help remembering a RPG I played as a kid
help remembering a RPG I played as a kid
I know, theres a billion of these threads but here it goes, when I was a kid I would play crash bandicoot at my friends house. One day I played a RPG and I think it was on PS1 or dreamcast and I want to know the name. It began with a character in a small town and when you left the town a cutscene would reveal these flower looking things IIRC that you had to battle; also, the graphics where 3d overhead not 2d overhead like a lot of rpgs and it didn't have any very bright colors at least in the beginning. I'm going through lists right now but any help to save me time would be appreciated.

Were the battles turn-based or real-time? Did you see the enemies before battle began, or got the characters suddenly drawn in environment looking different from the area they explored? Were the environments and characters alike poylgonal, or sprites in polygonal world (like Xenogears and Breath of Fire III)?
Orthodox jRPGs (like Suikoden or Final Fantasy) in full 3D weren't all that plentiful on PSX. Legend of Legaia springs to mind and that's it (The Granstream Saga wasn't very orthodox).

The name caught my attention because Yasunori Mitsuda worked on the sequel's music. So I thought it would be interesting to start from the scratch.

Re: help remembering a RPG I played as a kid
Ever since I got into the Shining Forcce series (starting with StHA & SF3 for Sega Saturn, then eventually the Genesis, Game Gear & Sega CD games), I've had a really hard time playing other RPGs & especially SRPGs. Cause the SF games (the SRPGs in particular) made the battles so much fun & were actually the highlight of the games unlike most other RPGs where the battles are only filler for story & graphics. Not to say that the SF series had bad stories, as StHA & SF3 on the Saturn also has what I consider like the best RPG stories that also kept me glued to the game in combination with very fun gameplay. Such perfect games.
So yay, it's like I'm cursed now. As most RPGs I start I never manage to finish. And other SRPGs I try I absolutely freakin hate (ie. FFT is a broken & overly complicated mess + with other BS attached). Like only the SF series got it right? It's really weird, but yeah, it sure sucks. Luckly the SF games are highly replayable too, something most RPGs lack. When I played SF3, I played it for 10 months every day & all day. And when I was at the gym, like the threamill part of the routine in particular, all I could think of was that game. Never been that hooked to a game before & since... it's all downhill from now on...

You need to play Shin MegaTen: Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga 1&2, as well as Chrono Trigger.

Their are tons of great original breath taken RPG's but so little time.
Legend of Legia was a great game, I love the dimensions, the views, and original enemy design, the second game to that is rather bland, as I remember. I own the original and the US port of the second game. LOL has all kinds of fun little tid-bits, from the begining, when you under the seige of giant ants to old-men stuck with their heads inside of fishes. Has lots of flashy graphics.
Remember the extra adorable, Rollies, from Chrono Trigger? The ones in LOL, are super bad-arse looking. They still have the same design but are bad-arse looking.

The PS2 sequel was decent. It did a good job of refining the enjoyable battle system of the first game, but the characters, plot and locations were rather bland.Khan wrote:Great game, had so much fun playing this back in the day there was also a sequel but i never did get to try that out.
