NEC XM-2950 issue (power supply?) and Megaview 42 Pro questi

Post by shlora »

Hi. I've been lurking here for a while but I thought I should ask before I abandon this glorious machine. I have an one of these monitors that worked magnificently until recently it began to power itself off while running.

Eventually when I would turn it on, I would get a display for about 5 seconds before it would go into stand by mode with a blinking light.

At this point I opened it up and removed any and all dust that I could and looked for loose connections or blown fuses, but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

Now when I power the monitor on I get no display. It goes directly into stand by mode. Oh what a pity. If anyone has any recommendation, I would do anything to resurrect this baby.

Now I use a mitsubishi megaview 42 Pro which almost killed several innocents while we lugged the beast into our apartment. The sheer girth of the thing is mindblowing and the screen is extremely tubular. Unfortunately the fan(s?) emits a constant whine and whirr which I'm getting used to but it's just not the same as the xm29 man...

My question is, is there any way to reduce the volts to the fan without it overheating, or any suggestions? Much appreciated, I consider myself lucky to ever have owned these machines! Better to have loved and lost...

Does the XM29 fan power up and spin when you turn it on or not?

I believe it will turn itself off if there is something gone awry with the fan.

Yes, I believe you are correct, but the fan still spins.

Are you running any other types of devices through the signal before it goes into your XM29?

Only because I recently had a similar problem where the monitor would display an RGB image, then after a small length of time the picture would literally "pop" and the monitor would shut itself off, followed by the light on the front of the unit to blink red (and not amber like you see on standby or green when the unit is on). Fan was working for me as well, so I knew it wasn't that. What I didn't realize right away was that the Extron sync processor I use was having a power supply problem which caused the XM to act up and shut down. Even when I didn't have any consoles on, the usual all black screen that you would be greeted to would oddly flicker when I just turned the monitor on.

Maybe try some different configurations and see if you might be able to isolate the problem, as that's what I did until I realized what the culprit was.

I also had a Megaview in the past, it's a nice monitor but man that thing was LOUD. Wish I could help you there.
