Midlife crisis
What a couple of recent threads appear to be about at heart.
I didn't expect it to seem fair, but the irony is, my memories of teenage years are not very fond so it comes as one rude awakening.
Is it true that at ~35 it's the worst and at ~40 it all but wanes?

Or to do myself justice, my fond memories of youth are not many.
Jurassic Park wasn't even the worst of it, but pretty low point all the same. I'm glad beyond words Hobbit the movie came out good.

Re: Midlife crisis
Nah the worst is in your 20s, which also happens to be the best. Someone ought to write a book. Oh, right. Proust. Damnable Frenchman... Sort of what I imagine Ed would write if he were part of a dying aristocracy and wrote a novel.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Is it true that at ~35 it's the worst and at ~40 it all but wanes?

Better memories of twenties than teens here (ever since ~13 I've been recovering slowly).

Re: Midlife crisis
For me, I found that comparing yourself to others is the fuel of depression. So wake up in the morning and view the world with different eyes.

Re: Midlife crisis
An individual need not fear failing at his/her chosen game. The definition of 'success' is something that must be determined on an individual, case-by-case basis. If one cannot redefine success on his/her own terms, then s/he has lost at the only game that matters.

Unlocked a vehicle called "Monster Truck" in Excite Truck this evening. Some things hold up like that.

Eh, what?Obiwanshinobi wrote:I'm glad beyond words Hobbit the movie came out good.
I just turned 38 a couple of days ago. I got out and did things much more in my teens and twenties but overall I prefer my more settled life now. I'm not really looking forward to my 40s but I assume it is just going to be a continuation of my 30s. That probably describes what my 50s and 60s will be pretty well too until I retire one day and get to relax even more. I suppose it depends on what you want out of life compared to what you are actually getting. For me I really don't want anything other than a relaxed family life. I had my fill of being a dumb fuck when I was young. No mid-life crisis for me but I do have a much greater sense of my own mortality.
Great advice.Moniker wrote:An individual need not fear failing at his/her chosen game. The definition of 'success' is something that must be determined on an individual, case-by-case basis. If one cannot redefine success on his/her own terms, then s/he has lost at the only game that matters.

The book was one of the first pictureless books I'd read and the flick did not mangle the source material. Kids need something that is not Jurassic Park or The Matrix still.Octopod wrote:Eh, what?Obiwanshinobi wrote:I'm glad beyond words Hobbit the movie came out good.

Re: Midlife crisis
Eh, at 41 and a confirmed bachelor, I can say things are not so bad. Ups and downs, lots of weird morbid thoughts, but basically I can afford to do what I want to do, and not do what I don't want to do. Mind you, all the big highs and lows are gone (don't expect to get the same rush or 'crush' out of anything), but I'm more patent, enjoy hobbies that take a long time to mature, and can have huge bouts of nostalgia without guilt. The funny thing is, when videos from the 70's and 80's turn up, I keep wondering what the hell's worth being nostalgic over. If you can manage not to be too heart broken over the end of your hormone driven youth, middle age is probably the best time of your life.

The middle class?Moniker wrote:Sort of what I imagine Ed would write if he were part of a dying aristocracy and wrote a novel.

I'm not a big fan of trying to compare life periods. I certainly know more than I did in my teens (including about practical things!) but at the same time I do have new problems to deal with. Couldn't do much about it without hindsight. I'm just trying to remain focused on the future.
BTW, I wouldn't say that Moniker's LGBT thread is about a midlife crisis at all...that's a reality throughout all of one's years, if not a 24/7 issue.

I rather thought of videogaming threads where some people admitted good games keep being made; it's just seasoned gamers who are not so easily pleased anymore.
So I wanted to share the experience, considering what kind of place is here.

Being old is about something else - it's when you are dependant on others, not unlike a child. Midlife crisis occurs when you are still supposed to take care of the others.

Re: Midlife crisis
Well America is due a great depression any time soon. Its living on debt, exports little and the $ is forecast to take a nose dive by 2015. Even Germany is moving its gold out of New York and back to Germany.
So add that to your mid life crisis woes.

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I'm very happy with my life. I have a beautiful wife and daughter, and so much free time that I can post on a video game forum.

Re: Midlife crisis
I don't know if I have had crisis in mid life? some stereotypes I fit in? but I am well with life today...
I have recently divorced.. since last year, I've gained full custody of my children, I've bought another car for recreation, I've found time to enjoy playing some games, I've made purchases of games I've been wanting - building my Dreamcast collection and near completing my full USA set of Turbo Grafx 16 games!
but in the recent years, I have become extremely reclusive.. my time is spent at work, tending to my children, and enjoying playing video game... I can't be bothered with social activity.. I have excessive animosity to crowds... I have pretty much stopped the drinking of alcoholic beverages, I find many things insufferable when it comes to people, how they lack humility, brag about their lives, their children's achievements and accolades, and their significant others.... I don't wish to ever be married ever again, and I won't bother with relationships because women of my generation are selfish, needy, entitled, and have expectations that be met for relationship success... I haven't time for that as my children are priority and the limited time I have to put in a relationship is unsatisfactory by womens standards and expectations...
am I in crisis? I feel I am at peace with my life and my family...

I've heard it said that the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. Love and Hate are passion put through either a positive or negative filter. Which is why huge shmup fans hate Euroshmups with a passion while regular gamerz can't see the difference.Sonic R wrote:I don't know if I have had crisis in mid life? some stereotypes I fit in? but I am well with life today...

The standard divorce system is terrible. Even if a couple starts out splitting amicably, bring on the lawyers and a court system that's barely removed from two knights fighting it out on the tournament field, and that couple can't help but see their fading love turn into seething hate.
I'd say your issue isn't a midlife crisis, it's unresolved anger issues with your ex, which you're projecting onto the entire female gender. This in turn is causing you to avoid situations where you risk getting involved with a woman again and facing the prospect of another heartbreak and divorce.
You know what's the leading cause of divorce worldwide? Marriage. If you get too horny to continue this hermitage, tell the women within the first 5 minutes of conversation that while you're interested in getting involved with her, marriage to you is not an option period. And don't bend when she tests your commitment to that principle. You'd be surprised how many women your age want exactly that. It's society, not biology, that tells them they must get married OR ELSE!

Re: Midlife crisis
alright this all sounds silly.
A mid-life crisis, is another persona invented to keep people from enjoying their lives. Why should you dress like this, or live like that. It is a word that lazy people, made up, who aren't having any fun with their job. It is like if you decided to take up something for greatness only to spend the rest of your life wishing you could do, something else instead. People eventually have no greatness so they call it a mid-life crisis.
Like recently their was this war, that interrupted my life, and with my teeth are falling out, and my eye is damaged from the sun, I am not going to give a darg about everybody else, and just do what I know. Is that a mid-life crisis. No. It is me getting back on that bycycle that is me.
You are recovering from the divorcee, and not living with a woman you call wife. Think about this way, she has freed you ( considering that she is the wrong doer and it is not legally separated ), and you can be like "Lone Wolf, with Cub", and enjoy the world.
You got work
You have kids
You have your health.
You have your home.
You have your property
I see 50+ year old guys taking pictures of themselves, showing how pugly their X wives were, partying on yachts, with age of consent women. I am not saying to be like that, I am saying, that it is your life, and however you want to live, is your destiny. She has freed you.
However you make it sound like you really miss your wife? Again that is your option, and your life.

I assume it was the extreme homophobic stance RegalSin took in the LGBT thread. That and the fact that s/he couldn't really put a sentence together. If it was the antigay views that got him banned (yeah, I'm assuming male, here), then I don't really approve of the banning. If, on the other hand, RS got banned because his prose was utterly dire, then I approve. Because it was. Although, as I've said elsewhere, there was a certain poetry to his ignorance.
