Weekly Online Shmeet #1 (Donpachi) Start

Post by Ramus »

Shmeet started 1 hour early. Next week's poll is here.

Post scores here.

Rules:

Code: Select all

1. Competition is 1 week long. This allows people to get at least one day to do some runs. Some people got work and/or school; this allows for more people to get their scores in.

2. As usual, the games will be played with the default settings.

3. There will be a tier rank system to help tell who has played this before. Basically, the pros will be in the top tier, people with experience will be in the mid tier, and people who have never played or haven't played much will be in the lower tier. All I'm basically doing is splitting up the score board and giving people the chance to strive for some sort of title to your skill. I will just fill the board out like a normal score board. Your score places you; that's all.

4. Can not use scores from a previous scoreboard. Scores must be from the week the current competition game is played

5. Emulation is okay. Not everyone can afford PCBs :)

6. When there is a significant differnece in versions of a game, the system to be used will be specified.

7. As with any scoreboard, please be honest and don't make up scores. Such offenses will cause said player to rot in hell.

8. Rules subject to change when I think of more that will improve the competition or if someone else comes up with a good idea. New rules can be voted in by poll. Old rules can be voted out by poll. If you have an idea, don't be affraid to speak; I'll poll it as long as it's not ridiculous (example of bad rule: Let's limit the games to just PCBs.)

9. All scores will be posted. There will not be just 10 spots. Everyone who plays will be put on the board.

10. Don't post multiple scores. Just edit your post with your new score so I don't have to keep looking around for your highest score. Thanks.

11. Once a game is chosen, it will not be eligible for the poll for 1 month.

12. Please don't vote unless you plan to play. I want the players --not the spectators or people who love to vote in polls just to vote-- to chose their game.

13. The new poll will be posted 1 week in advance (current poll is exempt from this because I just thought to do this) from the time shmeet. So when we start on Monday, there will also be a new poll for the following week's game.

14. Again, we can vote on these rules at any time to change them. If you don't like something, please speak up.

This sounds interesting. I'd like to see some more people improving on their scores rather than rehashing their old scores from the past.

Sounds good, I'd like a game that doesn't get much high score action normally. A criminally underplayed game like cyvern would be nice.

Well I vote Batrider. But perhaps it should be a little known game to even things out a bit.

Cyvern was going to be in the next poll along with Dragon Breed and some other shmups that don't get enough attention. Thanks for the second on Cyvern :) .

I don't get the point of this...is this event just to introduce people every week to shooters they've never played before with the added social pretexts of friendly competition and limited time?

Otherwise, the experts at whatever games who've already played for hundreds of hours will easily dominate everybody else with their scores since it'll be impossible for people who haven't already played much to learn the games (assuming they're not supereasy) enough to amass great scores within a week, esp. considering everybody's schedule.

But hey, good luck with it.

It's just for fun. Sure, sometimes someone will dominate because they have been playing for awhile, but they will not dominate everything. A player may place first in one game and last in another. Besides, people can check the normal high score boards and see if the top player had an advantage of years of play. It's to be expected that masters of a game would want to compete and see if their skills have deminished; it's the nature of the beast.

It's meant to keep things fresh and also prevent burning out and/or bordom with a game or shmups in general. If you need a break from a game, come play the weekly online shmeet. It'll be fun.

The reason it's a week long is to let people who work and have school to have at least one day to get a few good sesions in. I didn't really design this for people to play their guts out for a week straight with no sleep, although they can if they wish. For diehard shmupers like that, there are the regular highscore boards. As long as one person other than myself plays, I'll keep this going. If it dies, it dies. Yeah, it's pretty much a social thing and introduces and/or reintroduces games to the members of the board.

Cool idea, Ramus. Casual competition like this could be refreshing.

I haven't played anything Psikyo in a while, so I put in for Gunbird.

I want to do this, but I don't own hardly any games and don't use MAME. Boo.

The only even remotely new games I've got are Strikers 1945, Kingdom Grandprix, Layer Section, and Darius Gaiden. All the rest are NES and Genny shooters.

I third Cyvern, but of the poll options I'd say Pulstar. I'm in the mood for a little masochism

Okay, just suggest it and I'll poll it. Kingdom Grand Prix sounds good for the next poll. We can do console games too. Most people have access to emulators, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm going to try my best to make this accessable to everyone.

I would take part on it.

But oh please, not Donpachi.. havent we played the hell out of Cave games yet?

I voted for 1943, just because I feel is the least played game there, and I love oldschool shmupping :)

I made a tier ranking system for such things. I just hope I can make it into tier II.

Hey mate, a suggestion...

Maybe you should make separated threads for each week...

For example, when this week with Donpachi is closed, we should just close the thread, but NOT delete it, so we can always come back and see who won, how the results went, etc.

Maybe this will clutter the hi-score board too much though... what other people think about that?

I made a new thread for the poll in the shmup meet section. I was going to keep at least two or three weeks of scores on the Hi Scores thread and delete the older scores as time went on. If you guys want me to make a new Hi Score thread every week I will, but that's and extra 51 threads in the Hi Scores area every year (assumiong it lasts that long). Let me know how you guys would like to see this done. Would you want to look up old scores from weeks or months ago, or would you like me to just keep the scores for a few weeks?

The new poll thread is here.

How is it determined which tier a person falls into? By score, reputation, or what? Just wondering.

Or maybe a whole new board for it?

I dunno, that's just brainstorming...

I think the tiers are chosen by "area of score", but that's just my guess.

I mean, let's make a random hi-score chart.. something like this:

1st place - 18,765,000
2nd place - 15,643,200
3rd place - 14,986,500
4th place - 14,134,500
5th place - 9,654,200
6th place - 8,983,100
7th place - 7,777,500
8th place - 7,123,400
9th place - 3,456,100
10th place - 2,012,300
11th place - 1,200,344

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th is Tier I. 5th 6th, 7th, 8th are tier II and 9th, 10th, 11th are Tier III

I don't know if that was the idea, but I think it could work nicely (Though if the scores are all very close this may be hard to do)

Another crazy idea I had was to have a random person to choose the games for the next poll..

Something like "In the next week, the 4rd place in the current compo will choose the games for the next poll".....

And to go in a even more crazy area... maybe we could have a monthly ranking and a year ranking made like the ATP tournament is done (Even if just for fun.... no serious competition, prizes or anything..)

Hmm.. maybe now I am pushing it too much? :)

It's a shame that netplay on emulators isn't very good (at least for international matches).
I would have suggested a league table or knockout competition for Twinkle Star Sprites. ^_-

Just score. IMO, i feel better when I'm striving to reach a certain level rather than be the best. With tiers, I can hope to be in tier II and still be happy about it instead of just trying for #1. All I was basically doing was grouping the higest scores in tier I, good tp mid-ranged scores in tier II, and beginners in tier III. If we play a game like ESPGaluda or something where there are alot of scores, it feels better to be in 7th place in tier II rather than saying 14th or 15th place all around.

I dunno, if everyone hates it we can get rid of the tiers.

I think a ranking of some sort should be established. We could base points on how often you fall into a certain tier and add the points together and determine rank kind of like a curve in college. I would have to probably make another threadjust to keep track of the points that every player earns. I'd better put a lot of thought in to it so I don't have to waste my time then have to go back and fix it.

Sounds good to me. Thanks for offering. I want to make a ranking system and post thread where we can list all the stats so people can track their progress. It can show how many online shmeets they played, how many times they finished in each tier, and a total of rank points. I just need to figure out how the points are going to determine rank and how many points should a player recieve for finishing in a certain tier. Let me know if you have any idea.

Maybe we should just do a point system when a player reaches a certain number of points, the next rank will be attained. That sounds easiest. Would we just call it rank 1-10 or should we give names to the rank like piolt, ace, or what ever? I was thinking of giving away a PCB or something every year to the top winner or something. I think this is getting out of hand. HAHAHA  . But seriously, I'd like to do this; it's fun for me. Let me know if you are still interested in helping out. Doing this every week looks like it's going to be alot of work.

Sounds good, I like your logic behind it.

This whole thing sounds like a lot of fun though you're starting to pile up the work for yourself it looks like. Still, the idea of stat tracking and whatnot sounds great. I look forward to being on the bottom of the bottom tier for every meet.
