Beaches on the East Coast

Post by CKR »

I live in Indiana. I'm going to take my wife and daughter to to the ocean. So, i decided on the east coast because it is closest. I was thinking about Myrtle Beach? Any other suggestions?

I have been there and it is nice. There is a lot to do where you have miniature golf courses and gokarts aplenty. The crowd there is a lot of families with kids and teens. The beach can be somewhat crowded depending when you go because there are a lot of high rise hotels. There are palm trees which is cool! It reminded me of a much larger and slightly upscale version of Ocean City MD, but they have the awesome boardwalk in OC with more bars and a spring break vibe depending when you go.

Not sure what you want out of a trip like this but my personal favorite is North Carolina's Outer Banks. Less developed but still has stuff to do if you want all that stuff. Less crowded (and cleaner) beaches as you have mainly beach houses and some condos with little to no hotels. If want something where you can spend hours of laid back beach time where the point is to unwind and unplug without having always being doing stuff, then I would give this a shot. Bigger waves where you can surf or do SUP - stand up paddle boarding. More families with smaller kids. Some people might be bored here, but as mentioned it all depends what you want. OC does not let you drink on the beach but Outer Banks does and I think Myrtle does too as I remember.

The only East Coast beach I've spent any amount of time at is Fort Lauderdale Beach. It's a pretty nice one and has warm water, but it's quite some distance away from where you are, and tends to draw a Spring Break type crowd, which probably isn't a good thing for a lot of people. It's also a long way from Indiana (most of the time when I'm in Fort Lauderdale, it's to catch a cruise ship.)

The coast along North/South Carolina has very nice beaches, but I would caution you before going to Myrtle Beach. I guess it really depends on what kind of vacation/experience you are looking for. Myrtle Beach, being the most popular beach destination, is essentially a tourist trap - there's lots of kitschy touristy type stuff there like miniature golf, theme restaurants, those dollar beach stores, etc.. There are lots of things to do and fun places to go, but the beaches are going to be very crowded and chock full of yuppies. If you would prefer a more relaxed "get away from it all" kind of vacation where you have more of the beach to yourself, I recommend going to some of the more rural towns further north or south of Myrtle.

The area around Shalotte/Long Island is very rustic and a bit more quiet. The area between Murrell's Inlet and Pawley's Island is also a lot quieter and more rustic. All of these areas are within an hour's drive of Myrtle if you want to see the local attractions, but they'll be a lot less crowded. I went to Pawley's Island last year and it was fantastic - we rented a house on the island with a couple other friends and their families and shared cooking duties, so we had a home cooked meal every night and lots of good company. The beaches were clean and we almost had the beach to ourselves.
