For Shooters With Timeouts on All Bosses
For Shooters With Timeouts on All Bosses
Have you ever tried going through without shooting? The only game I can think of that works perfectly and even acknowledges no shooting runs is Ikaruga with the "Dot Eater" grade.
Has anyone tried it with other games that could allow such a thing? I love outside challenges like these. 'w`

I used to try doing pacifist runs for certain stages on Gradius III Snes. The first two bosses in particular are quite fun to fight that way.

I've played DOJ's first stage pacifist, but beyond that it gets stupidly hard (if not impossible) because of how much popcorn comes in during later stages.
R-type games can be fun to play force-only (only shoot item carriers until you get the force orb, ignore everything else).
Never cleared anything pacifist though.

I tried it on eXceed 2nd, when Nyu Media was hosting a contest. I went for the lowest score possible ... in a high score competition.
Unfortunately, the replay feature in that game desynchs when the boss fights go on for too long so I wasn't able to submit any of those runs.

Yeah tell me about it, the replay recording in that game is awful. Fun game though.Jeneki wrote:Unfortunately, the replay feature in that game desynchs when the boss fights go on for too long so I wasn't able to submit any of those runs.

This thread talked me into trying with Gradius 5, and it doesn't quite work.
The bosses time out, even the giant brain's eyes explode on their own but there's some walls you have to shoot open in stages 2 and 3. Plus there's a couple eye monsters you have to shoot to get past in stage 2. Unless there's some secret way past them like squeezing between the cubes in ikaruga.

Radirgy, Karous and Illvelo are easier if you play pacifist. If you suck at them, just use the shield and timeout everything.

Oh wow. That is excellent game design.shmuppyLove wrote:Here's the Karous "1-sissy"KAI wrote:Radirgy, Karous and Illvelo are easier if you play pacifist. If you suck at them, just use the shield and timeout everything.

On games with shields, RefleX probably can be cleared without shooting, unless the final boss goes on to his final attack, which has no reflectable bullets, but can be avoided entirely if you kill him early. I think there's no timeout in this game.
I tried playing by only reflecting enemy bullets once, but didn't really get into it.
And playing pacifist seems to be possible in every Touhou. A quick search on youtube turns up a ton of videos doing exactly that. The games even seem to notice you are going for a pacifist run and go extra murderous on you on some final patterns.

The Giga Wing games can all be realistically timed-out, as well as done low scoring (collect as few medals as possible). Just use the shot button only for shielding, and purposefully try to avoid destroying enemies.
Cave games don't work well, if at all, because they pretty much always have popcorn rushes and bosses tend to shoot really fast if you purposefully dawdle on 'em for a while.

You get the bad ending and a shortened game if you don't kill certain bosses in Hellsinker.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

The Psyvariar games look like they would be good for this, maybe plan your level ups for the occasional enemy who kamikazes after shooting.

And if you get to stage 7, there's the wall boss that smashes you if you time it out.God wrote:This thread talked me into trying with Gradius 5, and it doesn't quite work.

Re: For Shooters With Timeouts on All Bosses
I'd love to see someone timeout-ing the bosses of Strikers 1999 and surviving. Their attacks get harder and harder as time passes until they finally blow up shooting lightning-fast bullets everywhere. It's quite awesome to watch.
Re: For Shooters With Timeouts on All Bosses
One day, I was feeling crazy as fuck, I loaded up Arrow Flash, which does NOT have timeouts, and beat it without shooting.
I had to make use of damaging options to beat all the bosses.
It was hellish.
hellish fun.
PS:I died alot.

I have not enough balls to try any of this. :3
I can dot eat up to stage four of Ikaruga. That's about it.

And I forgot all about the regenerating flesh wall in stage 4. Seems like most of the stages have something. Maybe all of them but the first.
It's kinda weird that the last boss times out. It only takes a few seconds too because he doesn't shoot. So you show up, don't shoot, he doesn't shoot you, he explodes and you're like: "Did i really need to show up for this? If he was just going to die for no reason what was the point of going on this mission?".

Blazing star would be interesting to try like this, off the top of my head I can't think of anywhere that would be impassable without shooting.
