Just finishing the Battle Royale manga now.

It's quite average actually. I especially don't like the script localisation, it's crap. Keith Griffin has gone way overboard with Anglicised/Americanised license, and it doesn't feel as though it matches the author's panels. It's irritating - but not as irritating as the crying. The crying. The endless blubbing. The crying when we're happy, crying when we're scared, crying when we're optimistic, crying while urinating. It's so Japanese, it's so utterly fail.

Other than that it's an ok read.

Just watched the first episode of Serial Experiments Lain out of curiosity and it was no joke, there's hardly any dialogue in this. Lots of scenery and staring. I don't know what's the appeal of this but I have no interest to keep watching.

Will check out Usagi Drop and Spice & Wolf next.

Picked up the Zvezda thing because the picture Trap15 posted made me curious. I don't like it, but I can't stop watching it either.

The first few episodes can feel quite barren indeed. IMO the pacing only picks up around episodes 4~6. But if the atmosphere isn't enough to please you then I doubt the philoso-technobabble dialogue will add much to the experience.

The whole ghost of the dead girl living it up in the internet was an excellent starting point. If only she and Lain actually became friends and went on internet adventures together possibly involving cults and crazy people and crazy people in cults. Or something.

In other news it's kind of interesting how this medium still manages to occasionally shock me after all this time. After all the incest, all the guro, all the gorn, all the gender-role flipping of haremus, I come face to face with saliva-fetish anime Mysterious Girlfriend X. Because it was there. And much like the protagonist of Yosuga no Sora, if it is a thing, I will watch it.

What the fuck, is my first reaction when multiple characters are totally ok with devouring one another's spit. How the fuck did this get made. Why the fuck was this made.

Then after a night's sleep it was like "Meh. I still don't think this is terribly hygienic." What's shocking one day is normative and boring the next. I guess kind of like Elvis and Miley Cyrus wiggling their basement parts around at people - That entire fucked up school could all lay on an endless staircase drooling down into one another like a fountain of human centipedes and I'd only be mildly perturbed by this point.

In retrospect I think this particular thing exists because it was really cheap to make. Like, they recycle the same backgrounds. A lot. It's always kind of "if they had the resources to make a show, why not make something good?" But "good" costs money. And certainly there has to be some freaks out there who love this kind of thing.
I quit when almost two entire volumes were comprised of nothing but comedic pirates. "Arghhh!"
The spunky witch girl who exists solely to be a deus ex machina machine somehow annoys me the most. Situations where realistically everyone who isn't Guts should die, but don't, because she knows meteo or some other nonsense. The cursed plate mail made by cursed dwarves that turn you into a cursed sociopath that has zero consequences attached to it.

The whole gathering the crew of frisky nakama, because that's what the other cool kids are doing in their mangas... it's clear there's no plan forward in place. It's as lost as Lost.

It's not unusual; you've got to be interesting up front to catch people's attention, but since so few things ever end up being successful, few people really think deeply about the long tail. Kirkman and Invincible are pretty remarkable for keeping the carecat alive over 100 issues, in retrospect.

Also rolling Zvezda. Tame shows are my thing. Bonus points for the Summon Night 5 style and the unpredictability. My only qualm is with the constant narrating; I don't need a character to go "WHOA IT'S A TREE" following the dumb tree's 10-second entrance. Also, the MC keeps getting worse after each episode.

Space Dandy is nice. The fanservice and humor are extremely mediocre, but I like space.

Finally, Nisekoi. It's a compilation of every cliche known to man and every last one of its fans is full-on autistic, but fuck it, I like the quick pace, the VAs and the reaction faces.

Natasha ftw, science girls master race.

Also following Tonari no Seki-kun this season. Listening to the only character they could afford a VA for talk and squeek for five minutes straigh can be annnoying, but Seki's contraptions and the short episodes make up for it.

So it's basically shaft shafting everything? Honestly, I totally hated liking Sasami@san, so I might give Nisekoi a try.

Oh man. I was all excited when I heard of the new LOGH, but those designs....damn. One of the reasons I so love the original LOGH is that the character designs are fairly realistic, they don't have huge anime eyes and :sweatdrops: and all that shit.

That's even fucking worse than I imagined. Goddammit! What the fuck is wrong with people. I'm so tired of fucking kids! That's my main complaint with modern manga and anime at this point: everyone is a goddamn kid. I'm fine with youth and young adults, but 14 year old characters rule the entire market. It would seem the target demographic is marketed towards the age depicted, but even more violent shows and comics all star children as well. I want some manly men and some womanly women, dammit!

I've been in this mindset for the last decade.

Honestly though, you're a madman if you don't go back to Vinland Saga. These little reprieves are what we live for.

I thought that LOTGH image was sort of kooky fan drawing, but a reboot? Urgh. LOTGH has such wonderful character design anyway. Also does a show that's essentially 110 episodes of solid heavy dialogue really require a yoof orientated redesign? I mean I've heard people say that LOTGH is too austere and po faced and inpenetratable, but I find it wonderful that something like it was even made in the first place...

Anime I really liked:

Fairy Tail: By far my fav one, main characters are incredibly well done, with their own spirit and different, yet
Rebord: Even though the start is very slow, nothing much happening, getting past I think the 50th episode, only great stuff. The manga continued after the 8th Arc, but the anime stopped sadly :(
Yugioh-5D's: Yes Really! Main characters are once again pretty cool, and the last Arc had one of the best story I ever saw.
Sonic X: Cause yeah, I'm still a big child in my head, but I really loved this serie. The end is pretty touching.

PS: Also, in the Yugioh GX serie, since it was sponsored by Konami, one of the bad guy has a Gradius Deck (with freaking Vic Viper and such).

That LoGH pic is fan art from like 2010, new designs haven't been released yet.
And it's not a remake.

Yeah, I read this article as well where the producer says "the new anime is not a remake of the earlier anime, but another anime adaptation of the original novels with a new staff."

That sure sounds a lot like a remake, if not technically because it's not based on the previous anime, then in practice at least. If the same source material is used for both works, then of course the end results will be similar as well story-wise. They can't change things around too much, otherwise it's no longer an adaptation of the original novels.

Don't fret, I'm sure what ever they actually do produce will still be just as shit.
I mean the few digitally re-drawn scenes in LOTGH were fairly ass enough already, imagine it all done like that topped off with modern Japanese sensibilities! can't fucking wait

I really enjoyed Code Geass Season 1 (I havent seen 2 yet) from start to finish, the whole intricate (but of course ridiculous really) combat tactics thing I found non stop entertaing and tense. I think youi've watched Valvrave, well you knoe the actual good bits with El or wotever teh f his name is, when he does these really detailed plans of attack? - Code Geass is like that non stop - and the dub is actually very good too.

S2 sucks, it's slightly above SEED Destiny quality. Nice mecha designs, but characters suck ass. Kingdom Hearts 2 bad.
First season I would say ranges from ok to good.
Best thing is the character designer's way of making angry faces, they look really pissed off.

Hey it could always be worse. It could always be the live action hollywood version. Like the things they're doing to Akira. And Ghost in the Shell. It's always lovely when the director outright disparages the source material, amirite? Think how much better The Princess Bride would have been if it hadn't merely been an almost line-for-line transcription of its book. There could have been time travel. And robot dinosaurs. And Ernie Hudson dressed up as an alien that knows martial arts.
That’s part of the Japanese culture, they never have strong characters.
... yeah.

Here's some mandatory concept art of Jackson as L.

Recently finished three series:

Psycho Pass
Science fiction dystopia about a future society where crime is prevented by 'Hue' checks that evaluate a person's criminal intent. People are given roles in society by the system that makes these evaluations. The protagonists are detectives who enforce this system by hunting down people who have a high 'Criminal Coefficient.' They encounter an individual who cannot be evaluated by the system, and have to figure out how to bring him to justice while questioning the authority of the supposedly infallible system around which their entire society is based.

Overall a really interesting premise that is fairly well explored. The animation quality is mostly very good (Production IG), and the plotline is pretty solid. I personally really enjoyed the series; however, I noticed that I didn't really get as invested in the characters as I probably 'should' have. At some points something tragic would happen, and I would think, 'oh, I should feel bad for this person right now... but I don't feel that bad.' The world-building in the series is excellent.

Shingeki no Kyojin (AKA Attack on Titan)
I can understand why people went apeshit over this. I didn't find it to be amazing, but it was solidly good. I can't really think of anything that I expressly disliked about it. Really well-constructed setting and concept, and the animation style is pretty unique.

That said, I'm not sure what to think of the
Spoiler
human-titan transformation
thing. I feel like it's a compelling enough premise and world without that. I haven't yet read the manga though, so there's quite a bit of the story that I don't yet know about. It's very possible that something awesome will happen that will change my opinion on this.

Canaan
Watched it totally on a whim based on a recommendation from a friend. It's short, relatively simple (as far as anime goes), and pretty well put together. Nothing amazing, but fun.
