How can I Tate My 37 inch HDTV - UPDATE: Final setup pics
So I'm buying a new HDTV tomorrow and I want to use my current one to make a bitchin' tate setup. Problem is I have no idea how I can mount it or what I can use as a stand. A wall mount is unfortunately not an option in my apartment.
What I would like to do is keep it on top of my entertainment center as it is now, just... tate. But I don't know how I can get it to stand up that way. The best possible scenario would be something that would allow me to easily switch between a hori and tate setup.
Does anyone have any ideas for what I could do? Does anyone have their own big HDTV tate-ed? How did you do it?

You will need a large mount, just one with a built-in base (look for a "stand" that rotates, though a really brief search only found fixed models). Hope the panel type fares well with being tated - look at it from the side to see if you'll be able to deal with any color or brightness shifts.

Won't the aspect be whacked? Hope the viewing angle is good too...
Just hang the fucker by twine or however. Time to grow up, post when you're finished.

I set it on the floor tate-ed last night to make sure there weren't any issues with the picture, looks great. Unfortunately though I haven't found a suitable stand yet, not even a non rotating one. I may end up having to build something myself.Ed Oscuro wrote:You will need a large mount, just one with a built-in base (look for a "stand" that rotates, though a really brief search only found fixed models). Aspect can be changed with zoom modes, so it's fine. I'm not one of those weirdos who uses the "stretch" setting.mosey wrote:Won't the aspect be whacked? Hope the viewing angle is good too...

Why is a wall mount not an option? Most only need 4 screws to go into drywall and a wall stud, most landlords are cool with that, easy to fix for the next renter.
Wall mounts can be had for $20 too.

It's less to do with the landlord and more to do with the weird way my apartment is laid out. My living room doesn't have any flat walls; two walls are huge windows, one is actually a giant sliding door, and the other is the kitchen bar. So whatever I do it has to be free standing.

I'm looking into something too and I was referred to this stand when I asked elsewhere. Mind the weight limit!

That is almost exactly what I wanted, but $200 is a bit out of my price range.StarCreator wrote:I'm looking into something too and I was referred to this stand when I asked elsewhere. Mind the weight limit!
So... I made my own tonight:

I approve! Does the lip at the bottom block part of the view, though? Also, what were those pieces originally for? A kind of user-assembled shelf kit?

That's actually really nice. Inspiring stuff!
Also been looking at those super expensive TV stands for a future tate setup, shaking my head at those prices.
It's a bit hard to see since everything is black but do those two arms halfway up just support the TV to get the right angle or is it more complicated than that?

Re: How can I Tate My 37 inch HDTV
Thanks everyone! Once I get everything set up and into the entertainment center itself I'll post the final pics, but rewiring has been a nightmare. I spent about 4 hours rewiring last night and it's still not finished, because I own way too much shit.
And yeah, that's exactly right, they were parts used for building work shelves.
The lip doesn't block it at all luckily, it's a perfect fit. Just got lucky that the parts happened to be the perfect size.Ed Oscuro wrote:I approve! Does the lip at the bottom block part of the view, though? Also, what were those pieces originally for? A kind of user-assembled shelf kit?

That's right yeah, it's there to get the TV at the right angle. The placing was important though, you can see there I placed it right next to the support bar. That's because with the TV resting on the arms all the weight is shifted there, so I wanted to make sure it would remain stable and not bend or anything. That TV is actually quite heavy.Ji-L87 wrote:It's a bit hard to see since everything is black but do those two arms halfway up just support the TV to get the right angle or is it more complicated than that?
So all of those parts are purchased individually actually. There was a section in my hardware store that sold all kinds of different pieces to make custom shelves. The big metal piece was the most expensive at $10, the other parts ranged from $1 to $5 each. In the end the whole thing ran me about $40.drauch wrote:Looks nice. Good job, man. Nice idea, where exactly do you plan on setting it up in your space?
I would imagine if you're sitting or standing right next to it it's a bit too tall to take in?

It's going right where it used to be on top of my entertainment center. I already set it there last night, but there are wires strewn everywhere so I didn't want to take pics of it yet lol.alamone wrote:Nice idea, where exactly do you plan on setting it up in your space?

My entertainment center is kind of low to the ground actually, so sitting on the couch the tate is actually at the perfect height. tried out some Raiden Fighters Jet on it last night and it was godly. I'll post pics of the final setup when it's finished.

You should totally see if you can organize a parts list and a step-by-step on how to put that together, looks neat!
