STGWeekly competition/demo at a Fighting Game Tournament?

Post by Frenetic »

Hi guys,

So time for a new STGWeekly project. We've completed two panels at two anime conventions with a good response (the panels were approved!). As a side note we had a notable fighting game player come over to play Ketsui when we had a monitor/projector setup in the console gaming room.

I want to try to have something like Stunfest in America, where they combine fighting games and shmups...like Wasshoi/Tougeki. STGWeekly has some twitter followers that organize fighting game tournaments, so I'm thinking about approaching them but I want to have a coherent presentation before I go to them.

You guys who play shmups AND fighting games, how would you approach fighting game tournament organizers to allow a "shmup side show/side competition" I'm thinking about furnishing a cash prize or doing a cash pot (winner take all? pot split between 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?). Also, how would you entice fighting game players to give shmups a try? They can use their own stick/pad on an Xbox 360 setup, etc.

Thanks for all your help,

Live superplays, arcade cabinets, and competitions are all things that could be advertised by a TO. In my experience, some TOs love adding side events (i.e. Keits, last UFGT ballroom almost looked like a carnival on one side with minigames), others are so busy with the huge numbers of FGs being run nowdays (i.e. big E, I love his tournaments! if it's self managed he allows about any side tournament) to even worry about that stuff. Most TOs probably lie somewhere inbetween, and certainly any of them would be worth talking to IMO.

There's a non-surprising amount of incognito shmuppers, speedrunners, rhythmers, and general arcade heads in the FGC. I'm not sure how well some of those things would turn out, but it's definitely worth a try. Just like any community you have a lot of people who are close minded and a smaller amount of people who are actually open minded. Of that latter group surely some people would want to hop on and play some games, or at the very least watch.

edit: might be a good idea to try talking to a local TO running smaller monthlies or something to get an idea of how things would go depending on your experience, could give you some perspective on how to advertise such events to a TO running a bigger event
