I'm an outlier but I quit fighters for shmups a couple years ago because shmups can be played whenever I happen to have a little bit of free time, and don't require going anywhere. There's still some social and competitive component thanks to the internet, but it's obviously no replacement for a local scene.

Keeping up with the FG scene required going to biweekly ranbats, once-or-twice-a-week local sessions, etc, in addition to training mode practice at home. It was a lot of fun, but it was just too much of a time commitment to keep up with.
This is exactly what I’m talking about, and exactly the reason why I have (all but) quit fighting games for shmups.

Keres- do you think there is a similar feeling when playing fighters and shmups, in terms of the intensity and execution?

I guess you could draw some similarities, in that both involve precise execution, and controlling your nerves during tense situations. I'd say it's generally less stressful to route/learn a shmup than it is to try to figure out a skilled live opponent during a match, though.

I also played fighters competitively before jumping ship to this side.

I won't rehash anything that has already been said - Keres and STG4WD have summed it up pretty well. Particularly in regards to the amount of time it takes to stay competitive.

I will add though that I still head down to 8 Bit and Up here in NY once a month or so. On Sunday nights they have what they call the 8 Bit Dojo - It's bunch of (mostly) guys hanging out playing SF, although on occasion MK or some Tekken players will come down.

No matter what shooter I'm playing inevitably one or two of them will come over and watch at least for a little while. I will usually get a controller in one of their hands too :D
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

I am massive fan of fighting games. I have at least 1000 hours into USF4. I have tried and tried to get my fighting game buddies into shmups, and whilst I can see they respect it as fellow hardcore gamers, I haven't really been able to get them into it properly. I think they play for the competitiveness of it, and the fact that the difficulty of fighting games all depends on your opponent, also there are massive misconceptions about shmups being impossible.

To go back on topic of this thread, why should we care if people 1cc a game or not. As long as they play the game and have fun that's all that matters imo. I've got plenty of friends to enjoy Ikaruga or even Gradius 3 of all games. Whether they end up developing 1337 skills to 1cc games or not isn't really that important.

I imagine there's quite an overlap between fighting game fans and shmup fans.

You have that arcade heritage, fast pace, and high skill ceiling that is probably attractive to both camps.

I was serious about fighters long before I got serious about shmups. But I didn't jump ship, I play both. I think in my case it was because I was interested in arcade culture in general. When you are in actual arcades all the time its easy to get exposed to and be impressed by other genres.

But the thing is, fighters are much easier to get into if you are satisfied with moderate levels of success. The difference between a satisfactory 50%+ win rating in a fighter and a basic shmup 1cc is pretty huge actually, or at least it appears that way to the uninitiated.

I was hanging out a lot in Taito Hey! around the time Pink Sweets first hit, and I remember watching the pros play it in total awe while taking a break from fighters. All the games looked like that to me, so I thought it probably took a special type of savant to beat them. The second floor shmup room of Hey! at that time looked like where all the 40+ year old fighting game vets went to retire and smoke, after becoming sick of all the scrubs upstairs.

I never thought shmups were impossible, but I did think they were fucking insane. That myth runs deep.

Oh and it was mentioned before, but there is a fundamental difference in the two. FG is about dominating a person, and STG is about dominating the game itself. One does not really replace the other for me, and I always enjoyed both. So if someone wasn't particularly interested in dominating on a software level, I couldn't see them getting into STG even if they respect it.

I didn't really "quit" but I kind of reeled back my fighter interest in favor of shmups. However, that was more of a general effort to diversify my gaming interests and branch out into a multitude of genres.

People buy lots of single player games that are about the same. Only difference is that they require more effort to make progress. But hey, it's not like you can't enjoy the games putting a casual credit in every few weeks.

I feel like the only thing that can "fix" the gaming industry at this point, is if gamers just "grow up" and start actually wanting engaging/challenging stuff instead of wanking to qte's all day. We might see a slight shift the way things are going, but who knows.

Highly unlikely. It's "grown ups" gamers who are central auditory of those "cinematic experience" "games are serious form of art" etc.
When you come home after hard work you dont wanna be "raped by some stupid game". No, you just relax yourself with Last of Us or smth. And it's children/teens who could more likely play things on hard for different reasons.
When you are in actual arcades all the time its easy to get exposed to and be impressed by other genres.
Jealous( Here, there are no arcade centres (only separate cabs in some cinemas and shopping centres), and that's capital of country.

Interesting thread. Me personally I've 1CCd about, hmm, 2 shmups in my entire life, not a great record really, but I'm very much a multi-genre player, so many games, so little time to get really good at any of them. I think the only game I really got top class at was Outrun 2 back when it was on the Xbox one, since it was the only game I played for a few months.

The temptation to credit feed through a game is always there, just to see what's at the end, but I always come back to games like Metal Slug, Deathsmiles etc to play just for personal best. Kudos to all you who can 1CC Ikaruga etc but I have games from nearly a decade ago on my backlog that I still really want to play...

Reminds me of another conversation I had, someone claiming Radiant Silvergun was "crap" because it was too hard to 1CC, but I've always enjoyed that game just trying to do better than my previous performance, or try out new weapons on different bosses etc. I'll never 1CC it but I'll always come back to it.
