1CC novice

Post by gigetto »

Hello,

As I will be turning 40 this year I've decided to set myself various goals to achieve.
One of them is to 1CC a shoot'em up.
Which one would you suggest I should start with?
Thanks.

Regards,

I'd suggest mushihimesama futari's original mode.
It's simple and clean, enough difficulty to keep beginner on his toes but not too easy to clear.

NOT Dodonpachi Saidaioujou. I wanted to make it my first 1cc but I'm stuck on stage 4 on novice. :(

Play Death Smiles MBL with Sakura, or Death Smiles Vanilla with Rose. Those are quite easy. As a 'noob' they took me just a few days (easily less than 10 hours) of concentrated practice. It's a fun game, too.

For a more gradual challenge, you could try working your way up in Ketsui Death Label. The 'very easy' course should be manageable even for a compete beginner. It does get really brutal in higher difficulties, though.

Hi,

thanks for the various suggestions. Yes, I should have looked at other posts too before asking.
After a bit of reading the other posts and looking at videos I have so far shortlisted the following 3 games to start my 1CC adventure:

Winds of Thunder
Blazing Lazers
Thunder Force III

What do you think?
I'll be playing them emulated on PC and using an xbox360 controller, is it a valid set up?

Thanks.

Really, it comes down to comfort. If this option suits you, go ahead. There are top class players here using keyboards (prometheus), pads (gus) as well as arcade sticks.

I highly recommend Thunder Force III. It's one of my favorite games.

Don't play a game just because it's easy to 1cc, especially if it's an older memo based game. Just pick a game you enjoy playing and stick with it and you'll eventually clear it.

That is, unless you're mostly interested in older memo games. Just know that a 1cc on Thunder Force 3 isn't going to teach you anything at all that will help you with, say, DOJ.

i highly recommend dodonpachi daioujou black label. it's the kind of game you could play to start this genre, and it's the kind of game you could play for a good chunk of your life.

You can clear anything if you love it enough. You should lose your 1cc virginity to a game you really love, not to some cheap and easy whore like Deathsmiles IIX.

But older games aren't necessarily memo based. Some of them encourage far, far, far less rote memorization than any Cave shooter. Not to mention that how many RNG/reaction based elements exist in any game is completely up to the developer and varies from game to game and developer to developer.

Well yeah. I didn't mean to suggest that all older games were memo based, but Thunder Force 3 is basically nothing but haha.

Are the PC and emulators your only option here or do you have consoles too?
Oniros wrote:NOT Dodonpachi Saidaioujou. I wanted to make it my first 1cc but I'm stuck on stage 4 on novice. :(
Heh that's one I was thinking of suggesting, cause it's easier than the usual games without necessarily being a cakewalk. The challenge that's there will make it all the more satisfying once you do clear it, just keep at it.

As for other suggestions I have no clue cause I'm not one to ask about 1CCs. I think SDOJ Novice (not Novice-Expert btw) might've been my first and got it pretty quickly...but otherwise my only others were Ketsui and Espgaluda a few weeks back, and I've been working on and off with those for near a decade now.

For Bullet Hell, my personal recommendations would be:

Any Touhou on normal or easy
Older Cave games (Dodonpachi, Esp Ra.De)
most Doujin shmups (about the same as the above most of the time)
Jamestown
Anything on Steam, basically

For classic/traditional:

Axelay
Gradius III (SNES version, arcade version is a nightmare)
Lifeforce
Thunderforce 3 or 4

A couple of obvious suggestions and ones that have already been mentioned but are good choices:

Thunder force 3 - bit of memo but its very generous with 1-ups & it's fun.
Deathsmiles - choose your difficulty, fairly generous with life-ups & it's fun

Thank you very much for all your suggestions. Too many options!
I was thinking of starting with a traditional game as bullet hell games scare me a bit.

As for using a PC/Emulator. It is just because I chose those games and I don't have a Genesis here and never had a PCEngine or Turbo Duo.
I have almost all the consoles ever released in Europe but I do not have access to the old ones (8bit and 16bit) as I left them in Italy. Here in the UK I have all the others (all the handhelds and all the consoles from the N64 onward).

The easiest ones to access (ie, not kept in the cellar) are the handheld ones, 360, ps3 and ps4. Any suggestion on those is welcome, but I am happy to play on PC too.

oh, there are lots of good choices among old games too. i recommend exed exes, as it's probably the best "xevious-like" game. if that's a bit too old, i'd recommend hishouzame, easily one of toaplan's better games.

As someone is who at the wrong of his 40's and been playing shmups poorly for years, I really have to recommend Mushi Futari on the 360. Dear Lord it is a beautiful game. 1.5 original mode is the one to go for initially. Arrange mode is lovely (and you WILL 1CC it in novice mode) but you need to ease yourself in before trying the other modes as they are SO nuts you won't know what you are doing and I don't find that enjoyable - lots of good info at this forum on the game though - so you will be able to figure it all out (it is a japanese game but is region free and has quite a bit of English on the menus etc.)

It is a deeply satisfying game and has a good practice mode too. I got a 360 at Christmas with Futari and I've got to the level 3 boss a few times on 1credit. I'm not playing every day - most days though - maybe 4 or 5 credits a session and my high score is 54m so far. It is a 5 level game but mid-way through level 3 it really cranks up. But - the practice mode is there and the whole 2 shot / gem mechanic is incredibly compulsive. It's a mad looking shmup that is actually approachable - an incredible achievement by Cave. There are other really interesting modes - mad enough so I know I will never beat them all - but I like to know it will always have a challenge for me. There's the Black Label mode as DLC too. I can't recommend this game enough.

i haven't 1CC'd much - Super ALeste and Super SWIV (aka Firepower 2000) on SNES and , I have 1CC'd Raiden III on PS2 - but at the lowest but one difficulty level.

Gunbird 2 is excellent too - I have 1CC'd that at the lowest level. I play the Dreamcast version of that with it's arcade stick and it's a lovely game. If you can find shmups that can be tamed using difficulty levels that can take a lot of the frustration away - I intend to work my way up the diffculty levels in Gunbird 2 - if I can ever 1 loop it on default I will be happy.

Many say DoDonPachi is a good one but I just don't get on with it. I have a level 3 bogey when it comes to trying to 1CC that game. I have the Saturn version that I play with a CRT in TATE mode. Lovely game and you might do better than me... The scoring can be very satisfying - I got so I could no miss the 1st 2 levels but just couldn't cope with level 3 and sadly gave up in frustration and it has left a bad taste in my mouth - I've got DDP Resurrection for my 360 too but I can't really get into it.

nthing Blue Rish Resurrection Plus. It has several tools to assist with a single-credit clear: autobomb (if you consider 1CC with autobomb legitimate; some say no), a lot of slowdown, a constant source of extends (every 5 million points), and very simple scoring.

Actually, round here, top-down arena shooters like Smash TV, Outzone or FixEight are often thought of as a shmup sub-genre. It looks like a cool game, I'd never heard of it before.

Mushihime-sama (not futari) original mode using S-power shot.

I'll go full retard and say it's the easiest Cave 1cc after Daifukkatsu 1.5 Bomb Style (but I don't like Daifukkatsu so play Mushihime-sama).

For some reason, Mushi allwas gets overshadowed by Futari even though it is a great game.

There seems to be a lot of varying opinion on what the easiest Cave clears are. Personally I don't find Mushi original all that easy, I've actually only cleared 1.5. That game gets really rough around stage 4. In comparison Futari Original is one endless string of bullet herding; a Hishouzame for the new age. It's definitely easier than Mushi 1, but I totally agree, I think Mushi 1 is the better and more interesting game, at least when it comes to survival.

Also I think DFK 1.5 Bomb is pretty fucking hard, even if it's not particularly hard by Cave standards.

That said the EASIEST Cave clears have to be SDOJ 360 shot and Deathsmiles IIX lvl1 no-bonus stage. Anyone could clear IIX, its not just one of the easiest Cave games, it's one of the easiest shmups I've ever played. Deathsmiles 1 is another contender if you can get past the moderately difficult final stage. I can't imagine anyone arguing that these aren't the easiest.

DFK 1.5 really is pretty easy by Cave standards thanks to Bombs and Hypers if you just want a 1-All... up to stage 5 that is. Stage 5 is such an enormous clusterfuck of a jump in difficulty cause of the laser wheels that it makes it harder than a lot of Cave games to 1-All in my opinion. Getting an 'easy' 1-All of DFK pretty much comes down to can you survive the laserwheels or not...
