Hello ~

Post by SaigonAlice »

I joined this forum in hopes of learning more about shmups games. So far I've only played Touhou and quite enjoyed it because of the pretty patterns, catchy music and East Asian theme, but I've tried Dodonpachi and Super R-Type as well. Apparently a lot of the users here are extremely proficient in shmups. Me? I can't even come close, though I'd like to get better and better through this forum.

Thank you.

Welcome!

You should probably check out the Strategy forums then for your games of choice as there's good information there, also watch the STG Weekly shows and youtube videos as these often have little nuggets of information that can be helpful.

You can also ask for requests. Persistence is the key. In r-type you will find a path. Touhou usually means bullet hell so you can try the toaplan/ cave games. Death smiles is nice. Free trial version on ios to.

Ah, thanks for the advice.

I think the problem with me an R-Type is that I'm not aware of the exact hitbox, so I get destroyed often. I've heard of Deathsmiles and it looks cool, I'll check that out too.

I have an account on Osu, actually.

In R-Type, your hitbox is basically your whole ship, really. It's not like touhou or other bullet hells where it's somewhere in the center.

And welcome!

Yeah, if it isn't a bullet hell, it's safe to say that the entire ship is the hitbox.

Ah I see, thank you. Super R-type movement feels a bit stiff and then there's this orb I find attached to me which does something?

The Orb is actually what's firing the pickups you get. It can also be used as a shield of sorts. It can be fired away from the ship and you can even attach it to the rear. There are other small option orbs you get that can be used offensively as well.

Batsugun normal's hitbox isn't quite the entire ship, but it's a very large chunk of it, you can't really graze bullets. Batsugun Special Version has a tiny hitbox though and is great fun - it's very forgiving for arcade game standards and is a great entry to more bullet hell shmups that play differently than Touhou. The difference between Batsugun vs Batsugun Special's hitbox sizes is similar to the original Donpachi's hitbox size vs DoDonpachi, a noticeable drop in hitbox size in the sequel.

The orb is called the force btw and it's a central mechanic to r-type's gameplay. In normal r-type it can be attached to the back and then used to cover your back as you blast through scrolling levels or it can be attached to the front and block some incoming fire (note most boss attacks and lasers from other r-type ships aren't blocked). You can also shoot it out to do damage and if you press the force button it will come back. If it is detached it continues to fire which can be handy as it creates a lane of fire between you and a target. Play around with it and try the original first. There are other forces in other r-type games that operate differently some do increased damage when not attached for instance. Btw the S power ups increase the speed of your ship.

Welcome aboard! I was also going to say about R-Type is that the same button that releases the Force pod also "attracts" it back to your ship, so you can often be used as a projectile weapon, and "volley" it toward enemies to deal them damage. But since it's also a shield that can absorb some incoming fire and take out the smaller "popcorn" enemies, you'll want to time those volleys well to avoid getting cornered by too many small ships and no protection. It'll take some time to get the hang of it, but once you do, I'm sure you'll find it to be an interesting play mechanic.
