Definitely the best movie I've seen this year so far, although the list of movies I've seen is admittedly small.
I preferred Mr Peabody & Sherman. The Lego Movie goes off like its taken an overdose of Speed. Wore me out. The message in the Lego Movie isn't bad, about a worker piece who's never had an independent thought in his life, hooked on trash reality TV and Boy/Girl manufactured band pop music. "Everything is Awesome!"
There's a lot more in there, but of course I won't bother going into it.
Mr Peabody & Sherman was much more relaxing and entertaining for me.

Monuments Men:

Not bad, not great. Really excellent subject matter helps it along but it's pretty flabby and you only really get a sense of where it's going about half way through. I suppose it could be argued that as the protagonists are searching for something and not finding it, you're a bit lost the same as they are. Solid performances from what should be a great cast but Cate Blanchett shows up the boys. Clooney needs to work on his story telling a bit and tighten it up. Other than that, yeah it's fine. 3/5

I haven't seen it yet, but Monuments Men just sounds like gratuitous Oscar bait. Not that I expect it to win (or even be nominated for) any, but the whole plot just sounds like someone was trying to check off all the boxes to win awards, but failed to make it good enough to actually do so.

Yeah, the trailer told a similar story. I should know because Youtube made me watch it a fucktillion times. John Goodman & Bill Murray (as much as I love them) don't belong in a WWII movie. Full stop.

George Clooney can acquit himself well in nearly any film, so long as he isn't writing or directing it.

Yeah Bill Murray is my favorite comedy actor but he's wasted in this, gets to crack two or three jokes and that's about it.

Finally watched the 3D Blu-Ray version of Gravity...interesting to learn that it garned a grand total of seven Oscars including best director, sound editing, sound mixing, etc. Even though actress Sandra Bullock was nominated for best actress in a major film catagory with the Gravity film, she didn't win but actress Cate Blanchett won instead.

Not to mention that most of the CG EFX were handled by 3rd-party CG EFX company, Framestore, using Maya software. Some frames took anywhere from 10 to 15 hours to render or even more time all in stunning photo-realistic detail. The computational power was rated at 500TB just to do the CG rendering alone. It's been said that it was a four and half year endeavor to make Gravity from initial conception to reality. The bonus short film that accompanies the standard Blu-ray disc portion of Gravity is a nice touch (although if it was included in the theatrical version, it certainly would've added more run time to the current time duration that it has now).

I thought Gravity was altogether pretty entertaining, although it's the rare movie I wished I'd seen in the theater instead.

Yes, I had the golden opportunity to watch the 3D version of Gravity on a DFX screen setup (comparable to an Imax screen) with an impressive 18,000 watt surround sound system in place...priceless. Of course, watching it on a smaller 3D LED TV setup really can't compare to watching on the larger-than-life Imax-spec movie screen setting as originally intended but it's better than nothing.

ROBOCOCK / TEH REBOOTS

Image

^ What you don't like about this picture is the same thing you won't like about this film.

I saw it. It was raining, I was bored, and Chinese movies are cheap. £4.50 for a 3D showing with free large popcorn and coke, that's like, a £12 discount versus the UK.

For the first 40 minutes I shamefully admit to being pleasantly surprised. The opening middle eastern warzone sequence was well done, the moral upshot of machines not being able to feel set with a fine point.

The director actually did some things quite well. He took his time with shots instead of shred cutting, and certain elements of Murphy's transformation came with a reasonable weight. He also used the original Robocop theme and had several throwbacks to the source, including a capitalist (semi) dystopia parodied through Samuel L. Jackson's Fox Newesque propaganda talk show.

Problem is, it all starts to unravel slowly but surely around half way.

I liked that the main actor wasn't an A-lister, but he was also a bit average in performance terms. His partner, Lewis, now transformed from cute pudgy white chick to black undercover cop, was atrocious - although in terms of badness it was hard to differentiate between him and Murphy's wife, who may or may not have spent an entire day in a school for performing arts.

Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton were superb choices: the two of whom did a great good job of expanding the Omnicorp role in a positive and interesting way. Unfortunately most of every supporting character is paper thin. The crooked cops and the primary villain had all of 30 seconds to flesh out their non-existent personalities, same as most of everyone else in a secondary role. You couldn't really care less who's being shot and who's being tased (yes, tased.)

Despite being happy to hear the original Robocop theme, the rest of the music score was terrible. Under par and misplaced. The action sequences were mostly rubbish and uninspired. The best is the one where he tackles two ED-209's, and it lasts about two minutes.

There are hardly any decent one-liners. Seems to be an art lost to the 80's. Robocop wasn't really Robocop very often. He spent all of maybe nine minutes chasing and taking out bad guys, the rest was training and family time. As if that wasn't bad enough, this film has Spiderman 3 syndrome, revealing Murphy's not so pretty face with every given opportunity. He looks vaguely badass with the visor down, but no, let's just flip it up/break it and make him look kind of stupid instead.

The ending is very weak, very perfunctory - it totally runs out of steam and direction in its last third, by which point the unravelling is complete.

Toward the end I was thinking I could score it a 6 at a squeeze, but by the credits it was a comfortable 5.

Not the worst no-brainer or even the worst reboot I've ever scene. It's watchable. But it has the same problematic Hollywood production template that keeps tripping movies up these days: no soul, no thought, no believability, and not much care whether you notice or not.

My girlfriend wanted to see "The Monuments Men" tonight, and I kind of wanted to see it, too, but was a little dissuaded by what I read about it here.

I liked it just fine. It didn't change my life at all, and I don't see why the thing would necessarily have generated "major Oscar buzz", but it was quite fine for what it was. Pretty entertaining with a good sense of humor, I liked it, and so did she.

Again: nothing that'll change your life at all, but for certain it won't have you walking out demanding your money back or anything. It's a good story, told pretty well, by some pretty good actors. I wouldn't mind seeing a longer, less edited director's cut.

Does the new Robocop have a "bitches, leave" moment in it? If not I refuse to pay to watch it.

300: Rise of an Empire - 4/5

Pretty good film. Not quite as good as the all-time classic 300 (which I saw 4 times at the cinema), but still extremely entertaining nonetheless - if a little disjointed in terms of plot and pacing. Eva Green played a pretty good villain, although the main actor wasn't as good as Gerard/Leonidis. I was expecting the film to disappoint, given the production problems, but walked out pleasantly surprised. It certainly did live up to my expectations. Looking forward to the "sequel" (if there is one).

One of the few (maybe only 2?) court movies to accurately follow the rules of evidence.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

So it follows legal/courtroom stuff fairly well does it? I'm not familiar with the 'rules of evidence' (is that some proper legalese ?), but I'm confident it's a bloody brilliant film!

Pretty much every episode of "Law and Order" should end with Jack McCoy being lead out of the courtroom by a bailiff in cuffs for contempt of court.

I saw it in the theater, and was quite entertained to say the least. I really enjoy movies that capture the feeling of encapsulation, and I think that one might have topped the others in that respect. Also the only movie I actually liked Sandra Bullock in, so it had that going for it.

in other news, Wolf of Wall Street just came out here. I figured I'd see it and it would be worth watching, but can say that it was much better than I had anticipated, and Leo did better than I would have figured as well. It's coke and hookers the whole way through, so if that kind of thing offends you, you'll hate it. But, I don't mind gratuitous sex with a comedic touch, and there was definitely some funny ass shit in there. Jonah Hill's teeth were brilliant. The surprise performance was Shane from The Walking Dead. I'll take him way more seriously from now on.

Grabbed Canton Godfather and Crime Story, so I have Fortune Star’s as of right now complete catalog of Jackie Chan on Blu-ray (which is something like 20-ish films. Yes I’m also counting all the Sammo Hung ones).
Have heard many a story of how poor several of the transfers look (in particular Armour of God) so hopefully they’re not too offensive.
Anyway going to marathon what I have and I’ll be starting with Fearless Hyena. Even though I've seen most of them before it will be interesting to see how well they hold up when viewed sequentially.

Ehhhh, they don't really look "horrible," they mainly look exactly the same as the Fortune Star DVDs did. I'll still just pick up the DVD if I get a chance because of this. Much cheaper for basically the same quality. Shout! Factory's R1 BDs look much better, although there are only about three or so at the moment.

One down. I'll write impressions if any one's interested.

Starting with Fearless Hyena, Chan’s directorial debut feels fairly run of the mil “seek revenge for my master” period kung-fu stuff.
Narrative, sets, costumes (with some of the most obvious adhesive held facial hair this side of a Shaw brothers film) are all nothing to get terribly excited about.
Where Fearless Hyena differentiates itself from most that came before it, seem to be its incredibly intricate choreographed combat and training sequences that Chan would become synonymous for.

The open hand and weapon based action scenes are masterfully done, with few cut-aways making the feats all the more impressive. In particular the gauntlet of challengers Chan’s character faces within the martial arts school just lead to one great fight after another.
It’s also here where Chan really starts to exhibit his own brand of slapstick comedy into the flick, which includes a brief skit with Dean Shek involving Chan seeking employment as a coffin salesman with humorous results.

Close to the midpoint of the film after a certain event transpires (chan's master/grandfather is murdered), most of the light-hearted playfulness stalls and makes way for some intense training montages (complete with buckets of sweat and slow-mo effect), followed by the penultimate battle with three robed spear brandishing underlings (possibly the most satisfying part of the movie) and the final fight with the films clichéd yet fearsome white haired antagonist.
Here Chan must forgo his usual kung-fu style in favor of something that sort of resembles the five stages of grief taught to him by his new mentor, known as “emotional kung-fu”. In layman terms, it means a long & drawn out one on one fight against his master’s killer while Chan repeatedly makes stupid high pitched noises before eventually triumphing.

The film is a little rough, emotive scenes are cringe worthy and aside from the martial arts prowess on display and the odd bit of hit or miss comedy it doesn’t have a lot going for it. Honestly though as long as the action is good (and it is good) then I'm relatively happy.
So good stuff in my book

I’ll be watching the Young Master next.

Watching these film in HD (or at least with higher bit rates) doesn't do them any favors either :D
Actually in Fearless Hyena James Tien was easy to spot as Chan’s grandfather. Hilarious considering I can’t imagine him being much older than Chan. Just stick on a little make-up, facial hair, wig and cough a lot and you’re good to go I guess. Truly simpler times.

Centurion: watched this for the second time over the weekend. Easily my favorite movie starring Officer Jimmy Mcnulty as a Roman General (or something). Also has Michael Fassbender and Davos from Game of Thrones. Didn’t even mind the awkwardly tossed-in romantic interest about two thirds of the way through the movie. This is fun fantasy and never quite as dark as it tries to be. I highly suggest this to movie to anyone with Netflix Streaming, it does just enough…

Dallas Buyer’s Club: look how skinny Matthew McConaughey is! Watch how hard Jared Leto’s trying! It’s not a terrible movie, there are things happening and MM has a great mustache and there are eighties hookers with mullets. What I’m saying is, I’ve certainly seen worse. But my girlfriend fell asleep about 20 minutes in & I was definitely sorta jealous I wasn’t tired enough to do the same.
