Crazy Wings : Hybrid Shoot 'em Up

Post by manish.spangle »

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a hybrid Shoot 'em Up. This game will be released on various platforms like iOS, Xbox, PS, PC, Mac, Linux, Android and Windows.

About the game:

It is a hybrid shoot 'em up which means that you get to play the game as a Side Scrolling Shmup as well as a top down vertical scroller Shmup. We have tried to maintain a cartoonish/colourful theme for the game. If you have enjoyed the classic R-Type or Gradius, or the more recent ones like Sine Mora you are surely gonna love it. We have not decide of a name yet. We are calling it 'Crazy Wings' for now but that might change. If you've got suggestions for names, please let me know.

We are currently working on the iOS release. We hope to finish the game by the end of April.

We don't have trailer yet but i am posting a few images which will give you an idea of what the game is gonna be like. :)

Hope you guys like it. Any feedback is appreciated.

I think you forgot to include those images?
I like the concept/promo art, though.

Two of them I love (for different reasons as well) and one of them I hate.

(sorry, but I think I'm having one of those days...)

I guess you didn't like Sine Mora then. Lots of people who don't like it, many who do. :D

These are all the images, i can share now. I have a few other as well but they are not quite polished yet, and i don't want anyone to get a wrong picture of the game. :)

Glad you like the concept art. I will post updates as soon as i have something good to show.

Thanks!

So what will the gameplay be like? Can we have any details on that?

And is this your studio? www.magicspangle.com/

It's funny, I remember the creator of Tyrian talking about making a sequel with the same concept, but he never followed through with it. It'll be interesting to see what you do with it.

I don't want to seem mean, but I gotta say, the graphics look good but I'm more interested if the gameplay is thoroughly thought out. Citing Sine Mora as an example of what to expect is frankly quite worrying with the issues present in that game.

Alas, this is the point of Development - not so much promotion, but to be sure you get it right before release, or at least right enough to know when to safely deviate from the norm without completely alienating your audience. I'm looking forward to hearing what the gameplay is all about.

Thank you for showing your interest guys.

Regarding the gameplay, quite frankly, it can change over the course of development. It is very flexible now. Right now, I have planned of making one stage consisting of two levels, one of which will be a side scroller and the other one a vertical scroller. I will use this for testing and getting feedback.

Right now, we have 5 planes/ships the player can own. Each plane has its own strength and weaknesses. Like for example, in certain levels you are required that you use a particular ship to complete that level. Of course, you could use other ships but using the specialised ship for the level would make things much easier.

All the ships, have three different weapons. A primary weapon which has sort of unlimited ammo, a secondary weapon which can be fired limited times(8-10) and a final weapon which can be fired only once. This is something we thought of while we were modelling our planes. But if we find anything breaking the gameplay, it will change.

There are several kinds of enemies as well. Each distinct with certain characteristics.

Because, the first release is for iOS, the player will fire in one direction only. You can not change the direction of your firing. Depending on how this works out, it can change for other platforms.

IMO, in a shmup there are basically two things :
1) Shoot enemies
2) Dodge Obstacles/enemies

As i write this, we are working on designing obstacles. We are experimenting with different shapes and design, to see how the player would react to dodge it. In most cases, we are trying to restrict the movement of player so that he has to dodge and stay safe and also kill enemies at the same time.

Like most people, i enjoy epic boss fights. So you should certainly expect mind-blowing boss fights.

There are certain unique elements but i would like to keep it under the wraps at the moment.

Like i mentioned before, we are very flexible atm and open to changes. When the game was initially thought of, it was supposed to be a 2D game but later during development we noticed we wanted to do certain things that could not be done in 2D. Hence, we switched to 3D.

I'm open to any kind of feedback. I know this is perhaps the best place to be when developing a shmup. If you have any ideas you'd like to see in this game, i would surely want to hear about it. If you would like to play test when we have something, that would be awesome.

Thanks!
