Compendium of Shmup Soundtracks

Post by Blackbird »

Update 7/12/2015: Fixed a ton of broken links, added OSTs to keep the list current.

For your listening pleasure. This is not an exhaustive list of every shmup ever made, but it's a good overview of many of the major series. Drop a comment if you find a missing soundtrack/want to add a shmup to the list. Enjoy!

Games are listed in alphabetical order. Some games are out of order so they can be grouped in series with other similar games (Nemesis is grouped with Gradius because of their overlap/shared lineage, for example). Ctrl+F is your friend. Please report any links that are broken so that I can fix them.

Very nice, too bad it will likely gain a lot of broken links as time passes, so maintenance work will be needed.
Something missing, the original Darius bgm, it's only on nico however http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm15207542

Great list. Let me suggest adding two of my favourite shmup OSTs ever. Certainly not the most influential games, but their soundtracks are amazing.

I feel I should mention Milestone's OSTs as notable soundtracks. I have a feeling that there's someone more qualified to vouch for them on that matter however.

Will re-rip tho. Also it is not a PCE game, it's PC-98.

I also noticed this lack of k.h.d.n./Milestone music. That said, there are so many differents shoot'em up music styles and composers that you can forget a few ones when trying to create such a list. ^^

Radirgy
Illvelo
Zanac Neo

Couldn't find playlists for Karous, Chaos Field nor Radirgy Noa tracks unfortunately.

I'm so glad to see that you have Ashura Blaster on the list. My second favorite shmup soundtrack ever! If you want, you can link to the full playlist I have on my channel.

Replying to comments:

Rest assured everyone, I haven't intentionally omitted any games/developers like Milestone. This is meant to be an unbiased list. I just kinda forgot that they existed since I haven't played any of their games personally =P. This is what I meant by "critical omissions", lol.

I've avoided sites like dropbox and nico video because you cannot listen to the music directly from the link; nicovideo requires you to register first, for example (unless I'm just doing it wrong).

Also what is "K.H.D.N."? Is that another alias for Milestone?

Ashura Blaster sounds great. Why wouldn't it be here? It's like the dark twin of Raiden.

Thanks to Herr Schatten for those OSTs... both games sound awesome. I'll probably have to check them out now.

k.h.d.n. is the art name for the duo of kou hayashi and daisuke nagata, the milestone composers.

they also did most of zanac neo. i need to make a good zanac neo upload for this thread.

Thanks for this update!

By the way, Illvelo was released on the Arcade and the Wii, but not the Dreamcast (even if it is a NAOMI game).

Added a bunch of shmups to the list. Doing this project has been pretty fun. It's got me listening to a lot of OSTs that I wouldn't have otherwise looked into. I'm especially enjoying a lot of the stuff around '91/'92 when CD technology was new and developers were really pushing to take advantage of the expanded sound capabilities. A lot of the PCE CD stuff is just awesome.

XII STAG / XIIZEAL
DELTAZEAL (aka sped-up-by-5% G-Stream G2020)

snksega did the videos for XII Stag, I just made the playlist. You can make playlists based off other folk's videos now, didn't realise until today. For those videos which don't have playlists Blackbird you could create them yourself, quite easy to do! :D

Hell yes!! I've been looking for this soundtrack for a long time, I love it!

I've got a couple suggestions you can add to the list.
1. Galmedes (I am 99% positive that no one has ever even heard of this shmup) It was released in 1992 by Visco, and the soundtrack was composed by Hidetoshi Fukumori. I'll try to get this uploaded to my Youtube channel hopefully very soon. The music is very similar to Ashura Blaster and Gun Frontier, with a bit of Raiden-esque melodies mixed in with that slightly dark melancholy feel.

2. Gun Frontier: Another game that had Hidetoshi Fukumori as the music composer. As stated above, it's very similar to Ashura Blaster and Galmedes. It's also one of the most melancholy shmup soundtracks I've heard. If you don't find any good quality recordings of it on Youtube, I'll be more than happy to upload it in good quality.

3. U.N. Defense Force: Earth Joker: Yet another game whose music was done by Fukumori. The game itself is not very good, but the soundtrack is better. Its music is good, similar to the games I listed right above, but it can get repetitive because most of the stage themes are variations on the same melody. I can upload it if needed as well.

I must really be on a Hidetoshi Fukumori fix lately, I find that the music composed by him to have that slightly dark edge I crave, and just like Blackbird said that Ashura Blaster is like Raiden's dark twin, I find all of these games to have a darker Raiden-style feel to the music.

Oh and by the way, since you're missing the Fire Barrel soundtrack, I could get that uploaded as well. :P

Slow on the updates the last days. Recovering from St. Pattie's celebrations >_>...

I went ahead and added all the Triangle Service stuff I could find. TRIZEAL and EXZEAL need full OSTs though.

@Emo Fox: Dang man, you dug up some seriously obscure stuff there. UN Defense Joker is a Visco game and it isn't even listed on the Visco wikipedia page for crying out loud >_<. The Gun Frontier soundtrack on youtube seems to have a lot of distortion/noise in the background. I don't know if this is a characteristic of the original OST or if the upload is just poor quality. Since you suggested all this stuff, perhaps you could help me out and upload some of these soundtracks in glorious high definition ;)?

Gotta thank you for that. I spent like 4 hours last night dremeling a CPS2 B-board to hell while listening to that on loop 8)

The Gun Frontier OST on youtube is in poor quality; I have the original soundtrack, and it does not sound like that at all. I'll be more than happy to upload it. It includes a couple of nice arranged tracks, one of which I already uploaded to my channel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epyXWqexoOE I also have the Metal Black soundtrack, but I see that a link has already been posted, however I could upload an arranged track that's probably not on that list. I'll try to have these uploaded within this week, starting with Fire Barrel and Gun Frontier, since Galmedes and Earth Joker require me to record the tracks directly from the game ROMs first. Fire Barrel will probably be up by today.

Nothing like Ashura Blaster to get you through your tasks, huh?

I'll try to have these up soon, don't worry!

Also, have any of you played Lightning Fighter on iOS, made by Taiwanese Uwan Studio? The soundtrack is amazing, plenty of heavy guitars throughout. I'll try to have it up as well, but I'm missing the last 5 tracks unfortunately. :|

XII Stag was missing its Game Over tune as well. I can upload that and attaech it to the playlist for it but considering it's a 5 second piece not sure if anyone cares.

I'm also thinking of uploading G-Stream's soundtrack with speed adjustments to sound like the PCB while still being hi-def like the port, as well as the unused tracks and remixes featured on the OST CD.

Thanks, I'll check it out on the ffs forums.

Also, here is the Fire Barrel soundtrack as promised, Blackbird. Go ahead and add the playlist to the list. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... IVdS3rZWcn

Also, be on the lookout tomorrow for Gun Frontier's soundtrack, I will try to have it uploaded before the day is through.

One final word, you forgot to add Alltynex Second's soundtrack, part of the Siter Skain trilogy, as well as the original FM towns Alltynex. If you can't find good quality versions of both, I have both and I would gladly put those on my to-do list to upload soon.

Updated. Keep me posted on any other uploads you make. I'll probably make a section for arranged, remixed, and other "unofficial" shmup soundtracks after the main list is nearing completion. For now I'll stick to original soundtracks just to avoid confusion.

Updated. I've been listening to the eXceed series recently and I would highly recommend it, especially eXceed 3rd. My initial reaction was something like "Damn, this is some grade-A face melting SSH-level guitar wankery!" Then I went to the developer's website and saw that SSH had indeed composed the soundtrack for the third game. Sometimes I've just got it ;).

Alltynex Second has a great soundtrack too. It pleasantly reminds me of the Saturn era Technosoft games.

Has anyone got Detana!! TwinBee? It's conspicuously missing.
