iFBA - shmup on iOS!

Post by yoyofr »

Hello,

I have ported Final Burn Alpha on iOS, it's freely available on jailbroken device via Cydia. :D
Now I'm working on implementing specific hacks to allow 'follow finger' touch controls, similar to what Cave did for official iOS port of mushihime sama or espagaluda...
Here is a short video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBeml9n_D5w
new video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkfODP1xuEA

I'm looking for beta testers and feedback: what games would like to be covered (has to be emulated by FBA, compatibility is similar to mame).

Currently covered games:
- Cave: Donpachi, Dodonpachi, Fever SOS, Ketsui, Progear, Esp Ra.De., Esp Galuda
- Raizing: Battle Garegga, Battle Bakraid, Armed Police Batrider, Dimahoo
- Toaplan: Truxton 2, Dogyuun, Grind Stormer, Batsugun
- Psikyo: Strikers 1945, Gunbird, Gunbird 2, Dragon Blaze, Samurai Aces, Tengai

Want to beta test? Click here: http://tflig.ht/Hs3j9f

very cool, great work so far! when i have some time i'll have to dig out my old ipod touch and see if i can get this thing to run. also, where can people get the source for this? please be aware, you must make public any changes you make to the fba source or else you're in violation of the project's license.

please be aware that it requires rather fast device.

regarding the source code of my FBA port it's already available on github and I'm also already in contact with FBA current developers...

you seem to be interested by sourcecode, are you a developer, do you want to help ?

first of all thanks for your work!! i used ifba on my ipod touch 5g quite a lot. the emulation speed is very good and also it has scanline options :)
sadly it's not very stable, every second time i change the button mapping on my wiimote it crashes to the springboard and also very often during gameplay..

but since retroarch came out on ios i haven't used ifba anymore. it hasn't crashed a single time on me and you can use a ps3 controller for playing. the downside of it is that it doesn't have a scanline option and the developer said on a forum that he won't implement them as the gpu's of ios devices are too slow for scanline emulation, which sounds like a weird statement to me as ifba can show them and also all .emu apps from robert broglia have them.

so i guess what i really want to say is why don't you team up with the retroarch project and combine the best things of your emulators into one? would make more sense than everyone doing their own stuff :)

I did not know that retroarch was ported to iOS, that's great news.
I'll see if I can have my changes included, it will depend on retroarch developer interest.

iFBA should not be so instable, there is probably a bug I havent identified yet. I'll make v0.6 available soon, it is very stable on my iPhone (4s) & iPad 3 right now, both running on iOS 5.

whoops, i didn't realise these changes were part of the official ifba project and that you were its head maintainer. anyway, i wasn't trying to accuse you of anything, i just didn't see a link to the source or a project homepage anywhere in the info you posted and thought i'd ask about it. as i'm sure you're aware there are a lot of people out there violating the license of fba and similar projects, especially in the mobile device scenes.

anyway, i want to second the idea of looking into creating a libretro-fba core with these touch screen hacks in your project. retroarch supports both touch screen and mouse input, so a big plus is with minimal effort you'll also get mouse control for these games on PCs, and i bet there a lot of people here (me included) who would love to mess around with some of their favorite arcade shmups using mouse controls.

@antares: what the retroarch devs told you is true, this is because retroarch implements filters such as scanlines in a generic way (so it could be applied to any supported cores) as post processing shaders.

regarding retroarch-fba it should not be an issue to implement my hacks, but I won't have the time to do it myself, at least before
long...
updating iFBA is easy since I'm the (only) author of the iOS port, so I just have to update/hack my version and all my dev env is already set up and working.

I'm having a lot of trouble with testflight. Is there a deb or alternate install method?

Anyone try it on ios 7.0.4? I have trouble on iPad Mini Retina, iFBA runs once and then, after exit, wont start again. Only reinstall can help to run it once more...
