Good shmups you don't enjoy.

Post by Captain »

It is exactly what the title says.

I myself could never enjoy Doj or anything that came after it, but loved ddp and dp. Something just feels off in the latter games. (I can and did 1cc them)

Yagawa. I try hard every so often to revisit APB and Bakraid, but then I get into the nitty gritty mechanics and I just don't find them enjoyable.

Mushi I love, but I refuse to play the original seriously for score, all that obtuse optimal button mashing to cash in counters...

Every Cave shmup released after 2007 (meaning all final hardware generation starting from DFK).

Also Ikaruga, R-Type...

Also on the Yagawa sentiment (bar Recca).
Maybe one day I'll stop being a filthy casual and enjoy glorious rank management and gratuitous boss milking.

DDP DFK though I haven't played Black Label, Radiant Silvergun, and Ikaruga. The feeling/illusion of constraint with all three kinda irritates me.

Playing Silvergun with the 360's controller boggles my mind.

Radiant Silvergun.

Part of it is me being lazy to not sit down and figure out ONE troublespot for a couple hours which is probably a huge part of getting through the game, but at the same time I just don't enjoy it so far for some reason. Bought it two years ago and have been a bit disappointed at it so I haven't tried it much.

Cannot enjoy Battle Garegga and Batrider, no matter how much I try. I like Bakraid and the first two Mahou Daisakusen games though.

Also R-Type and anything Konami has done, ever.

Every shmup I recall ever enjoying appealed to me early on. I've yet to find acquired taste within this genre.

One shmup I can see it's a good game but I can't enjoy no matter what: Air Gallet.

- The ship is slow and has a huge hitbox for such a hectic game. You can speed up the ship for a short while but you can never pull off that move consistently and it triggers at the worst times.

- Most of the scoring revolves around the items you need to wait until they become gold to pick up. Often this waiting will get you killed.

- None of the weapons are satisfying to use. The red spread is too weak, laser is not a viable weapon to use at all times, hunter is so bad you'll die if you pick it up, and missiles have a huge delay between each missile attack and you only have a peashooter to protect yourself in the meantime.

I just find myself hating this game whenever I give it a try.

I used to hate the Hunter, then I was told I was using it wrong. It's the only weapon in the game that has built-in autofire, and it actually is much weaker if you use it with autofire! Make sure you have a non-autofire shot button so you can use the hunter effectively if you pick it up, it's nearly as strong as the laser is when you're firing it forward (and holding the shot button locks the option in place so you use it as a laser substitute).

Agreed about the giant hitbox and the weird barrel roll mechanic that kicks in at bad times. The game is fun for me, but not as fun as it could be.

I'm also not fond of the Psikyo style medalling... it's very satisfying when you get a large medal chain going, but it feels almost impossible to do outside of the first couple of levels!

Trizeal, Border Down. Although to be fair, I haven't given Trizeal much time, and the last time I played Border Down was a decade ago.

Border Down
Psyvariar 2
Shikigami no Shiro series

I'd include Radirgy, Karous, etc but they aren't even good shmups.
- Most of the scoring (in Akuu Gallet) revolves around the items you need to wait until they become gold to pick up. Often this waiting will get you killed.
You can also pick them up instantly for full value! I like for once that the weapons aren't over powered, makes it feel like a real uphill battle and even more satisfying to clear.

:( No need to be mean!

For me Radiant Silvergun, I been trying to get into it but I just can't. Also Gradius and R-Type.

actually laughed pretty hard. I still like milestone if that helps any :)

the bigger blow for me is Psyvariar 2 which used to be one of my favorite shmups. it actually hooked me into the genre before discovering CAVE, and it holds a special place in my heart because it was the first shmup I ever 1CCed (including gluon). had I never 1CCed it, I probably wouldn't have been looking for other challenges in the genre and probably wouldn't even be on these boards. I dislike any other psyvariar tho.

DOJ - can I just not chain for a second? And can we get some music that isn't terrible?
Pink Sweets - even if I liked this one, the color palette makes me want to barf.

I like stage 2+5 song in DOJ a lot.

simple: ignore Cave's retarded scoring systems. Cave games are now fun!

It's hard to see how anyone can enjoy this.

OT: Not a fan of Garegga and its unintuitive rank system.

R-type 2 for me.

Literally all the R-types are great for me (even final in its own way), but R-type 2 fails to amuse me.

Don't feel bad about it. Yagawa admitted outright in an interview that Garegga, etc.'s rank mechanics were a cold-hearted ploy to increase arcade revenues.
