I say that to myself, while I am browsing my fiction section, thinking this sometimes.

If I never knew or understand how free, and a bit more wealthier our worl would have been. Japan, would just be considered another China, and I would probably be wearing a cross around my neck, doing brain surgery for a living.
So that is what happened to you? You performed brain surgery on yourself?

Probably could build some nice connections that way too. Did any of that fansubbing come back to help / haunt you years later?

Not so much, but a handful of guys in games forums recognized the group name and had subsequently see. My stuff.

FWIW, Todd of Central Anime still subtitles, and still gets his initial timing from the method above on an Amiga. He then moves it over and tweaks it in a digital format.

Analogue music/photography, being in that illustrious group known as "the first dorks on the internet", living in Japan, and of course games. Who knows, it might happen. ;)
I'm looking forward to it. I understand that gaming is not a major part of your life now and you have more important things to do in life, but still, it might be a good idea for your later part of life. Did you read Niall Murtaghs "The blue-eyed Salaryman"? I would love to see you doing a similar thing. Shou might be the better insider but what he is lacking is your dark sense of humor, which I highly enjoy (This is not meant as an insult to Shou, but I think he is intelligent enough to understand what I mean). I can't compliment you enough for your art of writing. I really love it. And you certainly lived and experienced enough to fill a good book.

Also, thank you very much for your little excursus into the world of anime subbing. Like I said, there is tons of knowledge and interesting stories that will get lost in the sea of threads.

Yeah, I remember that thread very well but it wasn't enough to satisfy hunger. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is highly interested in GPs life. I always wanted to make this thread but I was afraid I might look like a stalker. >_>

ah yes, back when anime used to be worth a damn. Very cool hearing about how it went down back in the day. I remember the first blank VHS tapes I sent off to some fan-subber for the Gundam Z series. I was completely blown away by the image quality, and now I know why

Every time I see straight guys say "no homo" it makes it look really homo. Not quite as homo as 'pro' wrestling, but it's up there. Get a room you fanboys. :V

So true, the same way as saying "No offense, but ... SOMETHING SUPER OFFENSIVE"

Have we discussed the choice of David Cross as his avatar?

Is it Adam from Mr. Show?

http://youtu.be/wmNApZRy3wk

Or maybe Pizza Boy from Tim and Eric?

http://youtu.be/Kgtxf_1aKi8

Or perhaps Dr. Tobias Fünke from Arrested Development?

Pile in a completely useless spoiler tag for that special "I'm making people work! On the internet! Go me!" power tripping feel.

Spoiler tags, rue the day.

In San Francisco's Japantown Mall, there was a Japan Video store that sold some cool anime LDs but quite pricey back in the late '80s and into the early 1990s. The defunct Mikado toy store sold some cool anime VHS alongside with plenty of Gundam model kits (not to mention it was still possible to buy the original Bandai produced Super Dimensional Fortress Macross VF toys for a mere $66.00 USD each in April of 1991). Those were the days of early anime fandom. In March of 1991, Mikado Toys had gotten in a brand new Super Famicom gaming console and charged the public a mere $2 per 15 minutes to try it out...of course, the SFC Super Mario World game was up and running as usual. This preceded the official U.S. Super Nintendo console launch by a mere two month as April 1991 would roll along with many SNES demo kiosks installed in speciality gaming shops like Software Etc and the like.

There was a Cartoon Fanasty Organization Stockton/Modesto, CA chapter that met once a month to get the latest Japanese anime VHS tape (from the bigger Los Angeles-based CFO chapter club) and the whole local club would get together and hook up their VHS decks and record away. This was back in April of 1988, folks. It was the first time I had watched the entire Dagger of Kamui anime film in Japanese (and the following trailer shown afterwards) and caught a bit of the stellar conclusion of the Crusher Joe movie. So yeah, it was cool to watch anime durng those early days of underground anime lore in the U.S.

There's a handful I posted in the thread where Skykid was branded a normalfag and the rest of the forum laughed their balls off. I guess I'm just too old to get it.
