howdy!

Post by eatdogs »

Hello all. I just joined up here on this forum. I was told about this place by a cool guy I met in Portland named Jesse. He works at this super awesome game store called video game wizards.

Anyway nice to meet you all. These past two years I've gotten back into retro game collecting, which actually seems to be really popular now for some reason. Shmups are some of my most sought after games. Some of my main focus has been on collecting all the shmups I can on the ps1. I just recently got several and all imports.

Zanac x zanac
Night raid
Two tenkaku
Raiden project
Philosoma
Wolf fang

I know wolf fang isn't really a shmup, but I like robot fighters like Metal Warriors and Cybernator on the snes and Target Earth on the genesis.

Anyone here have any hands on knowledge of this obscure shooter on the ps1 called Meta-Ph-List Gamma X 2297. Yeah, it's got a weird name. I've only seen a couple of screen shots of it and what I think might be idea cover art. I've heard it's a double disc game and is sort of like Radiant Silvergun.

Do yeah, hi, nice to meet you all and I look forward to getting to know everyone here!

Welcome.

If you're into PS1 shmups I highly recommend G-Darius and R-Type Delta.

Hey

Meta-Ph-List - if it suits your humour maybe - p.s. better forum etiquette not to ask the same question in two threads ... I'll answer in the dedicated thread :)

soukyugurentai and dodonpachi on ps1 though you'd probably be better off on saturn if you're getting one... appreciate that's kind of another topic...

Robot games:cybernator is the snes version of the leynos series - aka assualt suits valken - if your going to get/have a saturn then Leynos 2 on saturn is must for these types of games - especially for replay [it kind of allows you to replay with you upgraded equipment]. As is Front Mission Gun Hazard on the snes - incidentally you may like the front mission strategy games of which this is a spin off if you'd like a tactic game -> all about the series http://www.frontmission.info/

ex ranza (Jap) /Ranger X (western) is good on the megadrive. And there is a leynos game on megdrive too.

More shmup related I'd happily recommend psyvariar 2 on ps2 (also on xbox and dreamcast (original)) if you'd like something a bit unique with mecha ;) ... the prequel psyvariar is also great though less mecha related.

ps1 wise I'd quickly second To Far Away Times' recommendations above and add einhander [has great feel that will probably fit well with a like for things mecha].

... and the inevitable gundam battle assault 1 and 2 if your into 2d mecha fighters.

Thanks for the replies. I have several ps1 shmups already. Here's my list (no bragging).

Terra diver
Donpachi
Dodonpachi
Raystorm
Ray crisis
Strikers 1945
R type delta
Gekio shooting king
Thunder force 5
Gunners heaven
Gradius gaiden
G darius
Einhander

And I guess if I add the ones I mentioned already, then:
Zanac x zanac
Night raid
Two tenkaku
Raiden project
Philosoma
Wolf fang

So I guessed outta mostly come down to the imports. I'm not wanting them all though. I'm just interested in the one I mentioned plus a few more. Titles like

Sonic wings special
Wonder 3
Cotton
Darius gaiden
Gaia seed
Gunbird
Harmful park
X2

Just a word of warning.Gaia seed is average at best and is certainly not worth it's huge price tag! If you can get it cheap (under £50) then maybe it's worth getting if you're really interested in it.

Welcome. A few words concerning some of the titles you're interested in:
Wonder 3
This one is included on one of the "Capcom Collection" compilations on the PS2, so if you're non-insistent on proper resolutions and whatnot that might be a cheaper option (not to mention there are several other shmups and such in there).
Darius gaiden
IIRC this one tends to be easier and cheaper to get on the Saturn, especially seeing as it was localized on that system; it's also on the PS2 Taito Memories/Legends compilations.
Gaia seed
As Jonst said this one is quite pricey, but can be downloaded for a handful of dollars on the PS3 if you'd rather go that route.
Gunbird
If memory serves the PS1 version of this doesn't have vertical screen mode, so this one's generally recommended on the Saturn; there's another PS2 compilation featuring Gunbird and its sequel, though opinions are a bit mixed on it.
Harmful park
Also stupidly expensive, but a personal favorite, recommended if you like cute-em-ups; I THINK this one's also available as a PSN download, but only if you have a JP account and JP currency to spend, which is a bit of a hassle.
X2
This one's a "Euroshmup", so be prepared for some annoyances you don't usually see in Japanese-developed stuff.

Hope that's helpful in some fashion, enjoy your stay at the forum.

There was one more Mecha game In the latest comiket 85 trailer.
NYU media is also real easing armed 7, but it's a shmup with a Mecha.

Steel Strider is the new doujin one:
