Re: Shmuppers who SUCK
Usually after the mid point in shmups I start credit feeding like an IGN reviewer. I was getting good at Armed Police Batrider, then rank kicks in to jack hammer me in the ass and my medals fall through my fingers.
Re: Shmuppers who SUCK
I feel I have ascended to a new level of suck, today.
I was excited to finally see the last(?) boss of Touhou: Imperishable Night on Easy mode. I'll 1CC this thing yet!

It bugs me when people who are much better than me deprecate themselves, even jokingly. "hur hur i can only reach disasterbachi in DFK i r noob"
(This is the same problem that prevents me from hanging around the Bemani fanbase for too long.)

Re: Shmuppers who SUCK
I generally suck, I think. But I'm also just trying to get better on my own and am not trying for any sort of score record recognition.
Now, I have a few I've made it to 3rd loop of MagMax (both arcade and NES version), made to the 3rd loop of Sky Shark (arcade, setting of Extra only 100,000 points), finished U.N. Squadron (arcade) but it was also on a machine set to Easy, looped Twin Cobra (Sega Genesis) but that was also on Easy A difficulty, finished/looped Outzone, finished ThunderForce III (Sega Genesis) on Normal, and finished M.U.S.H.A. (Sega Genesis) on Easy and Normal--but not yet on Hard.
Every other shump? Well, I get to a certain point on its default difficulty and sometimes the easiest difficulty. Examples include only getting to the 8th stage on 1942 (arcade and Capcom Classics Collection volume 1 PS2), only getting to 1-3 on Gradius V (PS2) on Very Easy with extras set on the easist setting every 200,000 and 300,000, and still never making it past stage 2 on Last Resort (SNK Arcade Classics volume 1). Platform shmups such as Ghosts and Goblins/Ghouls and Ghosts series or Metal Slug series, I am always using multiple credits to get anywhere far in the game.
I think the general like of the game also has a significant factor. I mean, I still can't finish Lightening Force (Sega Genesis) but I've reached as far as stage 10--since the game is difficult but is also well done in terms of control, I'll generally try again in a few days to see if I can finish it. Something like 1942, however, is so bland in its graphics and has an annoying soundtrack, so it may be months before I play it and try again to get further in the game. Then again, something like Gradius V is mixed, I very much like the overall gameplay despite the difficulty, but I don't like that in some of the most cramped areas of stage 2, it is so hard to see the small white cross shaped bullets with all the explosion animations going on that I literally do not see what hit me when I get hit. But, for something else like Silpheed: The Lost Planet--despite its impressive graphics I feel the gameplay drags on, so it sits on the shelf for months at a time before getting played again. Finally, despite Metal Slug's vry impressive graphics and sound (but music not so much), I find myself rarely playing every few days due to what it seems that the game was designed as a multi-credit game--and come to think of it, the same could be said for Smash TV and Total Carnage in terms of their multi-credit game design (despite a claim that Smash TV can be done in one credit).
That's just a few examples, and I've played many more shmups than just those, of course.
