Are you training yourself on a game right now?
The PSP is killing my shmup time. It seems like all my free-time lately is just too precious to do much more than rest and the handheld is a nice little "lay in bed" alternative. Between work, girlfriend and random bullshit I seem to never get in the shmup time I want to.
You know, for games that only take a few minutes to pick up and play, it sure is hard to find time to actually play them.

I really haven't practiced on any shmups lately, however, one game I really want to play is Eliminate Down.
Or mabye Axelay on Hard.
Or Space Megaforce on Tricky.
Or Wings of Wor on Hard.
One thing I do know, I seem to be losing my Shmup Luster. Mabye I should try to break 3mil in Tumiki Fighters...

Strikers 1945 III. MAME and save states make 2nd round training quite possible. In fact, if I could piece together all my perfect practice plays and come up with a perfect bomb distribution, I'm sure I could clear the game! Then maybe I'll be able to snatch a pebble from BER's hand...
For a while I got really into Gunbird 2 again and figured out some non-bombing tactics, but my cousin's college arcade only has Strikers 1945 III, and I thought if I chose that, I'd be training to show off to others and not just to myself (which has happened, and I've even met the guy who got up to 2-2). That, and Gunbird 2's ridiculous bullet speed in the 2nd round makes me absolutely convinced that it's not really meant to be played... just a bonus or novelty, really...
I'd also like to say that the two replays of Strikers 1945 III I've downloaded haven't really helped me at all! The only thing it did for the 2nd round stages was show that non-bombing paths existed. I still had to figure them out myself. I'm not complaining that they didn't help me; I'm just mentioning this to do away with the notion that "replays = cheating".
Oh, and Tekken 5 on the side.

When you say the 'ps2 pal ship hitbox', are you referring to the ps2 original mode and if so does the ps2 arcade mode have the same size hitbox as the, er...arcade? I only ask cos i read a post last night where someone intimated that the arcade mode of DC gunbird 2 was significantly easier than the original mode and i was wondering if this a trait of all psikyo conversions as i only ever play yhe original modes! The vagrant wrote:strikers II PS2 pal is quite hard (and crappy)
strikers II arcade ship hitbox = .
strikers 2 ps2 pal ship hitbox = I
At the moment, (due to my short attention span i practise 2 or 3 games at any given time!) i'm trying to 1cc saturn DDP, Gunbird and Souky and failing miserably on all three counts as it happens!

Progear - I can reach (what I think is) the final stage on 1 credit and last just about long enough to admire the lovely graphics before being pulvarised by plasma death. Over 8m points though which ain't bad.
I'm totally addicted to this game right now, I'm not even playing the DS anymore.
Btw, hi.

I have a really hard time sticking with a single game for a long time. I've been meaning to sit down with a few games and learn them for a long time:
DonPachi
DoDonPachi
Fire Shark
Lightning Force
Wings of Wor
Guardian Force
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
Sengoku Blade
Game Tengoku
Salamander
Salamander 2
All of those games feel within my ability to 1CC, I just haven't had the initiative to dedicate myself to any. And two of those games (Fire Shark and JOP), I've gotten to the last level, so it shouldn't be too much work before the 1CC is mine.
I also just got a bunch of fighting games. I should probably practice X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown 4, and Fighters Megamix.

Absolutely same problem. Here's my list:alpha5099 wrote:I have a really hard time sticking with a single game for a long time. I've been meaning to sit down with a few games and learn them for a long time:
DonPachi
Border Down
Thunder Force 3
Zero Gunner 2
But also serious playing (without the intention of ever 1cc'ing)
Battle Garegga (as always)
Samurai Aces and Blade
ESPgaluda
Raiden DX
eh, a few others, can't recall...
The thing is, I know I should just stick to one, but I tend to get distracted.

Eugenics: you know it's right!
Shmups are definitely great for the ADD-crowd. Fire 'em up for 10 minutes, blast the shit out of some mothership, kaboom. No long stories, no longterm commitment. Shmups are the one night stands and booty calls of gaming.CMoon wrote:The thing is, I know I should just stick to one, but I tend to get distracted.
I'm in Rocky mode I guess.
MAME
-Gigawing. Time to stop bullshitting around and 1cc this bitch.
-Mars Matrix. See above.
PS2
-ESPGaluda Arrange Mode. It's not THAT impossible is it? o_x
-Super Monkey Ball DX. Trying to clear the Expert courses. And yes, the port does suck in comparison to the XBOX/GC versions. >_<
-beatmaniaIIDX. Improvement is coming slowly, but surely. murmur twins 7KEY can still go to hell.
-pop'n music. At a lesser frequency than IIDX, mostly because my Ransai ASC is too loud for me to play at 1 AM ._.
Arcade
-ESPGaluda. Maybe I just like showing off since like no one else plays this game, much less reach Stage 5-1 on one credit..
-Ultracade (Truxton II, E.D.F., Eco Fighters, OutZone). Trying to better my high scores on various machines.
-Gigawing. Same reason as above. Maybe no one plays that, either. -_-
-DDR. Sorta regained my confidence in this game when I actually ranked in on POP4.
-IIDX again. I make less of an ass of myself on this game than I used to, but I'm still garbage compared to other players in the area.
DC
-Chaos Field, but that's on undetermined hold because at the times when I should be playing CF, I'm playing IIDX :B
Saturn
-Souky. Now that I have more of a grasp on how to control rank, I've been getting farther.
When Trizeal ships, I'm gonna play the living shit out of it.

I'm supposed to be working on Dragon Blaze, but there are so many distractions (apart from work and the kids): Mario Kart DS, Tengoku, Truxton, progressive death metal... I should be at level 1-5 by now; instead all my good runs are ending at 1-4 because I keep getting that flying mushroom level last.

Air Gallet on Mame. Played it purly by accident but turned out to be a very nice shooter with nice graphics and excellent music, challenging bosses too. Im not sure about the title screen speech though "Air gallet will blow your socks off" erm

I just started back on Gradius Gaiden and I can get to the boss of Stage 4, even though I've gotten much farther a couple months ago before I stopped playing. I've got a shitload of school work to due but once winter break comes I'm gonna try for a 1CC or I'll atleast see how far I can push myself. I also want to start back up on Border Down.
I thought a 1cc was more than possible 'till I hit this stage. I'm using practise to try and get some sort of grip on it, but damn, hard isn't the word. I hate the boss, it's thrown the flow of the game off a bit for me, but I'm not ready to give up just yet.Right now my goal is just to get past stage 3-1 in Shikigami 2 on 1 credit. To 1cc the game is likely beyond my abilities, though one day I'll try to complete the game with the credits allotted.
Also working on DDP, now hitting stage four regularily on one credit so there's hope there for at least a first loop clear.
MAME: Viewpoint. I'll get to Stage 4 someday!
PS2: beatmaniaIIDX. I'm pretty much forcing myself to relearn the game.
After a while, I'm planning to jump back into Trizeal and finally clear the sucker. Espgaluda's Arcade Mode doesn't sound too far off, either...granted it won't be a one-life clear but whatever!

I'm currently working on both Darius Twin (SNES) & Darius Gaiden (Saturn). In both cases, I can get to the final round (top paths in both, upper mid-level path in Gaiden as well), but end up getting wiped out at that point.
In Darius Twin, I seem to have trouble w/ the crustacean-looking thing that spits out 5 rings in all directions. I am having difficulty learning its pattern so as to properly dodge his attacks.
In Darius Gaiden, I just can't seem to get the final boss taken care of on a single life - if I could accomplish that, I could 1LC the game, which would be quite an accomplishment, as far as I'm concerned!
