Lenghty and sometimes clichéd, but God it's got the hottest lesbian sex scene in film ever (faked but still).
Well thankfully the movie isn't just about sex, it's a love story from beginning to end which feels fucking real, we've got nicely crafted filming and surprisingly good acting from young talents here.
No wonder the lead actresses said they went through Hell, the filmaker is a total maniac for details and the movie is obvioulsy a very 'personal' work.
Some Palme d'Or are complete crap, this time at least they picked something worthy of attention.

I didn't see it, but the graphic novel it's adapted from is great; it's "a love story from beginning to end which feels fucking real" in which the lesbian nature of the relationship merely adds some drama.

Monuments Men 6/10

It was ok. It felt really disjointed, they were traveling to these different places but you never really saw them travelling or got the sense that any time was passing. They would just appear there.

Also thought it was a tad too 'cheery', more "Kelley's Heroes" than I was expecting.

To Live and Die in LA

This movie is so 80's it hurts. But that's why I dig it, amigo, it's righteous. Not the greatest film ever, but Willy Friedkin carries over his edginess from the French Connection and applies it to 1985 cops willing to do bad things to get their target. Willem Dafoe, one of the US's acting treasures as standard, is up there with a reasonably decent cast. Some of the script is a bit funny, but like I said, it's pure 80's. And those tunes. Awesomeness.

You have no idea how amused you've just made me. I'd had no intention of ever seeing anything with Lautner in it, but your mentioning him reminded me *exactly* of what movie you were referring to, since my 12-year-old niece had this very movie poster (with Lautner's picture, only) on her bedroom wall whenever this movie was new in theaters. I remember at the time how juvenile and idiotic it looked...now that you've reminded me of it, I'm that much more amused.

EDITED TO ADD: the proper name of the movie is "Abduction", not "Abducted". Not that it matters all that much with the descriptor you've added, but that's probably the primary reason why I couldn't tell what production you were talking about when I IMDB'ed it originally. Lautner's movie never came up at all.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Plentiful black humour, as can be expected from the Coen brothers, but a very sad story (over the course of a week, the life of a struggling singer takes several turns for the worse).
Excellent scenery, costumes, photography; good acting and good singing (even if you don't like folk music).
The protagonist doesn't talk much; his troubles are mostly hinted at, sometimes quite subtly.

Dune: The Alternative Edition Redux
Thanks to whoever shared this version with me on the shumps IRC. I really didn't know what to expect going in as the original version and even the extended cut are both a jumbled mess that leave the viewer wondering why a lot of things in the movie happened. This I believe turns the movie into something that is actually watchable and makes sense. I quite enjoyed this and burned a copy for my dad as well. Dune finally lives up to what it should have been and the new opening is a better fit. All and all a little lengthy but worth at least one watch. I doubt this is the only fanedit of a movie worth seeing. Any that can be recommended?

I really love that Dune FanEdit myself.

You need to see The War Of The Stars and the (even better) sequel; War Of The Stars II. Both are truly awe inspiring. If you're a Twin Peaks fan, go ahead and watch Northwest Passage and finally, Matrix - The Epic Edition

Just saw The Lego Movie. The story was pretty good (although the ending was a little on the sappy side), and the amount of detail was amazing! I can see why they made a video game out of it.

Pretty much every surprise cameo appearance was fantastic, from the minor mentions of Fabuland and Bionicle to Gandalf/Dumbledore/Milhouse in the Master Builders (the latter of which they hadn't even released yet :p) to the motherfucking Star Wars appearance to the Duplo enemies at the end. And for the sequel, I personally think that maybe they were onto something when they said that those certain universes didn't have to be mentioned...

The Magnificent Scoundrels
Stephen Cow and Ng Ma are quite fantastic in this comedy about people who swindle, and end up trying to swindle each other, not knowing they are in the same business. Moves at a frantic pace for a good portion of this movie, but it sure delivers the laughs. Though there are a few parts, like the drunk kissing that make you go, yea I bet the actors also were grossed out. Still I recommend this!

Just watched this recently:



And it's as shit as it looks. Would never have gone to see it if not for two happenings: 1, that it was the highest-grossing film of all time in China, and 2, my SFIV girl friend (friend wat is a girl) wasn't bored (and wasn't cute) and said we should go and watch a movie.

Knowing I'd just blown a load (of cash) on something absolutely rubbish, she suggested afterward that I watch the previous year's Stephen Chow film, Journey to the West, which is the next part to the Monkey King story we just saw.

And I did, and it's amazing.













Chow has always been the closest to live action Anime, but it helps he's a brilliant director - specifically in comedy - that his films are so good. This one is wild and wonderful: demon hunters chasing down rogue entities in the wild using various methods. Of course if you know Journey to West then you'll already know aspects of the plotline, but Chow's presentation of the material is as fresh and fun as everything else he does.

It's incredibly funny, something his films manage to translate well through subtitles (I find Chinese humour is quite similar to western humour anyway) and a lot of it is visual anyway, which helps. It all gets slightly out of hand by the end (think big battles Kung Fu Hustle style) but that doesn't stop it from being wonderfully entertaining and aesthetically captivating. As ever, his characterisations are the most powerful element of the film, and the opening scene is utterly brilliant.

If you like Stephen Chow, watch this.

If you like Anime, watch this.

If you like films, watch this.

Weird, as prior to this shit Hong Kong Monkey King 3D thing, this was the highest grossing Asian film of all time.

Word of advice: you're looking for the mandarin version, not the Cantonese, which is dubbed. Chow is a Kongker, but as it's Chinese legend he made it in mandarin with mostly mainland actors.

Just finished watching the (informal) Scottish trilogy of Local Hero, Gregory's Girl (Clare Grogan ) and Restless Natives.

The stories are completely unrelated but they all share a certain feeling that fans of eighties whimsy will enjoy.

Warm and gentle humour for all the old romantics out there.

You know when you sometimes have a weird dream about a movie and then wake up compelled to watch it?

Or does that just happen to me?

Had a weird dream about The Golden Child with Eddie Murphy last night - possibly to do with posting all the stuff about Journey to the West on the previous page.

Haven't seen the film in lord, twenty years, and the dream was probably more entertaining. Never realised how weirdly miscast Murphy was; I remember enjoying it as a kid. There's still a fun factor in all the ridiculous plotting, African American/mystical eastern clashing, outlandish stereotyping and general daftness - but it's far from a good movie.

The editing is atrocious, too, about on par with the advertising. The bad guy's Louis Vuitton suitcase was only upstaged by the dancing Pepsi can.

Tidbit: The Golden Child child was a girl.

Will have to check this out at some point, and yea Stephen Chow for the movie I watched. Wasn't directed by him though it had that frantic pace that the movies he directs usually have. So I guess he got it from somebody else the pace of his movies.

Robocop (2014)

A strange mix of good, mediocre and surprisingly bad scenes and elements, which makes one wonder whether the film had an actual director.
On the whole, it is a subtly flawed attempt to reach the level of the original, decent but failing for a number of reasons:

• Too much robo, too little cop. Alex Murphy is almost completely devoid of personality; when he behaves like a person, he seems strange.
• Even a machinelike protagonist could be badass; but this one isn't. He cries and gets injured without reason.
• Jarring plot holes and outright errors, sometimes managing to ruin scenes completely.
• Lack of meaningful violence, replaced by a lot of gunfights with robots and miserable mooks which look impressively like videogames and feel like an athletic performance (Robocop shoots very well).
• Lack of sufficiently bad antagonists, meaning that Alex the absent father, husband and colleague becomes the enemy of the really good guys (his family).

Examples of silly scenes that anybody would have directed better:

• A smart gangster calls for shooting Robocop in the head using .50 bullets or bigger, and he has tens of mooks and a warehouse of guns. But no, they get slaughtered with their pistols and SMGs in their cold dead hands.
• Alex Murphy becomes Robocop because of a bomb placed under his car. This strange device, rather than, well, exploding, merely fills the car with flames. The car doesn't budge; Alex is thrown on the ground. A sprained ankle? A broken arm? No, shortly after we are shown impossibly serious mutilations and we are told that he has fourth-degree burns and he risks losing one eye. Then, after being rebuilt, his eyes are perfectly fine.

Worth seeing as a case study of how to remake a film (mostly, how not) and for the good acting and the interesting work on scenery and design.

watched gravity last night, while grabbing a few saturday night drinks with the room-mate. was drunk enough to keep saying that clooney comes back. so imagine how hard we laughed when he apparently did.

other wise, its a pure visual movie, probably best watched in IMAX 3D, I didnt really enjoy it, kept thinking how watching Space Odyssey would be better.

Flesh + Blood (1985 / dir. Paul Verhoeven / Rutger Hauer, Jennifer Jason Leigh & Tom Burlinson)

Cutthroat 16th century mercenary band take revenge on their dishonest patron, stealing his son's betrothed away to their improvised fort. Grotesque triangle involving merc leader, girl and her fiance ensues, as a bloody shitstorm of siege and plague looms.

Quite enjoyed this one. Strongest and potentially most repulsive feature is the air of pitiless savagery. Murder, rape and general atrocity abound - though steeped in Verhoeven's characteristic black humour, its cruelty is to feelgood medieval romps what The Cross of Iron is to feelgood WWII schlock. Appetite and survival are all. "I DIDNT KNOW WHO THE HERO WAS SAPPOSE TO BE" types will not be amused! Excellent settings and volatile chemistry between the principle characters along with a lively supporting cast made the 2hr uncut runtime fly past.

Suitable alternate title Berserk The Live Action: Gambino Den (cited by Miura - fans will dig the setting).

And Jack Thompson as Arthur from Ghouls n' Ghosts
