I have an ethernet cable running under the house which leads from the router in the living room to the stuff I have sitting here. Two of them, in fact. A wireless adapter isn't a requirement. I wouldn't recommend playing online games wirelessly even if I was given the chance, because I know that shit lags.

The problem is that you're worried about your purchase dying on you. So what. Just have it sent in and replaced for free. The failure rate is irrelevant now that Microsoft have agreed to cover all expenses, not just the RRoD. I understand not wanting to purchase a lemon, but a 360 isn't a lemon, nor is a PS3 if you choose one. But one should be chosen for the games, not for the console durability. This might apply when buying other hardware, but not here.

Good points. How did you get an ethernet cable running under your house? I was unaware that MS have agreed to cover all expenses; that is definitely a good thing to know.

Coolness! The thing is, I've never, on IGN, or elsewhere, seen any press releases from Microsoft. It would be really nice to see a site that tells their side of the story and answers questions from detractors of the 360.

And it's not just the build quality; how about the $100 highway robbery price tag for Microsoft's wireless network adapter for something that the console should already be able to do? (And people complain about Wii motion plus. ) Hard wiring is last generation (along with the tray they built into the system, which is just one of many things MS won't fix under their warranty, should it break). There's a reason why about half of 360 owners don't have XBL accounts. The adapter and the $50 price tag just to play online, which MS also hasn't lowered.

You could always get the Xbox 1 wireless adapter, which is cheaper and works on the 360.

You can find XBL Gold cards for less than $50 if you shop around.

There aren't enough detractors to bother the sales figures, so I suppose they think it's unecessary.

It's currently enjoying huge popularity as a console, regardless of its failure issues, and that partly has to be down to decent customer support.
I don't know what everyone is waiting for to be honest, it's as cheap as chips to buy, one year of Xbox live will convince you the fee was worth it, and there's a shitload of great, exclusive titles.

There's nothing wrong with owning a PS3 too, just don't let stubborn allegiances do you out of a fantastic gaming experience - it's all happening right now and those online servers are busy.

This doesn't really seem to be where the conversation in this thread is, but I'd like to take a moment to bitch and moan here about my 360 red-ringing. It was a first-gen one (got it like the first week or two) and the fact that it lasted this long is possibly amazing (if some of the numbers about defects I've read are true). I still have a working (knock on wood) Japanese one though...

There's still enough on the horizon for the system that I do plan on replacing it. I might see if I can find some sort of bundle bargain this holiday season.

But if you have a Japanese 360, who would you call? If not someone in the US, that could be a real problem. That's the only worry I would have about getting a Japanese 360.

I'll give it a try I guess. The extended warranty program has already run out, and given the level of service I've gotten from them on the phone (I had to call about my Live account a few times), I'm not expecting anything.

If you have a Japanese 360, you don't call at all. What you do is register the console on the Xbox Support site, check the warranty status there, and fill out the repair order online. Then why are they coming out with this additional adapter? Why would they even need to unless people are having problems getting a reliable signal from the existing adapter?

It's not a matter of reliability, it's about having the bandwidth necessary for streaming full HD video and music. Did you even read the article?

Because Wireless n is the new standard and the old one supports b and g. If you bought a new wireless n router then now you can get an adapter that takes advantage of it (it will use the old standards too)
