Japanese TVs and RGB

So apparently, TVs sold in Europe are RGB-enabled whereas TVs sold in the US aren't.

Does anyone know what the deal is with Japanese TVs?

They are also RGB-enabled, with a scart plug that looks exactly like the Euro plug, but pins are re-arranged.

Not all TVs are RGB enabled. The link that oxtu posted is golden though... use it. Your best bet for a large-sized CRT with RGB is a Sony from Yahoo Japan. There's a model list on the page. It will require a special cable, which that guy makes/sells. Basiaclly, it's 21-pin to the Sony AV-Multi connection. If you're handy though, he's got the pinouts where you can make one yourself.

That site is a bit intimidating and unfortunately I know nothing about pinouts. I was just thinking of buying a new 25 or 29 inch Sony when I got back and keeping it on its side permanently. Maybe if I check Sony's site they'll mention in the specsheets whether the TV is RGB-enabled or not.

Well, the only Sony TV's that have RGB are the ones that have AV Multi. I've never heard of any Japanese ones with 21-pin RGB (not recently anyway) but I could be wrong. If you get one listed at RGB Hospice, you'll need to buy a converter for it.

Most new Japanese TVs don't do RGB, especially widescreen models. They phased it out in favour of component. Luckily though in Japan your odds of finding a sales guy who knows the difference between RGB and component are much better than, say, Australia, where they're convinced they're the same.

Many high-end TVs, especially plasmas, do RGB, but often only at VGA (31kHz) or greater resolutions, not the game-friendly 15kHz. Plasma and LCD suck for retro gaming anyway, try and find an old tube.

I found a 28" widescreen TEAC, brand new, with SCART input. Works a treat for RGB, but it sucks for everything else...
