Console good Tate bad Tate list
Console good Tate bad Tate list
I did do a search for this but came up blank.
Has anyone every done a list of console shooters that have a tate mode but also says if it is a good implementation or a bad one?
To expand on this. Vertical shooters on consoles since the Playstation and Saturn do offer Tate modes on a number of games. However some are good implementations and some are awful.
A good implemenatation is a game where you can selet Vertical screen in the option and the game from that point onwards remains with a vertical screen, all menus, game screens and demos are the correct way and will only go back to horizontal if you change it. A good example of this is Trigger Heart Excelia on the Dreamcast.
An okay implementation is when the game has a tate mode, which stays in tate unless you quit that mode. However certain game modes may not be available in tate. An example of this would be Game Tengoku on the Saturn.
A bad implementation is one where you can play a tate mode of the game but once the game is over it goes back to horizontal screen mode or even worse stay in Tate mode but have menus and demos in non tate an example of this would be Trigger Heart Excelia on the Playstation 2.

such a resource would be handy, as well as models of trinitrons/WEGAs etc that are built to hold up for this kind've purpose, as i'm told the tubes in some sets won't manage well.
...go play Mars Matrix

I honestly can't remember a vertical shmup on Saturn, PS2 or 360 that doesn't have a tate option. My PS1 collection is too small to comment on that. There are probably some but their number must be rather small. I don't count stuff like Caladrius because they were made in mind the way they are.
The 8/16 bit era is different on this regard though.

Mobile Light Force (Gunbird, PS1) and Mobile Light Force 2 (Shikigami no Shiro, PS2) both lack TATE options.
I don't think any of the shooters on the Taito compilation released in the states have TATE (Gun Frontier and Gekirindan definitely don't)
Strikers 1945 (Strikers 1945 II, PS1) released in the states also lacks TATE.
Does Gekioh (Shienryu) have TATE?
Goddamn, did they have to change every name?

The first two Japanese volumes don't either, though the latter pair does.dunpeal2064 wrote:I don't think any of the shooters on the Taito compilation released in the states have TATE (Gun Frontier and Gekirindan definitely don't)
Same goes for Raiden Project, though supposedly there's a way to access it with a Game Genie or some such device...Strikers 1945 (Strikers 1945 II, PS1) released in the states also lacks TATE.
Nope, though the Saturn and PS2 releases do.Does Gekioh (Shienryu) have TATE?

Re: Console good Tate bad Tate list
Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus on the Saturn has tate, but only for the main arcade mode. There's an arrange mode that's only playable in horrendous wobble mode.

Re: Console good Tate bad Tate list
The very best implementations let you rotate the screen in either direction. Also, having the controls be rotated independently, so if you don't have a vertical monitor setup, you can play it as a hori. Ikaruga is an example IIRC.
Re: Console good Tate bad Tate list
Giga Wing Generations (PS2) has no tate option (the original arcade game utilizes a 3:4 aspect ratio).Teufel_in_Blau wrote:I honestly can't remember a vertical shmup on Saturn, PS2 or 360 that doesn't have a tate option.
Re: Console good Tate bad Tate list
Detana! Twinbee on the Twinbee Deluxe Pack also doesn't support tate. I believe it's the only Saturn vertical shooter that doesn't.Kiken wrote:Giga Wing Generations (PS2) has no tate option (the original arcade game utilizes a 3:4 aspect ratio).Teufel_in_Blau wrote:I honestly can't remember a vertical shmup on Saturn, PS2 or 360 that doesn't have a tate option.
