Power shovel simulator (got a US release)
Tempest X3 (trippy and will always stand the test of time)
Jumping flash 1 and 2 (awesome games)
Castlevania SOTN
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Doremi Fantasy the only action game on SFC!? LOL!

You ever heard of Contra, Choumakaimura, Castlevania, Assault Suits Valken, Rockman & Forte, Metroid, ...etc etc etc?

Those games should be basic knowledge, no?
I liked Rockman & Forte OK. The rest I could live without.

One thing I didn't mention, for the guy who didn't like it: Mr. Driller takes a little while to 'get.' It's kinda like with Virtua Fighter 4, it's not any fun till you play it for awhile, then it's the best game evar!!111one

might have to ebay it even though i hate the place.

I had to get Strider 1/2 off Ebay, thanks to bid snipers I paid 35 bucks for it, but it arrived in excellent shape, and the games are both excellent, so it was money well spent. Strider 2 is much easier than the original, but the action is still pretty kickass. Go for it if you can find one for a fair price on Ebay.

I found that Strider 2 is harder. I have been able to get a 1CC on Strider (unless I screw up in the anti-grav room) but still have not been able to attain one in Strider 2.

The last stage is quite challenging (or at least I always manage to screw up somewhere), as is going through all the stages (rather than skipping 2 of the first 3 or skipping 00). Add to that the fact that the sequel is far less forgiving in mistakes since each bar of life is now considered a "life," essentially meaning that you only get 1 life rather than 3. And boost, while very effective, is not quite on the same level as having 2 options in the original. These all add up to a more difficult game I feel.

Of course, Strider 2 offers infinite continues along with having restarts from where you died rather than the checkpoints of the original (and no "beginning of stage" restarts for the last stages like in Cannon Dancer) so people who abuse continues can breeze through the game in 15 minutes.

Blood omen and Broken helix both great action/adventure games with brilliant plots and amazing storyline/dialogue.

both look ugly as hell tho but just look past the graphics and play the damn things and you'll get hooked worse than crack!
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..

Lots of good 'uns mentioned so far, except for:

Internal Section

It's not technically a shmup (depending on your own personal definition, of course), but it is plenty shooty.

Along the same lines, N2O is a lot of fun as well.

I love that game. Also Thrasher:Skate and Destroy, the best skateboarding game ever made and MDK (MISSION: DISPENSE KINDNESS!)
Feedback will set you free.

I guess I was harsh on the original, but I like that game quite a bit too. It's just I feel two and up are much better. From what I heard, the DS Mr. Driller is very similar to Mr. Driller 2 and has the exact same time attack from the GBA Mr. Driller 2 (that time attack does rock, though). Neon, you're playing Mr. Driller Ace on emulator right? I have the real game and it doesn't run slowly at all. There doesn't seem to be a loss of speed compared to the arcade either. I haven't compared them side by side, but considering how smoothly the GBA game runs compared to the Drill Land GCN (which I also have. Drill Land is quite good and definatly the Mr. Driller game to get if you are looking for variety. It has memory card problems with Freeloader, though), I think you are wrong about Ace being slower. In fact, the GBC Mr. Driller 1 runs very fast too. I sincerely doubt that Mr. Driller Drill Spirits runs slow compared to the arcade versions.

Here are some videos of Mr. Driller Drill Spirits

A video of Mr. Driller Ace

Videos of the PSX Mr Driller 1

Here are some PS1 Non-Shmups I recommend:

Metal Gear Solid
Hot Shots Golf 1
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Tomba 2
Tempest X
Ridge Racer (dirt cheap)
Ridge Racer R4
Wipeout XL
Jumping Flash
Jumping Flash 2
Ape Escape

as far as driving games, IGN says Ridge Racer Type 4 is second only to Gran Turismo 2. true?

GT2 is more of a sim game and R4 is more arcade like, so it's not really a fair comparison. However, since I like arcade style game, I prefer R4. However, which one you like better depends on what you prefer in driving games. However, if you looking for good arcade physics in arcade mode, steer clear of GT2. The "arcade" physics are not very good. However, I don't think R4 is the best racing game out there, since there are plenty of other quality racing games out there.

Gran Turismo is a driving simulation.

Ridge Racer is a racing game.

They are two distinct sub-genres that play quite differently from one another.

For arcade racers, R4 is tops, no question. The powersliding is also very easy and perfect for beginners. The other RR games feature much stricter drifting. Also, R4 has by far the best menu presentation of any racer on the PS and reeks of style. The visuals are possibly the best on the PS, rivalled only by Omega Boost. Music is topnotch house and trance, definitely lighter than the trance in the first RR. The streaklined replay of races can almost look PS2-like. Replay value is very high since you have plenty of times to beat on the now-defunct official Namco R4 time attack.

That said, many people still feel that Rage Racer is preferrable to R4 since the fastest cars go faster than the fastest cars in R4 (although that might be hard to believe) and manual driving is enforced to even completely beat the game, let alone to get the fastest lap times. However, it's definitely a lot more repetitive.

Anyway, I'd be glad to answer any more RR questions.

Heh, a month or so ago I spent an entire day playing only the Ridge Racer Hi-Spec demo that comes with Ridge Racer Type 4. It was like crack. Got some pretty good times on it, too.

...I guess, I haven't got any times by others players to compare to. And come to think of it, I never even plugged in my memory card while playing it so I can't check what my times were.

Nope, R4 was critically acclaimed by the press (likely because it looked better than anything else on the PS at the time) although everybody was talking about how it couldn't surpass the great GT series (even though the gameplay couldn't be more different). To be honest, the Jogcon, which debuted with R4, sucks as a controller since it's too sensitive. The old Negcon is a lot better, as is the regular PS controller.

Check out that mechanical Commie caterpillar again -- its weapons were the symbols of the Soviet Union! I've always liked that bit.

I remember a few years ago I forced myself to like the Gran Turismo games, but then I came to my senses and realized they were just boring as hell. I don't want to customize the rims of my tires or buy grills, I want to race.

That said, Ridge Racer 4 blows the socks off any GT, IMHO. Wonderful soundtrack, too.

Yup, it's the only RR game on the PS to be able to use the analog sticks. I still find that the d-pad gives me more precise movements though, which is why my best times were all achieved on a d-pad.

You've been getting better for the last couple of years but sometimes you still haven't the first clue as to what you're talking about.

I see you've joined TFP. Try actually playing the games in TekCadet's Definitive Super Famicom Soft Selection thread and report back to us. Seriously man, I only play action games and I never paid any attention to the 16 bit era until the 32 bit era was almost done. So it's not like I'm some Nintendo latchkey child lost in sentimental magicland when I say that the SNES is pretty much tied with the PS1 in regards to having the largest library of sweetass action games.

Pa

PS: The PC Engine might have to be included for a three way tie.
Somehow I missed this post. Thankfully you're right, there were a few gems on that list. Wouldn't tie it with the PS just yet but I'll look into it more.
