Top 10 Shmups of All Time List - What do you guys think?

Hey shmup fans! I've put together a 'Top 10 Shmups of All Time' article, please check it out and let meknow what you think! Also I'd love to hear your own Top 10 lists!

As I'm sure you would all know, narrowing it down to just 10 shmups is a difficult task and many awesome titles will be left out. Also I haven't played every shooter in existence (unfortunatley) so I'll miss a few great ones that way too. I tried to consider importance to the genre, gameplay and aesthetics, but also just ones I really like, so it's bound to be a bit of a personal list.

Lists like these rarely fail to provoke a cascade of silly consternation amongst some, but in any event you might have noticed that the forum recently held its annual Top 25 vote - feel free to compare your list with both previous years and the current one, once the votes are tallied.

The only one that strikes me as "nah, that definitely shouldn't be on there" is Super Aleste, but a lot of people do love that game.

I think MUSHA is underrated on this board, but I feel it's a great unique game.

I have no problem with the Treasure games being high on the list. They are some of the few games to break away from the traditional shmup mold, and the results are some great games.

I don't get the Silvergun love though, I fucking hate that game. I really have tried to like it, but I just can't.

Some of the games in the list are pretty good, they are only shit by comparison. It's like if you took Dodonpachi II and compared it against DOJ it's shitty, but if you compare it against everything else IGS has ever done it's a masterpiece. Shmups are relative.

I think the biggest nerdy gripe I have with the list is you put Donpachi and DDP together as if they were different versions of the same game. Then you posted a screenshot of DOJ.

I'm also confounded by the popularity of Radiant Silvergun among casual players of the genre.

Hard to fathom but I do like the series on some level. I was into the first few of the series when they first came out in the arcade. Nowadays if I was to play them for longer than a nostalgia fix it would feel like why am I wasting my time with this when I could be playing a Cave game. That isn't to say all Cave games are better than all other shmups. I definitely like Garegga over Deathsmiles. But in general I'd rather be playing Cave.

I think it depends a lot on what you are looking for in a shmup. I tend to think that non bullet hell games are more fun to play for survival, while Cave's stuff has more compelling scoring.

But then you also have Caladrius, which is awesome on both fronts, and it aint Cave...

Putting Radiant Silvergun on the first place surely gives a hint where you're coming from. And with this origin, it's difficult for us super hardcore shmuppers to take the rest of the list serious in any way. Maybe you want to post that list on the IGN or GameFAQs forums. Could be worth it.

I like your list; out of all the top shmup lists I've seen out there(not that there are a great many) Radiant Silvergun seems to be there the most. I could see the "hype" argument but from my perspective disagree with it. I hadn't read and read over hundreds of pages of praise for RS before I tried it out; in-fact initially I thought Ikaruga was superior....but the more and more I played RS the more and more I loved it.
And besides that I believe that when someone disagrees with what makes the top of the list there is this reactionary "discredit" syndrome...I think calling a game's popularity and appreciation "hype" would certainly fall into that category.

I liked your list and your basic reasons for why each game landed where it did. I would probably agree with a few people on here that Super Aleste is not quite in the same class- and although I love MUSHA I don't believe it ranks that high.

The top 25 list on this site is very interesting and deep...but I feel it suffers from a bit of modern Cave-lovers influx with a tad of "what's available on mame currently\recently" association....which is fully understandable....

Still the best shmup ranking list there is imo...
