I was wrong there.

However, I still don't see why "US games" are being lumped together as if it's one cohesive genre.

eh, you've got me there.

I will say that it's often pretty easy to tell the difference between a japanese and a western game though... and not just because every name in the credits is more than four syllables.

I thought Neon's "Deadcast" was amusing, although not as brilliant as Gheystation Poo or Saturd.

Dreamcast had a very short life, but also a very creative one. I think Rez is still among the PS2 top five, Arcadia among the best rpgs NGC has to offer... And then, JSR, Space Channel, Crazy Taxi... Bottom line is that as short its life was, it managed to do a lot more than Sega "I can handle a CPS2 port yay" Saturn.

Actually... Sega should have canned 32X and SS and go to DC directly, a year before 1999. That would have been something cool to witness.

Then again, DC has the worst pad ever.

Heh, sorry, my ramblings are way too serious for this thread :) But yeah, bloodflowers got a point about systems and games... They are not so easily separated. How could you imagine Kirby's Canvas Curse without its native hardware?

I mean, of course 90% of the quality a game is imbued with comes from the art of men. But I also think it's safe to say that everyone loves when a GOOD hardware is released... Just like the feeling you have riding a good car, isn't it? The Amiga was a remarkable piece of hardware - many so so developers owe their fame to being able to develop on it back then. The NES or the Gameboy on the contrary were quite average systems for their time - not crappy, but surely no groundbreaking - and yet they both witnessed hundreds of awesome games.

Some games are so great just because they were created on a specific hardware... It's perspective, like all things. If today a Recca clone is released for PS2, I can be amused, but overall I feel meh... Recca's own merits are not on the visual / audio design imho, but on the overall impact it does on the FC user. Because they did break limits like no one thought it was possible. Then, once you chill out you realize that as cool as it is, Gradius II is probably still a better game. (btw, don't start an argue over this - if you think otherwise it's perfectly legit and understandable - it's for the sake of the discussion).

Oh c'mon, while the DC's directional pad is VERY bad, it has nothing on the diminutive d-pad on the gamecube. It is something like the evolved uselessness of t-rex forearms. It is too small, uncomfortable and insensitive to use. The dc's d-pad is better than that!

I disagree. The DC pad doesn't even have rounded edges and it's not rubberized like the GCN pad. The only real problem (which doesn't bother my medium sized hands too much, to be honest) with the GCN pad is that it's small.
