Playstation Now - New PS1/2/3 Streaming Service

Post by Friendly »

Announced at CES today. It's going to be subscription based and will work on all sorts of devices.

Not really interested myself because I'm quite a fan of this whole ownership concept, which this removes. I also have some doubts about how well quicker paced games that require quick reactions will fare, but we'll see. Maybe it'll be a nice way to check out console games to help decide if to buy or not.

Well, the important things are latency and bandwidth. I used to use OnLive when all I had was an assy netbook that couldn't run shit -- some games were pretty okay, some were embarrassing [I wonder what idiot's idea it was to put Street Fighter 4 on the service -- it perfectly highlights all the issues with this type of system].

I'm cautiously excited maybe.

it would be interesting if they were sending drawing instructions instead of video though [maybe less bandwidth used, no compression artifacts], although you'd need sufficiently powerful target hardware to render it, and you'd still need to stream all that texture data, and maybe scene complexity would just render my whole idea moot

Yeah, that was my first thought, haha. But it's to be expected, Sony would probably like [read: require] you to be using their hardware, and that's a hell of a lot harder to ensure with PCs.

So, I don't mean to be really dense, but what exactly is this? If you have a game on your ps3 you can play it remotely on your vita? I not only don't understand it logistically, I don't get the specifics either. Is this really cool, or is it really useless?

Good luck selling this to those who are stuck with 1.5mb DSL connections.

it's a game streaming service..sony have massive server farms hosting the sony library of games.you can then play them on your sony product of choice via streaming. personally i would rather have real backwards compatibilty but i might bite anyway as i never had a ps3 and still want to play stuff like mgs4 and last of us.

I'd like to see someone attempt an STG all clear on a cloud gaming service.

Yeah, I guess the important question will be how much you pay for the service and how shitty the lag is.

This would be a fantastic replacement for "buy a PSX3 and rent Persona 5" if it only cost $5 bux and could be done on a pc. But it isn't going to cost 5 bux is it. And it isn't going to be usable on a PC. And they're not gonna have Persona 5 on it.

Too many coincidences of wants there for it to come through, even for games that can tolerate high latency and crummy streamed video. This whole "cloud" fetish is the weirdest thing..
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

OnLive wasn't too bad when it was a thing, and it's been a few years, so maybe they've gotten the technology to a point where it's even better.

Obviously the fruits of the Gaikai acquisition, in addition to PS Vita Remote Play, which was probably the proving grounds.

This sounds like it would work great IF (and it's a big if) you have a decent connection for it, but given the fact that so may people still have terrible Internet connections with bandwidth caps, I don't see it catching on quite the way Sony would like it to.

It's interesting to see where the industry is going in fundamentally different directions all at once. BTW, lag issues will pretty much guarantee that you'll never ever get games streamed (in the current sense, i.e. rendered) while supporting VR. However I think that basic latency issues still indicate that locally-rendered games will still be a major part of gaming for the foreseeable future.

VR <- old game system lag - (better case) PC game lag - current console gaming lag -> PlayStation Now (and other streaming services)

I'm not hoping for much especially with my mediocre BT connection.

It's a nice thing to have on top of the digital remakes and emulation we have atm, my fear is that the industry ditching everything for the cloud, since it gives them control and service monetisation.

Still I like the idea of a 2nd alternative revenue stream for games just like movies, Normal release would be equivalent to Cinema while Cloud would be Netflix / Cable (watched on a flickering black and white wooden TV that you'd have to hit every minute to fix the picture)

So it's on in the UK for PC now, am I right? How's VF5: Final Showdown via this?
