Is USA region Wii shmup Ultimate Shooting Collection out?
I got this yesterday and am really enjoying Radio Allergy and Karous in it. I think it was worth it just for their good ports, but I'm dissapointed in the port of Chaos Field in this.
The Gamecube version is far superior. I'll try to lay out the differences between the two. The Gamecube version has zero slowdown. The only slowdown actually apparent in this version is when you use a lock-on attack, so I'm beginning to think that was the original intention. While this version does have crisper graphics and some effects that weren't in the Gamecube version, the Gamecube version strangely seems to cover more of my television, and the lack of some effects makes it easier to tell what's going on. The sound effects are far louder in this version, and tend to muffle out the music, so I guess I like the Gamecube version more because they're quite soft and you can enjoy the music more. And for some reason it seems hard difficulty mode doesn't work at all, or it's considerably easier than the Gamecube's hard mode. The Gamecube version doesn't retain the little demonstration from the arcade that shows you how to play every time you start up. However, it does have Original mode.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Got mine from Amazon today... And let me just say that the North American box art looks even more terrible in real life than it does on the internet.
Is it any wonder retailers don't want this piece of shit taking up valuable shelf real estate? Who decided this was a better idea than the Japanese box art?

You might recall of a certain USA PSX game title by the name of Silent Bomber that retained the same artwork and logos as that of it's original Japanese PSX counterpart of the same name -- all this courtesy of Bandai back in the day. ^_~
Some American game publishers feel the need to change the original Japanese game covers to better attract attention when placed on game retailers' shelves. Even XSGames' infamous USA PS2 release of Mobile Light Force 2 (aka Shikigami No Shiro) still can't topped today. ^_~
The USA front cover release of Raiden III looks mighty fine...in reference to the classic Raiden I and II games.

Hey, that Shiki - Mobile Light Force cover reminds me of a little side project I'm doing:

Nothing too impressive yet. Just getting revved up.
And yeah, the JP cover is slick-cool.

I think the US cover is better than the Japanese one's. It's more eye catching, and it tells you everything you need to know.
The game has guns, ships, and explosions. Truth in advertising.
But Radio Allergy Gamecube's was still the best.

Can anyone actually read the dialogue in Karous? It is ridiculously tiny.
Also, Radio Allergy stage 4: is it deliberate that the opening emails are the same as stage 1's, or is that an accident? (The stuff about the gym.)
And translated openings would've been nice.

Couple quesetions:
1. DO the difficulty settings work at all in the Ultimate Shooting Collection version of Chaos Field?
If YES, which gameplay elements exactly do they affect?
If NO, which gameplay elements WOULD they affect if they were working?
Also, if NO, which difficulty setting is it STUCK on? (Easy? Normal Hard?)
2. Do the difficulty settings for Ultimate Shooting Collection Radirgy and USC Karous work?
If YES (for either game), what exactly DO the difficulty settings affect in terms of gameplay?

Another big +1. Awesome project!ZOM wrote:+1
I hope you'll upload some hi-res versions sometime in the future.
Would love to get rid of some god-awful western covers & replace them.
And sorry to be off-topic again, but PC Engine Fan X - I remember having a Silent Bomber demo, and I think I used to like it. Would that make sense? Was it any good?
Back on topic, is there any news on a PAL Milestone collection yet? I can't buy yet another JPN current gen console...

Yes, Bandai did release such a PSX demo of Silent Bomber through the USA-based U.S. Official Playstation Magazine. Very sweet demo indeed. ^_~
In fact, the U.S. version of Silent Bomber has the same front game cover as that of the original Japanese version of the same name. How cool is that? (Most U.S. released PSX games had very different front covers compared to the original JPN versions of the same name but Silent Bomber was a special exception.) I managed to pick it used at my local Gamestop one day and it was complete with mint instruction manual. Paid a mere $15.00 USD for it...well worth the asking price for it. It does support the optional PSX Dual Shock controller for vibration functionality if that's your cup of tea. ^_~

Every game in this pack shares that trait. Kind of a downer as far as Karous is concerned.MathU wrote:The sound effects are far louder in this version, and tend to muffle out the music
The lack of proper vertical orientation+controls was a dealbreaker for some folks I know, hopefully now that they know there's a code, they'll give it a shot.
hahahaha...according to the main menu, all three games were developed in 2004.

Interesting find there, Skyline. So all three games were developed back in 2004? It's now 2009 and the USA, every once in a great while will get a console shmup port -- the last one was Castle of Shikigami 3 for the USA region Wii. It's the long wait in between releases that gets to some folks, so they go out & buy the import game title on day one...and no waiting or wondering if a USA release will come out if at all. ^_~

I don't think I have anything new to add here, but what the heck, I'll post anyways. I agree that Karous and Rajirugi are both fun (I prefer Rajirugi myself) and that Chaos Field is kind of meh, but getting all three on one disc for the cheap price is awesome.
Yes, the US box art is kind of cruddy, but I don't know if the minimalist JP box art would have done well here. The box art seems to be almost irrelevant since almost no actual retailers seem to have the game and most people have to order it online anyways.
If you can get your hands on one of the Hori Wii sticks, the games are more fun too, worth the effort to track one down.

Re: Is USA region Wii shmup Ultimate Shooting Collection out
How are the Wii ports of these games? Not sure whether to get this cheap collection or just get the Dreamcast version of Radirgy. Radirgy is really the only one in the collection I am interested in.

Totally fine ports.
