What's the easiest way to get PS1 imports on PS2 slim

Post by MrOldSchoolCool »

I have a US ps2 slim that I have modded to play ps2 imports via swap magic. I used the method where you block the sensors to get it to be able to do this.

However, I'm having a hell of a time figuring out what I can do to get ps1 imports running on it.

FYI, my ps2 slim is one of the newer ones that has a glossy finish for half of one side.

Can anybody help me out?

Modchip is the easiest way to play everything on a Playstation 2. However, installing it might get a little tricky. I use a matrix infinity modchip on my PAL ps2 slim. works great.

Or buy a japanese PS2...

It seems like there is a way to do it with Free McBoot, which you can install since you already have the clips installed for your Swap Magic. I have not tried it myself so you will have to search some more.

Doesn't swap magic come with 2 boot discs? One DVD and one CD?

I always assumed the CD boot disc was for CD based PS2 games and PS1 games.

Never tried it tho.

I always had problems with swap magic. It wouldn't boot Gradius V no matter what I did even though it was supposedly supported. It (Gradius V) is a CD-ROM ps2 game and I don't know if the problem has something to with the format.

I had the same problem with Psyvariar and then realized it's a CD game, used the CD boot disc and it worked just fine.

Disc swapping is a pain tho, that's why I bought a japanese PS2.

The CD format swap disc is for CD based PS2 games (discs with a blue backside) but it does not work for PS1 games unfortunately, as it boots up the PS2s start-up instead of the PS1's.

How does Free McBoot work and what would it allow me to do?

You need to install it to a memory card using action replay, or you can get someone who already has a free mcboot memory card to copy it onto another memory card(I think). you can do lots with it, media player, usb advance loader(a bit crap but ok for some stuff) hd loader which is great if you have a phat and a network card. esr is the main benefit, it loads copied games as if they were regular DVDs. It has slower load times but pretty much everything works. You can also use a burned region switching disc to get foreign games to display full screen.

I just use a slim ps2 with the sensors blocked and switch a real ps1 game with a copy at the right time. Not ideal but I think it's the best way. My slim won't play ps2 games but runs ps1 backups perfectly which means I'm not too fussed whether I'm damaging it or not. You can get the swap down pretty good so as to minimise any stress on the motor.

Also if you do want to install free mcboot pretty much every resource on the web will tell you that you need a specific hard to find expensive version of action replay. However there is its a very little known method that can be done with a newer action replay max. Its has a thick shiny silver box and a dongle in it. I was able to buy it from amazon for 15 or 20 quid(about 3 years ago or so, so probably still quite easily obtainable). Not sure if ya can still buy it from a store, but I have it if you need someone to set up a memory card.

Hope that is of some help to you

If you want to try free mc boot I can do it for you. I've never installed it before but I do have a memory card that has free mc boot on it. If you do deside to go through with it, make sure the memory card is an official sony ps2 memory card and that it is empty. Also do you live in the United States? Then again, even if you're international a little memory card shouldn't cost too much to ship. Let me know. I won't charge for anything, just pay for shipping.

That's very kind of you. So how does free mcboot work in relation to playing imports though? I was a little confused by the prior post. Do you still have to swap a disc while it's spinning? I'm not interested in any of the other stuff that free mcboot does.

What would I need to do to get an import to play once I have the memory card you would send? BTW, am still considering whether I want it but that is very nice of you to offer.

You can play any ps2 import with esr. Ps1 is disc swap only

Edit: yeah you don't have to swap at all with esr. You just have to patch the iso before you burn it and your good to go :) it's pretty simple to do, however with cd based games you need to add a dummy file which increases the size of the iso so it burns as a DVD instead of a cd. You can play all the shooters like this.
And there's a thread here somewhere which explains how to patch some of the isos to increase the resolution. (Works great with mushihimesama and gradiusV to name a few.

MrOldSchoolCool, since you already have Swap Magic discs and the magic clips or whatever they are called, you can install Free McBoot yourself.

Link, installation method 3.

It's the method I used for mine.

If you're trying to play Gradius Gaiden, keep in mind that one level plays way too fast on PS2's. One option you should leave open is just buying a japenese PS1. They're dirt cheap, I bought one for 30 shipped.

Did the PS2 use hardware or emulation to play PS1 games? Maybe buying a "One Chip" modded PSOne will give you the better playing experience, they are tiny consoles too like the ps2 slim.

Not a problem. Someone posted that you had a swap magic for your ps2. In that case you can install free mc boot yourself. Here's a link:

Though if that's too complex I can still do it for you. Apparently you can use esr to play burned ps2 imports patched but I'm not finding anything on import ps1 games. I have to do more googling but I should come up with something. Also there is a psio project that will plan to load ps1 games off of sd card using the parallel port on the original playstation. You can also check that project out for ps1 games. I'm keeping an eye on it since ps1 games can't be played off of the hdd on ps2. Let me know if you need more information. Also my apologies for not replying earlier.

No problem dude. I think I'm going to look into a Japanese PSone like the one guy said.

Where should I get one from? On eBay they're like 100+ bucks or untested if cheaper.

Take a look at this model list of playstations:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStatio ... _of_models

I did a quick look on ebay for scph-3500. Found one for 35 dollars. Check which ever model you want. Damn you're right though, the scph-100 is pretty expensive. I found a few for 30 to 50 dollars though I can't judge on their function. The other models appear to be cheaper. I have a scph-101, ntsc u model. It works great, tiny too. Only downside is the lack of a parallel port.

I bought from this seller, he has tons in his store.

It doesn't matter that they're untested. If the laser isn't good, all you need to do is swap one from a working US playstation, very easy. US playstations can be had for $5 to $10 on craigslist and ebay. The JP PS1 I got actually had a perfectly operational laser, so no swap needed. Shipping took about 3 weeks though, but I wasn't in a hurry, and it was free.
