RGB jailbars in JP Mega Drive IC BD M5 VA1

Post by Zets13 »

So, I know that a lot of MegaDrives/Genesis consoles have issues with jailbars in RGB. I am currently using a Japanese Model 1 Mega Drive, motherboard version IC BD M5 VA1 with the following cable:

Running it in RGB via my CRT displays very noticeable jailbars in blue. This is obviously a "normal" issue with these consoles, and a solution seems to be to lift pin 50 of SEGA 315-5313. I didn't feel comfortable lifting that pin so I instead followed the trace and removed the first SMT resistor that it went to and made sure there was no continuity between the pads after removal. People seem to have had luck with this method or at the very least say it makes the bars almost invisible, however, I see negligible (if any at all) reduction in jailbars! Still very visible and ugly.

So my question is, has anybody had luck with removing RGB jailbars in this particular motherboard revision?

It's interference from the color subcarrier, lifting pin 50 on the VDP is the only way to permanently get rid of them.

Alright, thanks. And sorry for a stupid question, but is there some reason that bending up the leg would give a different result than removing the resistor that comes immediately after the leg?

I believe it's because the trace that's connected to pin 50 acts like an antenna, and since the RGB output pins are right next to it, they pick up interference from the subcarrier.

Cool, I will lift the leg and see if it resolves the issue.

...And that seems to have resolved the issue. Thanks, ApolloBoy!
