I have lots of free time now so getting into only one genre is out of question. Besides, if I played shmups only I'd become crazy. Too much action per minute = overload. Yeah, I'm not hardcore enough.

That's why I spend a "gaming" afternoon reading VNs and then playing 2 or 3 credits every 2 hours or so. Though I must recognize that DOTA is addictive when I decide to play it = no other stuff that day.

I've got a big enough collection that I don't have to limit myself to just shmups. I spread the love around to other genres, though mainly old school.

In the weeks since alamone's shmupmeet I've actually played almost no shmups--a run of Hellsinker and very few other things. Most of my play time lately has been devoted to Monster Hunter.

Stellavanity is a shooting game that requires 6 buttons by default, but if you reeaaaally wanted to you could have an 8-button layout. Even fighting games almost never use >6 buttons. ;)

Yeah it's basically just the more modern games I can't immediately play that put me off. I tried to play one of the newer metal gear games recently (can't remember which) and gave up after it expected me to learn dozens of button combinations for crawling and rolling and shit. No thanks, just show me where the fire button is.

I recall my roommate watching me play Metal Gear Solid 2 and becoming interested. He tried it while I was out. He still thinks I'm a genius to this day. :P

Couldn't possibly do that. It'd be like me choosing one gaming platform a gen. Can't do it. I dabble in everything (except sports and simulators).

I used to live for fighters back in the mid 90's especially capcom and SNK,even though I have a fair collection of stuff from all genres,I barely play anything that isn't a shmup these days.I try,but I just have the patience or interest in anything else, even fighters.

I like to play pretty much anything that isn't COD or a sports game, although I've been playing shmups more than anything else due to time constraints; I've been really into DOTA 2 lately, which kind of conflicts with my scheduling :P

A cool idea though, a two games in one kinda package, where you can choose to play every level as a shmup or flight/combat sim. And bla bla bla to make it interesting.

For the most part, I play shmups exclusively. It's a combination of having shit to do and not being overly interested in other genres. I also get annoyed when I have to sit for 20 minutes before I can play, just so the game can set up the storyline. If I wanted a damn story, I'd read a book! And if I had a couple hours free, I'd rather make/listen to some music.

Good lord no.

I'm a gamer. Shmups just happens to be one of my favorite genres.

love many game genres and have spent LOTS of time on them (particularly RTS and FPS),
but I've also found it very difficult to enjoy most new games in the past few years... so I mostly play to get better @ some of my "old" favorites.

Do you think that the reason you don't enjoy the newer games is because you have become more jaded? I think that is the case with myself. There are many titles out there today that would have excited me twenty years ago, that can no longer create that level of excitement in me anymore. I still have nostalgic ties to the 16-bit era. I appreciate those games more, not based on merit but nostalgic value. Shmups are the one genre that still creates some of that excitement for me. I've been kicking around the idea of leaving an arcade stick hooked up to my Xbox 360 and PC and exclusively playing shmups. It would be cheaper to do that (less game purchases), and I would be able to get good enough at shmups to get on the forum leaderboards.

yeah might be
but I think it's true there are still lots of good games around to try... just reluctant to even bother anymore after being disappointed so many times. Love Minecraft though !

Ah crap...

There was a summer I was doing an internship away from home and living in a place with no internet and pretty much just my laptop for entertainment. I intentionally only had shmups installed before I left. I play videogames to sublimate my hunting instinct in these modern times, but fall prey to that "Quarter to Three" phenomenon all the time. Limiting my collection to Shmups exclusively seemed the best solution.

I got SO MUCH done! At first I was frustrated and bored as all hell because I physically could not sink 8 hours into the shmups, even though I had 24 of them. But eventually I got over my withdrawl and started new things. Lots of new things. I even wrote half a novel that's still sitting half-finished on a backup CD.

Then the internship ended and I came back home and reinstalled 4Xs and RPGs and all the other timesuck games and I've never been as productive since.

Damn... maybe this thread is a wake up call.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"
