Guys, got some travelling to do tomorrow and want to pick up one of the M2 releases for the journey. If you had to pick just one, which would you say is the best to go for?
I don't like Ecco so leave that one out. Many thanks.
Super Hang-On is the one that has gotten the most playtime for me by far. It's fast, it's fun, it's able to keep my attention longer than Space Harrier [which would be my runner up] can.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
I would say go for the Super Scaler games (Super Hang On, Space Harrier, and Galaxy Force II) first, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the 3D in Shinobi III, Sonic, and Streets of Rage (which are also very nice ports of the Genesis originals).

This is exactly what I opted to do. Finished with Super Hang On and Galaxy Force II, so I just grabbed Space Harrier and Shinobi III today, and will probably grab Sonic and Streets of Rage, next weekend.
Ok, let's whittle it down even further then. These are £4.50 each, so I'm not interested in grabbing them all. I think Sonic, Shinobi etc are nice novelties, but I'm not sure I really need to play them in 3D - just finished SIII on MD recently!
So super scaler seems sensible considering the 3D effect and that they're special ports. And of those, Galaxy Force II seems most sensible since it's never had a really great home conversion. Would you guys concur GFII is the best of the scaler set?
I have only played Galaxy Force and Super Hang-On but I would say GF2 has the better 3D effects and is the most visually impressive game. However, Super Hang-On is also very fun and has more content : several challenging courses and according to the interviews, an unlockable mode where you play all courses one after the other.
GF2 is still a blast to play, but I am not sure you would play it over and over again for hi-scores once you manage to clear it.

Yeah, Super Hang-On has the most bang for the buck, but I found all three super scalers a blast to play. Galaxy Force is defnitely the meanest in terms of difficulty. I was surprised to found out that GP Rider for GG is pretty much a port of Super Hang On. It plays very similar and even has a World Tour mode with the original courses.
At first, GF2 can seem very difficult indeed. When I picked it up, I thought the default settings for the game were incompatible with a 1CC because I kept dying at the second stage but I now managed to reach the final stage thanks to some advice.
Once you understand that the player is supposed to be accelerating almost all the time (there's an option to make the game do that without player input) and that the life jauge is not really a life bar but behaves more like a timer, you'll be making some progress.
I don't think it is frustrating but you need a specific mindset before tackling this game.

Since you played Super Hang On a lot already, then I'd opt for Galaxy Force II in that case. I don't find it frustratingly difficult at all. It took me a couple of tries to learn, but got the hang of it quickly.
Yeah, accelerating constantly in GFII really helps. Even though it looks like you're draining your energy faster, you get through the stage fast enough to make up for it.
it's just that killing enough stuff for more time while going that fast is a bit of a biiiiiitch

The post mentioned the Hang On in Shenmue. The Hang On in Shenmue is the original, which has much fewer stages (only 5), and lacks the turbo. Super Hang On offers much more in the way of levels with multiple courses and has the turbo, which makes it even more fun. I know some of these Sega releases are confusing with Afterburner II and Galaxy Force II being updates rather than full on sequels, but Super is definitely a full on sequel.
Ah, my bad. I haven't played/heard of Super Hang On, until the 3DS release, so I wasn't aware there was even a game before it. (I also skipped out on Shenmue)
So I'm finally getting a feel for Super Hang-on, took a little getting used to the analog nub on the 3DS. Super fun and the 3D is great. Not feeling Space Harrier 2 as much, but haven't spent much time on it as of yet.
Telling from that page, the 3DS Fantasy Zone even has both versions of Hot Snow (the song that differs between the US and JP version) in the sound test.
Super Hang-On is great. I'm not sure why it's so much more interesting than the first game, but that turbo button does add quite a lot to it for some reason.

Anybody know if/when NA will get After Burner 2?
That's exactly what's putting me off. Played the shit out of SHO on 360, but can't get used to the nub on this version.

Super Hang-On also has multiple courses with even the smallest one having more stages than the original Hang On course. The original arcade Hang On only has five stages.
The new Upa-Upa arrange mode was designed by Keisuke Koga, the dude who did Fantasy Zone 2 DX for the Sega Ages collection. Chibi-Tech also composed a few new tunes for Upa-Upa mode, which will be available as part of the upcoming FZ iTunes release.
Is there a relatively easy way to access the Japanese 3DS eshop from NA with a NA region 3DS? I'd really like to grab Outrun when it comes out and After Burner II while I'm at it. A quick google search didn't give me anything definitive on this.

Not possible. 3DS is 100% region locked.

We got the first ones, so I'm assuming we're getting the rest. They can't exactly be expensive to localize.
Covers some of the hidden options that are unlocked by hitting certain coin bank totals, as well as the addition of the SMS/Mark III-exclusive bosses. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they said they actually redrew the graphics to conform to the System 16 palettes and whatnot, but there's a toggle to use the original graphics instead?)
They also touch on 3D Outrun briefly, just to explain why they announced it so soon and to tell people to look forward to hearing more at a later date.
