Famicom AV mod tutorial link?

Post by Jeppen »

Hi

I've been searching the web, but can't really find a very clear and useful tutorial on how to AV mod your original Famicom (this particular one is from 1984 if it makes a difference)
Does anyone know of a good one?

Or if there's a way to display Japanese RF in a european PAL TV, that would be great too!

Cheers!

Could this work as a work around?

RF out to this..

..then via appropriate cables into this..

Then into a PAL TV

?
Please tell me this would work :)

I would just go for an AV mod as opposed to some workaround solution using a VCR. I've used this particular circuit and it's never failed me:

You'll want to lift pin 21 on the PPU and it also helps to add copper tape shielding on the PPU in order to reduce jailbars. For the latter, you'll have to desolder the PPU, wrap a strip of copper tape around it, and then solder a wire from the tape to ground.

Thanks that circuit looks really clean and nice and coming from you i know it's a good one, definitely an option.
Though the Famicom in question is has been in my friend's family since it was purchased in Japan 1984 and in really nice condition so i would really prefer not to open it up and mess around.

Do you think in theory that my second post could work?
Don't really want to buy a huge clunky VCR just as an RF signal converter.

That adapter cable you linked to will not work, the male end isn't an RCA connector and you can't separate an RF signal into individual video and audio signals without some sort of converter box. You'll either have to use a VCR or tuner box as a workaround or mod the system.

Ah yes it was an antenna cable i think, my bad.

How about this:

From Famicom RF RCA jack (it is RCA right?)

...with this...

...to this...

(Yes only mono is used of course)

...to this...

And then out to the TV via a scart adapter or whatever will fit.

Would that work you think?

That's BNC at the other end, you want an RCA to coax cable.
