Getting worse at shmups as I improve and gain confidence. Like, trying to squeeze through small gaps even though there's no benefit in doing so (other than sheer exuberance), and dying horribly as a reslut.

So I'm playing the new Final Fantasy XIII game and am at the part where you have to find the number code in Luxerion. Apparently the last one is in the Warren, which is LOCKED! How the FUCK am I supposed to get in there?!

Dejavu so much. Seems like every advance I make in a game is counterbalanced by making the sloppiest overconfidence/distraction mistakes on parts I thought I already dominated.Krooze L-Roy wrote:Getting worse at shmups as I improve and gain confidence. Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
My computer monitor just died. So I just went through the fun process of buying a replacement after trying to figure out if the old one was still in repairbale shape. $$$ I did not want to spend right now, but oh well, shit happens I guess.
It't just really surprising how much of an inconvenience that ended up being.
Also, I can't connect to IRC today for reasons I don't even begin to understand, which is really fucking annoying.

Silicon, or silicone? Bonus aggravation from not knowing of any situation where it makes a practical difference (i.e., the correct usage is obvious from the context).

Using the wrong aspect ratio.
Not just when archive footage in news reports gets stretched to 16:9 despite being 4:3, but when people don't know how to work their TV and watch old TV programmes stretched to 16:9. Urgh.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Ooh, how about this one:
16:9 television. 16:9 source image. Broadcast over 4:3 signal with letterboxing. Stretched to 16:9.
I've seen this in nearly every restaurant I've been to here. It drives me absolutely bonkers.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
It's just as annoying for games too, especially compilations that can't be set up to the correct ratio at all. The Toomanygames convention was disappointing is this regard. Most of the classic systems were on HD TVs and some weren't even set to the correct aspect ratio. At least there was that one booth there that had a NES multigame setup on an SD TV with a nice selection of games, including Tengen Tetris and the infamous Bubble Bobble Part 2.TransatlanticFoe wrote:Using the wrong aspect ratio.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I've only ever seen that with people who've been stumped by a 4:3 letterbox DVD, rather than anamorphic widescreen (as they are, perhaps understandably, used to). I have a few and praise my TV's zoom function as a result. Seriously, why are there DVDs like that?
Are people not bothered by heads being wider than they are high or something??

Wait, a convention did that? Woah. That's the sort of thing I expect from the average person who finds a SNES in their attic and vaguely remembers how to work it.BrianC wrote:It's just as annoying for games too, especially compilations that can't be set up to the correct ratio at all. Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
The worst is ports of older games that don't have proper aspect ratio settings. I've played a few different 360 ports that have messed this up. The Gunstar Heroes port has no "lock aspect ratio" or "zoom %" options, so you can't see what percentage you've zoomed in the screen, and you have to adjust the horizontal and vertical stretch separately, you can't increment them both by the same amount except via guesswork (it also removed the ability to use continues in co-op by taking half the other player's health, which ruined it for introducing it to newer players because I'd always be alive and having to suicide so they can rejoin, fucking stupid).
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I heard it has bad input lag, as well. I like the Wii VC one, though it lacks online. Now that I have the cart, I hardly use the VC one. I might use it when someone comes over for convenience, but I rather play it on the HDG Genesis.BareknuckleRoo wrote:The worst is ports of older games that don't have proper aspect ratio settings. Toomanygames is the name of the convention. It's in Oaks, PA. It's not bad, but it hasn't been well organized. It also had a bunch of arcade games together with half on free play and half not. Another problem is that the games area had mostly common games (NES set up with Dr. Mario or SMB2 US, for example). There was a Dreamcast set up there with a badly scratched THPS2 that kept freezing.Wait, a convention did that? Woah. That's the sort of thing I expect from the average person who finds a SNES in their attic and vaguely remembers how to work it.

Re: Aspect ratio in games, Guwange for 360 pre patch + Deathsmiles2 comes to mind. Playing a 4:3 game displayed with borders inside a 16:9 window that is displayed on a 4:3 screen letterboxed. ugh.

You are a small group of people (or anything), the enemy waits for a weakness and picks you off one by one strategically, only you remain, and then they just gangrape you due to their superior numbers.
The general concept of this situation occurring in vidyo games can annoy you to smithereens, be it any game.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Gradius Collection's aspect ratio and size options bug me.
Gradius I: Original resolution / pillarboxed / stretched
Gradius II: Original / pillarbox / stretch
Gradius III: Original / pillarbox / stretch
Gradius Gaiden: Original / stretch. No pillarbox option. So much for playing my favorite game in the series.
Gradius IV: Pillarbox / stretch
Radiant Silvergun on XBLA is also pretty dumb, as not only do non-widescreen users get punished with a very small screen (good luck playing on a CRT), but, to my knowledge, there hasn't even been a patch for it. I don't care about the extra bloom or other minor visual issues, I just want to play the game at a reasonable window size.

What about forcing games from the PS2/NGC era (earlier through emulation) into widescreen with patches and Swiss? They sometimes give off crazy artefacts.

Yeah, that was how I felt. I wouldn't bother with a response video, though. It's obvious to anyone that he had no clue what he was talking about.Edmond Dantes wrote:Speaking of Youtube, I feel dirty now.
Thanks to their "recommended for you" thing, I found out that Nostalgia Critic had done a review of... Sailor Moon. Oh fucking God. My first instinct was "don't watch it, don't even give it the time of day, because you know Nostalgia Critic is an annoying, ignorant hack." But I just had to know, and I watched it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go wipe the filfth off... then prepare a response video, because I can't let this travesty stand.
I hate uploading videos from The Silver Case OST and finding related videos to fricking Minecraft and Flappy Birds. Like I give a crap.

Faucet handle stems that aren't marked...yes, I will be putting the famous Super Lube to use again, if only I can find out what stem to use (hope to find a ceramic valve cartridge replacement, probably will have to settle with another plastic direct replacement). Can't forget to look at the seat and spring too.

Sidewalks in disrepair. Happily moving along, enjoying the fine weather, and then ran over a rather large gap that I didn't notice [about the size and depth of my hand]. Got launched forward and said goodbye to my front teeth!
luckily, we live in the future where you can get that shit fixed easily -- have a dental appointment tomorrow
But it's still annoying. I look like I lost a fight.
