I'm going to vote for ThunderForce IV- mostly for the actual design of the enemies, sound effets/music I also love the level stucture alot more.

but then I dont have any nostalgia for either title since I only played III and IV via emulation maybe two years ago.

Never really played it, but I know it's on: Sharp X-1, NEC PC-88, NEC PC-6001, Sharp MZ-1500, and Fuji FM-7.

Thunder Force II has better horizontal levels than III, but those overhead levels fuck it up. From the short amount of time I spent with IV, I honestly didn't like it. Something to do with that crazy range of scrolling from top to bottom, I've never seen anything like it any other hori shmup. I really need to take the time to beat it, though. Those graphics are freakin' insane, though.

Thunder Force III wins. Just cos it's easy doesn't mean it's the worst.
