Duo or Duo R? UPDATE: Looking for modders
OK, so I went ahead and have a lovely white PC Engine Duo R coming in from Japan.
The thing isn't modded in any way. So, I have to do something about that.
Can anyone recommend modders for this task? Looking for RGB mod and region switch.
I know good people for Sega and Nintendo stuff. But not a whole lot for modifications of PC Engines. Repairs yes, mods no.
Has to be in the U.S..

Re: Duo or Duo R?
Duo-R's don't have the ticking timebombs that are the regular Duo's capacitors as they will or are leaking. Plus I like the AV port being in the back rather than on the side like with the Duo. Get a Duo-R to save yourself a lot of grief.

Re: Duo or Duo R?
Worth noting that the Duo RX is the same as a Duo R but a slightly different colour and with a much worse controller. The same controller in fact as a NEC PC-FX, if I'm not wrong.

Re: Duo or Duo R?
Thanks guys.
Oh, and the Duo R also has to be modded to have RGB out as well?

No PC Engine model offered anything better than composite by default.

OK. I don't know a whole lot about the systems. My Duo is RGB modded though.

Re: Duo or Duo R?
Does the RX and R have the same laser? I have a couple of "official" replacement lasers. It says on the box "PC Engine Duo - Rx".speedlolita wrote:Worth noting that the Duo RX is the same as a Duo R but a slightly different colour and with a much worse controller. Not sure if it means all of those in between or what.

The Duo-R and RX are exactly the same internally so yes.evil_ash_xero wrote:Do the RX and R have the same laser?

I hear calibrating a new laser on the PCE can be a bit of a faffle though.

Well, I ain't doing it, so it's not my problem.
What my problem is, is finding a modder. I'm a little perplexed no one has mentioned any body yet.

It probably would have been easier (and cheaper) to buy a pre modded one. You could maybe try to sell the one you just bought and grab one from this guy on ebay:evil_ash_xero wrote:Well, I ain't doing it, so it's not my problem.

He seems to list about 3 or so BINs a week and usually puts them up between 11PM and 1AM EST. His Duo-R's have new lasers, TG-16 Hu card mod, and RGB for $300 shipped. He also sometimes sells one with S-video, but they are more money and usually have a box included. They do sell really fast though. I bought one a few months ago and can say that he does a great job.
If you do find a modder for the one you just bought, I'm thinking the RGB and Hu card mods are not going to be cheap.

Re: Duo or Duo R? UPDATE: Looking for modders
Yeah, I checked out his page first. He didn't have anything listed, so I went ahead and bought what I bought. I bought a PC Engine Duo modded from him a couple of years back.
I would be really shocked if I can't find a modder who can do this in the U.S. though.

OR, could someone link me to a PC Engine forum? I'm sure to find some luck there.

You could try here:evil_ash_xero wrote:OR, could someone link me to a PC Engine forum? I'm sure to find some luck there.

someone on there asked pretty much the same question today, and there are a few names listed so hopefully one of the people mentioned can do it for you.:

Here is one of the guys websites:

It looks like its going to be pricey which is why i was suggesting it may be better to start over and buy one pre-modded. Unless you got your non-modded one for real cheap.

Re: Duo or Duo R? UPDATE: Looking for modders
It would be less pricey than selling my system and getting a new one. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to sell it for what I paid for it(never can). People always want something for nothing.
I don't see a SCART(I know component is the same thing) option on that guy's site. Any feedback on this fellow? I don't want a Drakon-like experience.
I am signing up to that forum, because it won't let me see anything until I do.

Re: Duo or Duo R? UPDATE: Looking for modders
I just saw it when I scanned the site. He seems reputable though. I dont visit that forum too often. Not sure if I have ever even posted on there. Im sure once you register you can read up a bit on your options. He listed a few more people in that thread that do mods also, but that was the only website I saw.evil_ash_xero wrote:It would be less pricey than selling my system and getting a new one. I think component takes the rgb and puts it through another board so it should be cheaper. Im not sure what they would do about a connector and scart cable though.

OK, this seems to have me on a decent path.
Thanks. I'll post questions here, if I can't find out anything there.
