PS1 None Shmups
ok after having got rid of my ps2 and resorting to playing only ps1 and my ds, i've decided to look round for a few none shmups to dable in occasionally. however i'm not really that up on the games that were released towards the end of the ps1's life as i was playing on my dc, ps2, etc.
just wondering if any of you can recommend some good action, puzzle, driving, any other than shmup games that can still stand the test of time. i have no real interest in graphic but i don't like playing games with unstable frame rates (n64 i'm looking at you...)
also please recommend any imports as i'm looking to start both collectiong ps1 2d games and anything else of interest not released here. just not oober rare or expensive eh?

Get Gunner Heaven, released as Rapid Reload in the UK. Awesome 2D action á la Gunstars/Slugs.

Hmmm... good question. I recently cleared out my collection of many non-shmups and I realize that I only have one left for PS1, a Disney side-scroller for my kids. So I hope people will have some good suggestions, especially for puzzle games.
One obvious suggestion: Final Fantasy Tactics. Never got into it myself because of the time commitment required, but people really like this game.

Syndicate Wars. A stunning update of an all-time classic, but infinitely better with a PS mouse.
Any Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move game if you don't already have one.
And don't laugh, but I always found the original Jet Rider game to be really fun, put a lot of time into this when it was first released. Looks dated now, and is quite a challenge to control to start with, but there's a good game underneath the scrappy presentation.

You mean Jet Moto? I love that game. I liked the sequel too, though I don't like how it has less oppoents. Also, if you plan to get the sequel, stay away from the Greatests Hits version. The Greatest Hits version is actually different with five oppoents during races instead of ten, the classic Jet Moto courses available from the start, and the name of one of the last courses censored. The actual title of the Greatest Hits Jet Moto 2 is "Jet Moto 2 Champion Edition". It's only shown on the title screen, though. Thankfully, the Gratest Hits for Jet Moto 1 wasn't altered.Marc wrote: And don't laugh, but I always found the original Jet Rider game to be really fun, put a lot of time into this when it was first released. is twisted metal the car combat games? i had one of those for the dc and thought it was terrible but maybe the ps1 one is different. i think a bust a move game is a must as i got rid of it a long time ago... for no reason that i can see.
anyone know about mr driller games for ps1? i don't think tjhat there was a pal one but not 100% sure.
oh and she said dutch said, alundra kicks arse. i own it and have completed it many times.
i am finding playing rpgs tough at the minute though as they don't seem to offer anythin new or interesting for the time you have to devote to them. i'd say the last one i played and enjoyed was ff10 and that wasn't even that good. maybe fftactics would change my mind but i don't want to pay much for it and i'll have to import it to try.

So is Mr. Driller for the PS1 better than the DS game? I played the latter and got sort of bored with it-- and I really like puzzle games generally.PaCrappa wrote:Being pretty much a dead tie between the SNES/SFC and the PS1 for the system with the most awesome games, there are too many nonshmups (none means zero BTW) to list. So just get Mr Driller and forget about the rest of that stuff which will only pale in significance to the greatest game ever.

NO! The original Mr. Driller pales in comparison to its sequels (though I still like it). It's Mr. Driller G PSX that's known as one of the better games in the series. From what I heard, it's probably a safe bet that Mr. Driller G is better than Mr. Driller DS, but if you didn't like Mr. Driller DS, you might not like that one either.professor ganson wrote:So is Mr. Driller for the PS1 better than the DS game? Tunnel B1, although it is a sort of 1st person shooter, has excellent graphics for the time and looks a bit like WipEout. You can pick it up for dirt cheap too.
Also Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo is awesome.

Eh, SNES? Only if you're into RPG's, really...action games wise there's Doremi Fantasy and even if you count Tetris Attack as great, those are about it.PaCrappa wrote:Being pretty much a dead tie between the SNES/SFC and the PS1
Anyways yeah, as far as exclusives go there's Mr. Driller G, Umihara Kawase Shun, Money Puzzle Exchanger, Metal Slug X, Samurai Shodown II, Senkyu (Battle Balls), I think Pop 'n Pop got ported to it too. Probably missing a lot, this is off the top of my head. And no, Neo AES doesn't count.

Final Fantasy VII (great RPG), Metal Gear Solid (played the crap out of this), Resident Evil 1 and 2 (you might like 3, but I haven't played it much), Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Gran Turismo 1 and 2, Ridge Racer series, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Tenchu 1 and 2, Ghost in the Shell, Bushido Blade, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, Time Crisis (GunCon game), Point Blank (GunCon game), Wipeout XL, Wipeout 3, Metal Slug X (not a perfect Neo Geo conversion, but pretty good). Lot of other games could be mentioned here, but the list would be a mile long.
Definitely try to get Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo, Wipeout XL or 3, and Resident Evil 2. All of those should be pretty cheap, and are some of the system's best games.

Doremi Fantasy the only action game on SFC!? LOL!Neon wrote:Eh, SNES? Only if you're into RPG's, really...action games wise there's Doremi Fantasy and even if you count Tetris Attack as great, those are about it.
You ever heard of Contra, Choumakaimura, Castlevania, Assault Suits Valken, Rockman & Forte, Metroid, ...etc etc etc?
Those games should be basic knowledge, no?

Megaman X4. Best in the MMX series.
Megaman Legends is like Marmite; but it's cheap so it's worth the risk. Personally, it didn't exactly hit home for me, but my brother and his friends love it (My brother's friend loves it so much he made a DnD campaign out of the concept).

You've been getting better for the last couple of years but sometimes you still haven't the first clue as to what you're talking about.Neon wrote:Eh, SNES? Only if you're into RPG's, really...action games wise there's Doremi Fantasy and even if you count Tetris Attack as great, those are about it.
I see you've joined TFP. Try actually playing the games in TekCadet's Definitive Super Famicom Soft Selection thread and report back to us. Seriously man, I only play action games and I never paid any attention to the 16 bit era until the 32 bit era was almost done. So it's not like I'm some Nintendo latchkey child lost in sentimental magicland when I say that the SNES is pretty much tied with the PS1 in regards to having the largest library of sweetass action games.
Pa
PS: The PC Engine might have to be included for a three way tie.
I certainly wouldn't say it "pales in comparison" since the gameplay is the same and there's a time attack mode. Mr Driller G offers more but it also offers alot of Japanese. Although certain iterations in the series offer more modes and more characters the first is still entirely valid and worth a hundred times the five bucks it is likely to cost.BrianC wrote:NO! Haven't played the DS Driller but it seems that the core gameplay is still intact so if you don't like that you may not like the older ones. Couldn't hurt to lay out the fiver to try the original. Which is a huge masterstroke of undeniable genius IMHO.
