So at the computer science club at my uni, we had a new person turn up, and we gave her a tour of the place and what we did. One of my classmates was attempting to explain League of Legends, and she was watching a bit curiously.

Then I (I was sitting next to said classmate) fired up RayForce and she immediately got excited and started watching my screen intently. Apparently it was the simplicity and nostalgia factor that drew her interest.

The first game I seriously played with my then girlfriend/now wife was Gunstar Heroes. I was getting bored with the game but she wouldn't let me quit until we beat the game. The first time I ever cleared it was with her

Aww. :3

A great co-op action game, that. Had some good times on it with distantly game-acquainted friends who'd enjoy watching me play Metal Slugs, Contras etc but found them too punishing. Gunstar's cute, hyperactively destructive, and Normal lets newbies shrug off just the right amount of mistakes while tearing through baddies.

A friend of mine was desperate to get his girlfriend into gaming, but no matter what games he showed her, she never got interested in anything. I asked him what games he showed her, and he told me: Demon's Souls, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, Naruto...

I'm like: "Man, you need to show her games that girls might like. Expecting her to enjoy Demon's Souls is like expecting you to enjoy Barbie".

Next time they came over, I told her I wanted to show her one game. If she didn't like it, she was free to stop playing anytime. She agreed.

I showed her Peggle. She got instantly hooked. My friend was baffled.

Know your audience, people.

PS: You can't force anyone to enjoy gaming, but I'd bet there's always one game out there that will catch people's attention, even non-gamers.
