Little things that annoy the hell out of you

Pfft, their internet downloads of music are probably very slightly inferior in sound quality to analog CDs anyway.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Like how audiophiles are with their music sources, in the way vinyl is supposedly superior to all that comes after it, compression of the music, etc. Though to be fair, things like compression are probably more well known avoidances.jonny5 wrote:Please explain this statement, particularly the analog part.BitFaced wrote:Pfft, their internet downloads of music are probably very slightly inferior in sound quality to analog CDs anyway.

All you have to do is get rid of the bit-encoding scheme and use a variable power laser, right? Piece o'cake.

Supporting the people who made something you're enjoying? Now why would you ever want to do that? Granted, I emulate a bunch and I do download some games before I buy them to see if the full version actually works on my machine, but it's nice to support the devs so they can make more cool shit to play. And so they can eat and pay rent.moh wrote:When I tell people I don't pirate things, they give me this look like "you do know its free, right?".
There's at least one game out there that gives you a soundtrack download link if you beat the game and get a secret item in the game (but it's a free music video/game made by the bandmate's brother and it's an indie band so it's obviously meant for publicity).

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I can easily slip into the mindset of "the Internet is a public space, therefore releasing a product digitally is equivalent to busking." However, even with that metaphorical rationalization, not being dirt poor, I have no excuse not to drop something into the tip jar. Unthinkably rude to stand around a busker, enjoying their performance, and then walk away without tipping once you've had your fill.
The old standby of "I wouldn't have bought it anyway, so they're not losing anything by my gain" still works, but only when it's actually true. No point in trying to deceive myself, though I'm sure some people posses that talent. And, as I get older, the reflexive rejoinder of "then why not just go without?" is harder for me to dance around.
I'm not sure if people even bother with justifications anymore though. Just, "if I can steal without personal risk, I do." Not just unscrupulous, but chickenshit. I'd have a lot more respect (not to mention trust) for a genuine thief who also pirates, than someone who only does the latter. Granted, they're not one to one comparisons, but pirating is only a moral grey area if you've never bothered thinking about it.

I had to look up busking - look, even in that instance, those people are doing the public a service. Only jackasses hate street performers. London would have been significantly less fun if they swept them all up.
So you get Scrooge saying "I pay my taxes..." - well, there are also things you don't pay taxes for which you like and should want to support, too.
Unfortunately a lot of this is probably the poisonous fruit of the MPAA and RIAA, but hopefully we can move past that era.

One of my favourite examples of this is the 3DS flashcart company: Gateway. So the R4 guys apparently stole the Gateway code and used it in their own flashcart. Gateway caught onto this and inserted some code that will brick your 3DS if its running on a non-Gateway flashcart.
So Gateway is pissed off that someone stole their code, and is making money off of it? The irony is hilarious.

The fact that every time I google "shmups" to access the forum on a computer not my own, I get Pete Dorr's goofy face and one of his worthless videos about the subject.

Annoying thing: when you get into work, feeling ready to take on anything, and then everyone keeps on asking 'are you feeling alright? You have really dark circles today. Are you getting sick?' I have allergies, goddamnit. It is what it is. But by the end of the day I feel like I've had the shit kicked out of me, just on account of the constant well-meaning, but misplaced concern.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I've always thought that stealing isn't exactly the proper term. In my eyes, its stealing when the owner no longer possesses what you took. In the instance of digital piracy, "duplication" seems to be more accurate, since they still are in possession of what you took. Now I'm not trying to justify it or anything, I'm just saying that it annoys me when people use the two terms synonymously.

If somebody is trying to sell music, and you download it without paying for it, that's stealing. Digital distribution or otherwise.Lord Satori wrote:I've always thought that stealing isn't exactly the proper term. In my eyes, its stealing when the owner no longer possesses what you took. Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
The only time i think you should download music is when you dont really have the money to pay for it (meaning you are poor, really poor), but you download it because you actually love the stuff, and you introduce it to your friends and colleagues. Since you cant pay for it, you do free passionate marketting for it. But only if you cant really afford it. Not like "have no money to go to macdonalds" but more like "not sure if i can pay the rent next month"jonny5 wrote:If somebody is trying to sell music, and you download it without paying for it, that's stealing. I read a story somewhere a few years back, a dev found his game on piratebay, commented that even though its being pirated, its good that more people are playing it. someone replied back to him saying that he really liked the game, but there was no way he could pay for it because he didnt really have the money. Dev sent him a free copy.

lets leave it at that, coz then we get into ethics, morality, laws, intrinsic and created value of things, and then it will turn into a shitpile of a thread.moh wrote:Can I steal a Cadillac as long as I recommend it to my friends? The only time i think you should download music is when you dont really have the money to pay for it

It really pisses me off when the postman doesn't even try to ring on your doorstep. Instead he drops one of these cards in your mailbox. And with that card you can get your stuff at the post office the next day

Funny thing is: I was at home => all he needed to do was ring on the doorstep
