All of them. Shmups are the true suck of life, especially horizontal.
Horizontal shmups are the reason I don't think world peace will ever be possible. I seriously cry a bit whenever I'm reminded of them and all the pain and suffering they've caused.

overall considered good by the community but to which I didn't connect properly:
Espgaluda
Dimahoo
Metal Black
is Mamoru-kun a good one?
that's another "meh" on my part
and why do people consider Mamoru-kun a shmup and not Mercs?
they behave "exactly" the same way, bar the 360º ability to shoot in the latter

I'm sure you will change your mind if Zun makes a Yoko shmup.Smokey wrote:Horizontal shmups are the reason I don't think world peace will ever be possible. I seriously cry a bit whenever I'm reminded of them and all the pain and suffering they've caused.

I'd cry until I threw up. I know what it's like to lose someone like that.KAI wrote:I'm sure you will change your mind if Zun makes a Yoko shmup.
I used to have a cat, named Mittens. She was normal, cuddly, lazy etc. Basically a fucking cat. But, like all good people, she got old. She went senile. She would piss and cough up hairballs everywhere, meow in pain, sometimes even beat the shit out of the dog. Of course we couldn't let her suffer any longer, as that would be cruel. We took her to be put to sleep and cremated.
ZUN has been getting a bit old, been doing some weird stuff... But if it ever came to that, I would do it. I would pull the plug on him. I don't think I'd be able to watch him suffer any longer, and I'd know he'd feel the same way for me.
I love you ZUN, always.

Can't say I ever got into Pink Sweets, Dimahoo, ESP Galuda, Ikaruga. Pink Sweets has the babes for shallow twats like me, so I should probably give that another chance.

Darius gets a pass from me for a couple reasons:XoPachi wrote:Does that include the other "ius"? Darius? 'w`Blackbird wrote:I can't get into Gradius. I'm really clumsy, so games that punish death extremely harshly (with the loss of all powerups) don't mesh with me well.
1 - Awesome Zuntata music. (not that Gradius music isn't awesome, but...)
2 - Cyborg fish are really fun to blow up.
3 - Item management is streamlined in Darius. It's really simple to activate powerup items in Gradius, but that tiny extra step of having to actually press a button to activate powerups is an extra distraction. I'm a total noob, so I need all my concentration for dodging as it is.

Batrider: I know all sorts of people here think it's the best of the Raizing games, but mostly I just find it confusing. Then again, a lot of people don't like Bakraid, and it's easily my favorite Raizing game.
Darius Gaiden: There's some great bosses in this game, but the boss fights themselves just feel like trying to chop down a tree with a steak knife. G-Darius doesn't look nearly as nice, but also feels a lot more accessible.
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu: I've probably played more of this than I have of any of the other Dodonpachi games, and I tend to enjoy it through the first three stages or so, but there just seems to be a point where you just get sick of it around stage 4.
Dangun Feveron: More than any other Cave game, this game feels unrelentingly fast, almost too much to keep up with.
Thunder Force 3: It's hard to go back to this one after playing TFIV.

Another good call: love the cheesy disco theme (IMO they coulda done it up even more) and the easy-to-understand scoring system, but I simply have no idea how the top players at this game manage to dodge precisely at the movement speed required for high scores.Vexorg wrote:Dangun Feveron

Re: Good shmups you don't enjoy.
ok I will admit that I probably know the least about shmups here, but for me for some reason, much as I love their look and style, I can't really get into Raiden games, the 'feel' of them or something doesn't gel with me, I don't know why.

Speakin' some sense here. Though I do enjoy Feveron even though I have a hard time stayin' alive on the top (of the screen) like those players.BulletMagnet wrote:Another good call: love the cheesy disco theme (IMO they coulda done it up even more) and the easy-to-understand scoring system, but I simply have no idea how the top players at this game manage to dodge precisely at the movement speed required for high scores.Vexorg wrote:Dangun Feveron

Battle Garegga for me, but not for the regular reasons like getting the hang of it rank-wise etc.
The real problem I have with garegga is how the game plays once you've got it, or more precisely what is garegga without the worry of rank management.
As I see it, underneath the rank, garegga is a very basic game (albeit a very difficult one) with a rather boring level design that doesn't offer much content and actually feels more like a score-attack game (not a fan of this type) rather than a regular shmup, and I find it kinda hard to enjoy at that level.
APB and BB are games that I find a lot more enjoyable, because they improve on the BG formula with a much better level design/content/mechanics, they are simply a lot more fun to play.

Treasure's shmups, though Gradius V is ok, just too long.
Re: Good shmups you don't enjoy.
The R-Type series. I know they are renowned, and the enemy/art design is fabulous and unique. It is all memorization and little of reaction and freeflow. T

Re: Good shmups you don't enjoy.
Part of what makes the R-Type games special for me is the stage layouts. IMO, the R-Type series has the best level design out there. There is quite a bit of memorization, but unlike some other games, following a route in R-Type is pretty easy. There are lots of little cues, warnings, and other things that make memorization much easier in these games compared to most. But yeah, you won't be getting to the end of the game on reaction alone.blufang wrote:The R-Type series. I know they are renowned, and the enemy/art design is fabulous and unique. Re: Good shmups you don't enjoy.
I have no problems with memorization being part of the formula, but it is much too heavy handed for my tastes in the r type games. There is usually only one correct way of doing things, it doesn't really encourage creativity. I have played R type 1 and Delta (though admittedly Delta I only rented with a friend and we didn't get to the end).

Musha Aleste and Robo Aleste. Expecially the first one which is praised so much. Even thought I like Compile shmups I didn't enjoyed these games so much.

I like DFK, but stage 5 killing.

Re: Good shmups you don't enjoy.
I really like the carnage of DFK. 'u`
But the last stage felt waaaaay too long.

Re: Good shmups you don't enjoy.
this just seems like another "games you don't like" thread. quite a few of the games in here are considered bad/not good or are actually bad, or are being called out because they're being considered bad, or... yeah. we need a "break down our genre" thread, some justice needs to be served to batsugun over there.
a very large part of this genre is memorization, unless you just wanna play bosconian or something all day. even geometry wars has more memorization than bosconian, iirc.blufang wrote:The R-Type series. Hyperduel... I try and try and try but it never grows on me. I want to love this game, but after 10 min my mind is wandering and looking for something else to play.
