Preliminary Metroid Fangame release stuff...for those intere

Post by JacobXScum »

Thanks to a push from this forum, i'm back into production full force.

I've added a hard mode for the people that this game that's hard already isn't hard enough for. It's ridiculous. Also added an easy mode for the ladies, but it will block off certain interesting portions of the game.

Several unlockables added. Areas cleaned up and polished to look nicer and less bland.

Added basic weather effects to crateria.

Two dozen or so bosses complete, with about maybe half a dozen more to go.

Hundreds of screens of level data all placed 16x16 tile by me...ugh.

New enemies added. New puzzles.

New Zones added. Some well hidden and just exist for exploration purposes.

OK. Now i wonder if anyone would be interested in a little contribution. I'm thinking of doing an unlockable "Fan-Art" gallery. If you're interested just come up with something and send it to jacobxscum@pksmetal.com. I'll accept and include all contributions. Seriously. It's a chance to get your name in some game credits. Shit, even if it's just a picture of yourself playing a Metroid game it would be cool...ha. This is a game for the fans by a SERIOUS fan, so whatever.

You're making a Metroid fangame? o_0
What game of the series your game's physics and controls are most similar to?

Ummm...It feels a bit like Super Metroid maybe. But faster. The gravity isn't nearly as weak as it is in SM. Shoot me an email with "metroid" in the subject and i'll send it to you. Goes for anyone else too. It isn't finished quite yet, but there's a CONSIDERABLE amount of playable game. My roommate has been testing for me as i go. He's 15 hours into it and he's at 35% completion. So yeah. It's big. Just be aware, that if you're playing the unfinished product, things may change in your save files as you go. Small things, like there may be a new door somewhere, but changes nonetheless.

Discovered a bug that makes the game crash. Fixed it.

Hid some missile pods better, made others more difficult to get.

Improved a few animations.

Added more "Useless" hallways designed to keep the player more confused about where to go.

Fixed the wall crawling enemies glitch. They don't look quite as nice now, but at least they don't come flying off the walls or spin in one place like idiots anymore.

Slight edits to level layouts so the map is easier to read.

Aesthetic changes in some hallway layouts.

Draygon boss completely rediesigned because he sucked. (It was the last thing i did before going on hiatus, so it looked very rushed.)

If anyone can find a sample of the sound it makes when you pick up a missile in Super Metroid and give it to me, i would be most appreciative. You'll get game credits for this.

Email me with "Metroid" in the subject to recieve the update. jacobxscum@pksmetal.com

beta-ish. I'm pretty sure a beta release has to be at least finished. This one is fully playable, but the last three areas of the game are incomplete.
I feel bad cause the last version i sent out had a crash bug. Rest assured it's fixed now.

Just reached Norfair, enjoying it so far, although it plays noticeably different from the console versions.

Questions:
1. What's that orange X thing?
2. What's this supposed to mean?
3. Are you suggesting there being a normal way to pass this room in realtime? From what I see, it requires quite an amount of etanks, Springball and/or IBJ.
4. Is it possible to IBJ in this game? I've successfully managed to make up to three mid-air ascents, but the next bomb just won't appear in time when I press the button.

Also, lol sequencebreak.

Warning: URLs above may contain spoilers.

I'm so happy none of your problems were gameplay!!!!

1. You are having exactly the problem with the orange X you're supposed to. Just notice that it's the same color as the door.

2. What indeed? Not necessary for game completion, but someone will figure it out.

3. It will be plainly obvious how to pass this much later.

4. All weapons are affected by Refire Upgrades...bombs included. IBJ is purposely difficult in my game. Afgter several Refire Upgrades you can bomb fast enough to IBJ. But the timing required will take some time to master.

5. Congrats on your sequence break. There are more that can be made besides that. Several major ones. My roomate IBJ'd up that one.

P.S. Judging by your completion percentage, you're ready for your first boss. Being the first boss, don't expect an epic brawl, but let me know what you think.

Also, your version is pre crash-bug fix. When you get your first game crash (or before) email me, so i can send you the fixed version. Put "Metroid Fix" in the subject so i know not to send you the full one.

Well, I realized it was a switch connected to the door, it's just that if I need a special item to be used on it, why couldn't I just use it on a door instead?

Ok, a few more questions while I'm at it:

Is completion percentage derived just from the map coverage? I'm at ~25% but I feel like I've barely explored anything. On this note, have you played Metroid: Redesign, a brilliant SM hack by Drewseph? It has some huge-ass map (Norfair alone is larger than the whole SM world), and excellently designed, too.

How many refire upgrades are needed for seamless IBJ'ing? I'm used to SM's merciless IBJ timing, so as long as it's possible, I can handle it; I only have 3 refires, know where to get the 4th (but can't do it yet), but it seems I at least need 5-6?

I will compile and write my opinions on the gameplay a bit later, but until then, could you please allow the ability to reconfigure controls, either by cfg file or something else — the ctrl-shift-a-z-enter scheme is plain horrible.

The orange doors require some thought. Not much, but you'll realize it when you can do it. The keyboard controls are preliminary. You're the first to actually play it with a keyboard. What would be better? Adding customizable keyboard controls is difficult in Multimedia Fusion, but i can work on it. If not, what would you personally prefer? Get yourself a USB gamepad, Wal Mart has great mini ones for 10 bucks....ha. As far as your refire upgrade question, part of the game is figuring out where you can comfortably do things. It may be optimal for you to NOT get all the upgrades. The parts of the game are balanced for a certain amount of refire upgrades, and i will tell you that ten is the absolute MAX you will need to finish it, there are 20 available. Most players, even diligent ones will find 15. Pretty much everything is based around a formula. Casual players will end up with around 50%. Diligent players, maybe 75%. Only the ridiculously thorough people will get 100% completion.

Right now i can't answer your question about how the percentage is calculated. It's a spoiler. Come to think of it, you may want to start emailing me your questions now after all....haha.

No Wal-Marts in Russia. :)
The keyboard controls I used to speedrun Super Metroid with were A = dash, S = jump, D = shoot, W = item cancel, QE = LR, Z = start, X = select, arrows = d-pad. Not ideal, but much easier to accomodate to, and all buttons are within the reach of just six fingers without having to strain them or move the wrist elsewhere.

Btw, you didn't send me the update.

I'll reset it with controls more similar to what you mentioned, and see if you like it better. And yes, it sent the update back to me. So i'm resending. Sorry about that.

Would you mind posting about it in the new 2D Gaming Forum (klick the link in my signature)? Your game would be right at home there.

Abosolutely i will post it there, but i'd rather wait till it's completed. This post was basically a search for people that i don't know to test it. Once there's a more complete version i'll have it up everywhere.

Sorry for the dumb question, but is this a SNES rom hack, or something else?

New hallways added.

Ridley almost complete. (Making him a real bitch, to separate the men from the boys)

More new puzzles. A few missile pods made more difficult to get. Threw in a few REALLY tough puzzles for Moozooh. Cheers, man.

Remapped keyboard controls per request.

Decorated a bit more.

I'm still interested in fan art. It's set up real cool as an unlockable, but i don't have any art for it yet.

Here's the most recent copy he sent by email ("Version 2, Episode 1"):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0SSOM ... sp=sharing

He sent links to newer versions after that, I think, but the site's dead.

I was just searching for the newest / a newer version (I don't know for sure if there is one).
