Looking for a "perfect" new shmup for my next purchase

Post by Loris Biaggi »

I want to buy a new shmup.
Can you help me to find my perfect game?

i need:
-rapidfire, 2 buttons, 1 to shoot 1 for bombs: i love simple controls, no lock-on, no charge shot!
-bombs must save your ass (not call friends like on strikers 1945)
-jamma pcb
-vertical monitor
-freeplay (not required, but i will prefer)
-cheap, under 100 euro
-i prefer fantasy environment to war
-Psikyo style is what i like more in this period, more than Cave
-not too old game

List of candidates for my next purchase (if you have one for sale, please contact me!):

1) Storm Blade - i've found it!
2) Omega Fighter... nice one!
3) Dangerous Seed... i didn't see pcbs for sale, maybe is not a common game
4) Samurai Aces/Sengoku Ace - i've found it!
5) Flying Tiger i've found it!

"near" perfect games, but not enough to buy:
Gunbird... no rapidfire, bombs are not resolutive for every character and... i don't like charge shot.
Turbo Force, i like it but... where are bombs? And i have a broken board for this game, i need someone to fix it...
Zing Zing Zip, it's what i'm looking for, but it's not a great game
Gekirindan is a good option, but i already had it and it's a little bit dated for me.
Dragon Blaze, almost perfect, but i own it and the dragon shot is not for me
Final Star Force, not a great game, but nice.

Games that almost fit my requests, but still not my games (or just too expensive):
Dimahoo
Batsugun Special
Rapid Hero
Mahou Daisakusen
Thunder Dragon 2
Viper Phase 1

Yes, Dimahoo is good but no rapidfire (i can't use a rapidfire pcb due to charge shot)... and i don't think it's cheap.
I know it's not easy because i need too much features, but that's why i asked to the experts ;)

Dimahoo has rapid fire on "C"

If you only have 2 buttons, then I guess that won't work. Even without rapid, you do't have to mash shot to get a steady stream going, and you play a lot of the game by holding shot down anyways.

I thought Dimahoo was 2 buttons, so... it should be a good choice, i will try it.
I have 3 buttons, it's just i prefer a simple 2 button system.
How much is worth a Dimahoo pcb?

I tried Dimahoo on mame but i think it's not my game.
Another good choice is Dangerous Seed, i don't know if it's as common game.

Batsugun Special fits ALL YOUR CRITERIA except you'll need a time machine to go back to 2005 prices cause now the price counterstopped at $9,999,999

Another game I'd strongly recommend is Giga Wing. It's a fantastic 2-button shmup. It doesn't have autofire built in, and I normally hate shmups without autofire, but Giga Wing is fantastic because it requires such a low tapping speed to max out the firing rate that it doesn't wear out your finger like other games, it's one of the few non-autofire shmups I'm totally okay with playing.

You could also invest in an autofire circuit, that way you could easily play a lot of 2-button shmups with full-auto.

I will try Giga Wing, even if it's not for vertical oriented monitor ;)

the only reason dragon shot "isn't for you" is because you haven't played the game enough to realise that it's actually the best mechanic ever

Looking over this list what comes to mind is Rapid Hero. A shame it's so expensive because I think it fits just what you're looking for. At least give it a shot in mame.

Yes, maybe, but it's just i prefer very simple controls.
Anyway, while waiting to find a new game, i think i will play Dragon Blaze ;)

jepjepjep: Rapid Hero is nice, not a game a would pay a lot of money.

Mahou Daisakusen with Miyamoto and added rapid fire suits the description. Miyamoto's bomb will save you instantly. The korean pcb is quite cheap.

Thunder Dragon 2/Big Bang might fit as well. You either need an auto-fire circuit, or to use p2 ship which has built-in auto.

I think I paid $180 or so for mine a while back, not sure where its at now. Its a fantastic game though, lots of little secrets to discover.

You lucky bastard  TD2 is like twice that or something now. Big Bang is probably considerably less, but I don't have any idea.

RayForce: 2 buttons, normal shot and lock-on shot. Rapid fire should be on by default. If not, you can turn it on in the service menu.

Take a look at Viper Phase 1 *New Version*. One of my favorite 2 button shmups with rapid fire.

It's very straightforward as a pick-up-and-play shmup, but can also be nipple piercing hard to play for score and maximize all the bonus. I've played the first stage hundreds of times and still only get around 60% of the potential.
