Correct cables for my BVM-A?

Post by spaceape »

Hi. :)

I need a bit of help getting the correct cables for my Sony BVM and SNES Mini (NTSC). I've looked on http://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk and they have two types of cables for connecting my monitor to RGB, one with and one without sync stripper.

The SNES cable also has two sync variants. One with composite video and one with composite sync.

For a BVM you can get the breakout cable without a stripper.

Thank you. I just don't want the screen to go all crazy. :)

Did you omit the splitter with your pvm/bvm monitors? Does it matter if the console rgb cable is with composite video or composite sync? Composite video sync and no sync stripper sounds like the safest way to go.

Not terribly much information about this type of stuff on the web. :?

it does not. The BVM accepts both just fine - that's why you need no stripper.

This guy also advice against using a sync stripper:

What about for consumer tv's. If i need to be 100% sure it will work on all sets. Does the sync type matter then?

Thanks so much for helping this newbie out. :)

no. Clean Sync works on all devices. Composite video works on all consumer sets and selected professional displays.

Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Switching between the BVM and a consumer set is as easy as plugging a different cable into the SNES. S-Video and composite (video on one wire) cables for the SNES are cheap as can be.

He was refering to consumer TV sets with RGB inputs. Europe FTW!

Sure, but he asked about "all consumer sets" and you mentioned composite video yourself.

Of course if RGB is available I agree that dropping composite altogether, when possible, is very helpful.

Im of course talking about the two sync types for RGB cables and not whether to use a Composite, S-Video or RGB video signal. If there exists any doubt.

I most admit that im still a bit confused about this answer:
no. Clean Sync works on all devices. Composite video works on all consumer sets and selected professional displays.
Does this mean that composite sync will work on all consumer tv's and that composite video sync also work on all consumer tv's but not necessarily on all monitors?

So does this mean that composite video sync is actually less compatible than composite sync?

The reason i ask is because im selling two of my RGB modded SNES mini consoles and want to make sure that the cables i acquire for them will work with all tv set's.

One of the three RGB modded SNES Mini consoles i keep for myself. To use that together with my BVM as i understand it i can use a console RGB cable with composite sync (or RAW) and an RGB breakout without a splitter for connecting to the BVM. Still not sure if the one with a splitter will work but my hunch say no as the guy in the youtube video pointed this out with his PVM (although he might be wrong).

Ah right - I was following that discussion earlier. I really wish there was a clearer couple of terms than "clean sync" and "composite video" :?

I just tried one of the NTSC/CSYNC cables ordered from http://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk on my NTSC RGB modded SNES Mini but only got flicker.

Image

Then i put the Pal cable in (composite video sync i guess) and it worked perfectly. Hmm but i thought you needed NTSC cables for NTSC consoles and PAL for PAL?

You think i get issues because of the sync type or because it's an NTSC cable? BTW. the B&O MX7000 i tested it on can do both 50HZ and 60HZ.

I guess i should just have ordered all PAL cables. :|

That depends on how the RGB mod on your SNES Mini was done.

It does the same on all three Mini's. So i guess i need to return the cables and get all pal.

I haven't yet tried it on my BVM as i still need a connection cable for the control box. But since i need to sell two of the mini's i can't accept those cables from retrocables.

I guess i'll need to pick composite video sync next time just to be on the safe side. Im glad i didn't order the BVM sync stripper cable as im sure it wouldn't give me anything but trouble.

But i guess i'll have enough of a cable hell to look forward too in the future since i also have a Japanese Saturn, Dreamcast and US N64 on the way. Hehe. Image

I've already pre-ordered a Hanzo vga box and vga to component adapter for my dreamcast.

Hmm it seems none of the modders i bought from had figured out how to enable composite sync on their consoles.

Like this:
http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:s ... re_for_rgb

http://www.gamesx.com/rgbadd/snes2rgb.htm

So im guessing an NTSC cable is still in order. Just not one with csync unless i want to further mod the consoles (which i don't)
