Recommended Anime/Manga?

Just finished watching Usagi Drop. A really great and mature show, I recommend watching it even if you don't like kids. It gives you a small glimpse of what's it like to be a father and to take care of someone young.

In theory, you know it's tough. But here you get to see first-hand some of the sacrifices required. Asking for a demotion at the job so you can have more time for the kid, spending almost all of your money and time on the child's needs, and basically all your friends are now other parents and you guys help each other out taking care of the kids. You hardly have time for yourself anymore.

However, seeing your child smiling at the end of the day makes it all worth it for them.

In short, before you decide to have a kid you need to ask yourself: "Am I ready to give up my life for someone else?"

Is that the one where the focal point is on the kid, and there is a bit of CGI? I remember starting that one and just sorta putting it off. Found it kinda "eh." Manga is quite good, however.

yes that's the one - there's loads of CGI and often also just digital effects which are done at a low res, which is a shame as the drawings are very nice modern(er) take on the classic Matsumoto character shapes.

Is the manga translated? I did not know of this - I must check it out so .

Yeah, I believe there were originally only three volumes. The third was recently translated a couple of months back. One of the shorter, popular Matsumoto works.

I'd wait on GE999 since it's not sequential, really. I think a series like that is best at a leisurely pace so you can sink in each story. But to each his own!

Just watched the first episode of Serial Experiments Lain out of curiosity and it was no joke, there's hardly any dialogue in this. Lots of scenery and staring. I don't know what's the appeal of this but I have no interest to keep watching.

Will check out Usagi Drop and Spice & Wolf next.

You have to have an open mind with Lain. It's one of my favorite shows ever(see: moniker), but it can be a slow burn.

It spins a fascinating tale.

Such an insane name, I had to google, and it's the new one from Umetsu - so yeah, specialised in HC porn is more like it. I do like his work though, a really strong animation director, and both Kite and Mezzo were pretty good.

I don't expect the story to develop in something worthy of attention, but just watching the strange characters and art is enough for some degree of entertainment.

Hold on, do you mean to say it's clean? As in, no extreme porn? That would be a first for Umetsu in a good while, he's pretty much associated (and saleable) based on his impressive hardcore scenes. Mezzo uncut is outrageous.

Yup, wouldn't even rank it as 'mildly ecchi'. Only a few suggestive comments, outfits and poses from time-to-time but that's it.

But Umetsu deserves better - he's one of the last truly great animation directors IMO. His understanding of motion and intertia is incredible, and his action sequences some of the best in the business.

I wouldn't write off a porno alternate entirely tho - Mezzo had a completely clean cut issued first, and then the unbelievably graphic porno scenes were slotted in for a later release, engineered to be totally superfluous to the plot.

I'm liking that this is more than two episodes long.

It's been 10 years since I saw it and I'm still not fully recovered. Good gravy.

I'm also on the lookout for some seinen manga worth a read. The Book Off by my house is closing down and manga is on clearance so now would be the time to buy, but I can't for the life of me find any decent manga.

My tastes in manga:

- no computer-y looking art
- nothing funny because nothing Japanese is funny
- no Yakuza
- no sports
- no misogyny (asking for the moon and the stars with this one)

Manga I like:

Akira

Starting to think I should just reread the first 18 volumes of Berserk and call it a day.

Its mysoginy only exists in a historical sense (raping and pillaging Vikings) but even that's fleeting - it's actually respectfully told with enough action to sate the appetites of any Berserk fan. Arguably better, too.

watched Arei No Kagami - a very enjoyable 30 minutes.

The story wasn't that great but it made up for it in sheer Matsumoto 70s (yes I know it was actually made in 1985) warmth.

The art was very nice too, though unfortunately all i could find appeared to be a VHS rip originally, with fairly bad subs too (i think they were Czech to Hungarian to english).

Strong words for sure. I've been keeping an eye out for the first volumes, but I'm admittedly still a doubter. Nothing reaches Berserk's Golden Age arc for me and I worry that I'll constantly be comparing Vinland Saga to it because of the setting. I'll give it a try though!
