You could try my mapping the next time you play and see if you get the bug. Maybe it's only on this button combination?

Why am I not surprised? Had any of the NG:DEV guys actually played any recently released shmup?
And I don't think there is any valid excuse not to have rotations to both sides. I highly doubt that rotating right is any harder than rotating left.

I'll do that later today.

Most TVs rotate both ways anyway. :) Of course, though, you're right. It seems daft that they included only a single rotation option. Could a dev with experience tell us... is rotating both ways really tricky to implement?

The thing is, I do not have a TV, I have a PC monitor with a VESA stand, which swivels only right. I can take it out of the stand and prop it up against it, and I have done so in the past for Ikaruga for example. It works, but it is a pain in the ass.

I think the left rotation being a sorta standard on older systems is simply due to the fact that cab monitors seem to always rotate left. The first game I played which had both left and right was the latter Cave ports on the PS2. If it is doable on the PS2 I am sure it is doable on the DC. I would be VERY surprised if once you got the code for rotating left, the added effort to rotate right as well would be huge.

Also, from what I gather there is nothing like a training mode or anything like that, neither on the DC nor the NG version, right? That I can not imagine would be hard either. Set some spawn points in front of bosses, have some settings for rank and so on. How long would that take to implement? But from all the things I have seen, there does not seem to be a lot attention to detail and things like that from NG:DEV/Hucast.

Nope..just to the left.
really ? meaning that it would scroll to the left on a horizonal screen ? This would be the opposite direction of the MVS version, wouldn't it ?

No, on an unrotated monitor it would scroll to the right, then you rotate the screen counterclockwise and you are fine.

Got this today. Nice game, far better than earlier efforts from them.

I'm playing VGA/TATE with Asciiware PS1 stick + EMS adapter. Works great with no issues saving.

Finally got this yesterday,I notice that sometimes, when there's too much happening on screen like a mid boss and other stuff exploding at the same time that it chugs a bit...this happens a lot from stage 2 onwards. It's the DC version.Has anyone else noticed this?

Good old fashioned slowdown. I'm not sure they implemented it intentionally, but in such a frantic game, when it happens to me I consider it a godsend!

It's not so much slow down,it's like the screen kind of stutters/jumps just for a second...it dosn't ruin it or anything, just wondered if anyone had noticed something similar. It is a really cool game though, treated myself to the CE!

Yeah, it's probably loading the boss data. A lot of old PC Engine games do that too, and so does some of NG:Dev's other efforts. It's a bit annoying; it seems like they should be able to get rid of it. Other than that, holy crap this game is cool! It looks beautiful in tate mode.

Just to clarify,I don't mean the slight pause before the end of level bosses, that was already mentioned elsewhere.I meant at really busy points with multiple explosions.

MVS reprint out on the 17th of March. There may be a few copies available on the NG:Dev.Team shop as well. All of the reprint carts have the option of a wooden shell.

Hit a major bug while credit feeding to see the later parts of the game. Game locked up multiple times on the stage 4 and 5 boss when bombing - seemed to only occur when I was either moving, firing or both at the time of pressing the bomb button. Bombed loads when making a conscious effort not to hit any other inputs and it never froze up. Too much going on? Disk sounded like it was spinning up fractions of a second before the lock up.

Disappointing to run into something like this to say the least.

The very first time I put the disc in my JP Dreamcast, half way through the first level on my very first play with the game, the disc started making all sorts of really loud, unhealthy grind(storm)ing noises. Luckily, I've put in about two hours more on the game by now and never encountered this again. Seems it was just a weird one-off glitch.

Otherwise, very much enjoying it! A fun game for sure and certainly one of the more authentically Japanese feeling Western games out there. (It almost gets it!) Lovely and retro and all heart warmingly gooey and Toaplany. Also somehow reminds me just a tiny bit of some of the Amiga shmups, but perhaps it's just the colour palette?

I also do wish it had a training mode though - or a proper multi-level difficulty select like a lot of other NeoGeo games do. It's only available difficulty is set pretty darn high for me. I'm an old man and my reflexes aren't what they used to be. I'll have to see how well I progress with more practice.

So the locking issue looks like a vertical.s mode problem. Tried with the regular vertical mode and used the zoom function of my TV to make the play area larger, no problems. Will have to play a few more credits like that tomorrow. Controls seemed tighter too.

Looks like vertical.s mode is ballsed.

Got my DC copy in the mail and played a couple hours on it. To me the tate mode stick seemed overly sensitive and the ship moved a little fast as well as the swarms of bullets. Found myself tapping the slow button to control the ship better. I like the art and music and all the classic shmupness to it. Looking forward to a strategy review and some boss kill help, like level 2.

A response from the developer would be great...

Got it today. First impressions are: botched port.
Still a lot of testing to do before I toss this in a volcano.

It's starting to sound like the issues/glitches are coming up for the people using custom setups (controller adapters, padhacks for cabs, etc).

I've been playing a solid hour via s-video w/stock DC pads and none of the disk errors are happening. I think I nede to do some further testing before i make a conclusion.. I really hope I can get this running smoothly in my cab.

Haven't had any issues since I stopped using vertical.s, fairly sure that's where the problem lies.

I have also remedied the issues I was having. Seems this game isn't so friendly with a jamma padhack interface, understandable as it isn't how the game would normally be played. I managed a work-around and it's finally glitch/crash free (in arcade Tate mode).

Not much lag either, even in VGA.

Hopefully my earlier complaints haven't steered too many people away, it is quite a fun game and should work fine on a standard Tate setup. If you are going with oddball joystick adapters or jamma padhacks, you might want to be weary though.

I was thinking the exact same thing during most of the last episode of Shmups Weekly. (The Commando logo on the game's title screen is off-center by one tile column.)
