Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
Tired of using pad, just want to buy an arcade stick to play SDOJ without hassle, modding, etc. Ideally, one close to the feel of Japanese arcade cabs, budget around $120 (lol). I'm used to playing fighting games in the arcade, so I figure the transition to stick for shmups should be easy.
Any suggestions?

Any of the HRAPs are pretty good. There's a fellow member here who's selling one right now for a good price.

Highly highly highly recommend the Qanba Q4. Really good stick, everyone I know with one will agree that it's pretty much amazing.

Wow. I wasn't even in the market, and I'm tempted to pick up a Q4.
Re: Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
Seconding the recommendation of the Qanba Q4. I have two of them, they work on 360, PS3 and are plug-n-play on PC.
I also have a Qanba Q2 (?) think that's what it's called, a different model that sports a tougher build (this thing is like a baby grand piano and is heavier than the Q4 as a result). The stick feels tighter as well. That's my 360 STG stick (since it is 360 only I believe).
Man, I have never seen value/quality in a stick like the Qanbas. At the price I was getting them, which a couple of years ago was about AUS $220, nothing else compared.

I wanna see a head-to-head between the Hayabusa (new parts) against the Quanba. I'm sure there's a price differential there too.

I have a Qanba Q3 myself, very good stick. Piano black, incredibly solid, and high quality parts out of the box. However, it's been to a few events and traveled a few hundred miles, so it has some scuffs... which look really bad against the otherwise-impeccable paintjob
Still awesome and very much recommended.

If you're not worried about having a stick for PS3 and Xbox, I recommend what Hori has to offer. I like the VX-SA (very light, nice wrist ramp) for 360 and the Soul Calibur V stick (heavy, big) for PS3. I prefer Sanwa for shmups, so, all Sanwa. There are probably some newer sticks by Hori that may be worth looking into.

I use a Street Fighter 4 Tournament Edition for X360 and PC, with a Seimitsu LS-32-02 instead of the Sanwa that usually comes with it. Nice and comfortable, and it's easy to pop open and swap parts.

totally agree and works straight out of the box on the 360, ps3 and pc.
i also have a hori sx-va which is also very good playwise but is not as bulky, sturdy and good lookin as as the q4.
Re: Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
Another vote for the Qanba Q4. I use it for everything I can and adore it!
Re: Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
another good thing about the q4 is that they applied some cloth beneath the stick that makes it sit very tight on your lap while using it
Re: Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
Well, the Qanba has a JLF, so you'll have to get a Q4 + a Hayabusa and switch out the JLF, as the Hayabusa is just the lever. Easy peasy. Or where you thinking of the HORI Fighting Edge?Ed Oscuro wrote:I wanna see a head-to-head between the Hayabusa (new parts) against the Quanba. I'm sure there's a price differential there too.

150 $
same stick, slightly different look. i paid around 150 € for the bigen labeled version here in germany, so 150 $ seems a good deal

So lots of people shooting with JLF vs the SE parts?

Thanks guys, been researching, and sitting on the HRAP SE for the all Seimitsu parts, which is supposed to be better for shmups than Sanwa parts. I really don't know though, seeing I've never used either, and barely have a handling on the stick "terminology" too

Re: Decent out-of-the-box stick for shmups?
Dude, don't worry about debating which one to get. Try one stick and see if it fits your playing style, then go to another and such. Same goes with buttons, it's preference and shouldn't hinder the way you play (or so I believe).sojtrash wrote:Thanks guys, been researching, and sitting on the HRAP SE for the all Seimitsu parts, which is supposed to be better for shmups than Sanwa parts. It's interesting that different Japanese STG super players utilize both Sanwa and Seimitsu for their preferred set up as an example, Clover-TAC, a superplayer prefers to play with Sanwa while Kamui, the super player of Battle Garrega fame, prefers Seimitsu.
So, it's an issue of personal preference highlighted by top tier players.
Seimitsu sticks are gaining in popularity with Qanba now offering SE or Seimitsu arcade stick lines similar to Hori, so more options are becoming available for obtaining an out of the box Seimitsu equipped button and stick retail layout.

you will get used and adept to one stick once you started playing with it. i know there are some guys here and in the fighting community that are obsessed with discussing if to use sanwa or seimitsu parts but as long as you are getting something high quality you should be good to go.
