If it's just a straight port, what exactly is the appeal of having it on Xbox? Is it just the packaging? Possibility of graphics redone in HD?

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
I'm as big of a fan of the idea of "new old art" as any with Cave games. I would be the first to ask for a scan, but realistically I think we're better off approaching the original concept artist with the idea of a small kickstarter for a short run Progear art book or single run magazine/pdf/whatever. We'd end up with a much better product. From a software angle I'll take mame or real hardware ANY DAY over a silly assed console port. Absolute silly assed. There's not even any added convenience, it's just straight up silly ass.

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
That would be an expensive convenience. Both can already be done between these forums and mame inp files. If it was something Cave developed where they made a new mode I'd be wowed but a straight port by Capcom has one way to go compared to mame or the real hardware, that's downhill. I think it would make more sense to go the cheapo ios route. More sales, more convenience, and it would really be a different game if you controlled the ship speed. But anyway, it's hard for me to tell just what Capcom could even do with it. Did Cave give them the source? If not they can't do a damn thing but emulation and at best the things you mentioned. If they got the source who knows what they would do.

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
You can get an arcade stick setup on a PC. You can even have it have a separate output to S-Video and a CRT tv and have it look how it was intended which is not what you'd get on your hdtv and xbox. Probably with less lag than a new console too but I wouldn't know, don't own one. An iphone at least adds convenience meaning, I've already been playing the game at home for over a decade and with ios I could play it on a plane.
Re: Progear release a possibility?!
The XBox 360 natively supports the following video outputs: Composite, S-Video, Component, RGB-Scart, VGA and HDMI (with a dozen resolutions spanning 480i to 1080p). I regularly use S-Video when playing on my tate'd CRTs.Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:You can get an arcade stick setup on a PC. Re: Progear release a possibility?!
Having the game playable in a legal format that you can purchase at least makes emulation justifiable. It'd be nice to be able to support Cave/Capcom for Progear rather than just emulating it. An arrange mode would be nice though and honestly I don't think any of their Xbox releases haven't had Arrange modes have they? A few XBLA ports like Ikaruga I guess were more bare-bones though, and if Capcom wants it on the cheap then I suppose it's possible a release would be barebones...Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:That would be an expensive convenience. Every single iPhone port of a Cave game essentially boils down to a version that you'd rather play with an actual stick + buttons. God help you if you try to play something like Galuda 2 or DFK seriously on an iPhone with all those horrid virtual buttons. An iphone at least adds convenience meaning
The iPhone ports are really more there to be somewhat amusing second-best substitutes for when you can't be playing the real thing. Given a choice, I would never choose an iPhone port over the real game. Heck, even DDP Max which was made for phone controls in mind would play better with a stick (and a button to control movement speed). Way too easy for a finger to slip, among other issues.

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
That's nice to know but for those of us here typing on a PC, doesn't change my stance. I already have Progear with good controls/saves/inp/whatever. I even have the pcb. 12 years down the line I think you need a new mode or portability to make a release, that or released as part of a library. Maybe they will take the top 20 games and make that 1 release. Now that would be interesting.Kiken wrote:The XBox 360 natively supports the following video outputs: Composite, S-Video, Component, RGB-Scart, VGA and HDMI (with a dozen resolutions spanning 480i to 1080p). Man the quoting stuff on this board really sucks. Anyway if you don't feel comfortable or justified playing mame then delete the whole thing and all your roms off your hard drive. Let me know when it's cleared.BareknuckleRoo wrote:

Absolutely they suck compared to real controls. But....I already have all the games with real controls, and I can't bring them with me when I travel. That's my whole point.BareknuckleRoo wrote:

I can appreciate buying it just to support Cave, I get that. But that and the art are as far as it goes. Pretty awkward purchase. I mean even if I owned it I'd rather just play the original code.

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
You have deliberately missed the point. It's nice and convenient to emulate when it's the only available way to play, but ideally you should try to own a copy (which isn't always feasible like when the only copies are on arcade boards meant/priced more for arcade owners rather than individual players).Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:Anyway if you don't feel comfortable or justified playing mame then delete the whole thing and all your roms off your hard drive. Re: Progear release a possibility?!
I'm not missing any point. I do see the point in buying it just to support Cave, but it's a stupid situation to buy a port and shelve it and play what I already have. It would be like already owning an album on flac and then buying the downloadable mp3s from a band's website "as a donation". Cave should just set up a paypal and save themselves the sweat. And bypass Capcom because who gives a shit if they bought a license.

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
do you refuse to buy all ported CAVE games and do you only buy original hardware or use mame? That's nice that you have a great PC setup and the PCB.. but if they ported it, do you really think their target audience would be you and all the people who already own the original hardware?Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:That's nice to know but for those of us here typing on a PC, doesn't change my stance. sure, you're a hardcore fan and you can afford the actual arcade hardware.. but what about the people who want to pay to play the game with ease and not worry about a suicide battery dying, learning how to solder/resolder it, or configuring mame? Also, to these types of consumers who want to actually "own" the game $10 - $90 > $350.
I own every CAVE port on 360, and it's mainly due to ease of access and price. I can't afford to spend $700 on a Ketsui board, therefore, I'm content with a $60-80 xbox 360/ps3 port. Same goes for Mushihimesama Futari BL... if I were even able to find a black label PCB, I surely couldn't afford to buy it (though I'd love to own the original hardware).
FYI - I own a progear board too. I just don't agree with your post(s).

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
No this has nothing to do with ports in general. It only has to do with Progear considering its age, emulation status and the likeliness of any added benefit if it's Capcom releasing it. If your computer can't run cps2 in December 2013 then my only response is one word: "dude".
Obviously if Cave made it they would put in a new mode like every port they've done and that would be interesting, or HD or something. If Capcom releases it and they don't have the source then you are buying a downgrade plain and simple.

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
I actually don't play any shooters in MAME because for some reason my desktop doesn't pickup the USB connection on my 4 sticks and I struggle to configure it correctly/download the correct version. I used to mess around with joy2key but after my last reformat I haven't been able to get that to sync correctly either. I also despise using a keyboard. I guess it's just laziness... but if I didn't have the original hardware, I'd easily take a downgraded version by Capcom (w/o original source) for $10-$90 (being either digital or retail). I think gamers know that they aren't getting an arcade perfect port, and if they wanted it... I would also suggest the original hardware. I don't think that's what anyone here is asking for though.
I knew the US version of DS was faaaaaar away from being arcade perfect, but that didn't stop me nor other gamers from buying it.
overall, it wouldn't be a great business move on Capcom's part, but it would sure make me (if I didn't have the board) and other gamers happy
in a perfect world, CAVE would port this with a new arrange mode.

Still voting Progear every day. Yesterday it seemed to be down to 2nd place, but it bumped back up for a tie with first.
speaking of - I finally made the hi-score thread and I died right before the last boss. That 1CC is just in sight

I voted Progear again, that CVS2 spam is ridiculous though, I could have sworn that 3rd Strike would stay as the top fg with the advantage it had.

Voting for Strider 2 again

Re: Progear release a possibility?!
19XX 25%
Progear 24%
CVS2 21%
CVS2 has been gaining several percentage points per day. The fighting game community as a whole seems to have abandoned the other fighting games and are putting all of their votes towards CVS2 while we are still splitting the shmup votes between two games.
This keeps up, neither of the shmups are going to win the poll.
