What if SquareENIX and Cave were to merge..?

Post by Wyrmnus »

With no change to the name of the company. Just CAVE's works being taken in by SquareEnix. What RPG ideas do you think could result from it? I could see something like the world in Mushihimesama being involved with a Kingdom Hearts game. It already happened with KH 3DS. Or heck, imagine A cameo of Hibachi or Inbachi from SDOJ as a boss in a Kingdom hearts game. Just using my imagination here.

1st option: SquareEnix would finally be able to purblish its first good game in over a decade.
2nd option: What's left of Cave would be swallowed by the giant and only cheesy j-pop/otaku character designs would be left (for shitty mobile games).

Realistic option: we would just all laugh our ass off.

Reco as a Party Member in KH. It would be the first time a CAVE character would have graphics sooooo advanced. Reco would probably have a skillset based around summoning 'beetle satellites' to attack foes. Probably a healing ability, and definitely one involving her trademark bomb from Mushihimesama

Not to be boring, but thinking about how Capcom published games by Psikyo, Takumi and Cave without messing with them (bonus characters in Gunbird 2 were nice though) and assuming Square Enix would mostly do the same thing. Also, don't forget square's own Einhander (and for that matter, some of their other psx titles that were devoid of rpg elements.)

Probably too early to say, but Bravely Default might be that game. Also, thinking about the Square that made games on the PSX...whatever happened to them? They were so creative back then.

Square-Enix have announced that they intend to heavily concentrate on "free to play" games (=the opposite of free thanks to micro-transactions) on mobile devices from now on.
They have turned from being one of the best to complete shit during the past decade; total creative bankruptcy.

Even with all of Cave's business shortcomings, they'd leave behind a rather spotless track record if they went out of business now. Why soil their great legacy without any chance to prevent the inevitable?

If Hibachi became a cameo boss in the next Kingdom Hearts game, there would be a story on the evening news about an epidemic of casual gamers soiling themselves =P.

Jokes aside, I think it could actually be cool. I feel like I'm in the minority here, but I think Cave has characters and settings that, with a little work, could be very interesting in an RPG or adventure game context.

The grim, militaristic future of Ketsui where mercenary corporations develop superweapons and try to dominate the world strongly reminds me of the plot from the Ace Combat series, actually.

The insect summoning angle of Mushihimesama and the lush colorful visuals make it half of an RPG already.

The framework is all there, they would just need to flesh out the characters and adapt the plot a bit.

On Hibachi, It probably wouldn't be all that difficult depending on gameplay. Hibachi fires a stream of bullets at Sora? Probably can Superglide over em and dive in with attack combos. Reflect would probably be effective too. The boss fight would probably be done similar to Terra in KH2FM.

On the Mushihimesama idea. The game would probably be done as a third person shooter style, with some elements from Parasite Eve 2.

Good point. Though, I think that would be more likely if something like this happened anytime before the 7th Gen.

Bravely Default is certainly looking that way, if the demo is any indication. Drakengard 3 isn't too shabby either, if you're into that kind of game.

Neither of those were developed by S-E, though.

Good point; Bravely Default is by Silicon Studios. Wonder if they are going (or already have become) much like Capcom where they are mostly a stable for smaller companies and most of the major talent has already left. That said, I'm not a capcom hater like everyone else here, but it was really evident where all these smaller units (Clover, Arika, etc.) were budding off of capcom, leaving...what? Regarding S-E...I don't know if it has any real connection with Silicon Studios, or with Matrix Software Company...the developer of 4 heroes of light.

There is a point these companies do become nebulous place holders for talent that may or may not be there. My impression is that the talent that made some of the great titles on the PSX for S-E are no longer there or have become caught up in making the kind of game I'm not interested in. My assessment is about the same for Capcom except I like Monster Hunter and SF4.

I'm aware, but it was more of a comment to publishing a good title in a decade thing. I don't even know what they've developed lately anymore (outside of the FF13s).

Indeed, there were a few good games developped by Tri-Ace as well.
I just like to push the button. :P

Hopefully FF XV will be good... but damn I already hate the j-pop teenage characters.

Going back to my OP topic. Imagine Shinomura or Uemastu doing a CAVE Shooter's music. Or One of those two doing music for a Cave spinoff title, such as the Mushihimesama RPG idea.

Countless card-based spinoffs on portable systems. Side stories that are ambiguous, canon-wise.

And worst of it all, no Einhander 2.

One game idea I've had was Psychic Force prequel done as a Forgotten Worlds style STG cranked up to bullet hell, with Keith & Burn as the players. One or two of the characters from PF2010/2012 could be brought in as bosses. This would have to take place maybe a year before the PF OVA's events.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I had this idea of a spinoff STG based on Final Fantasy XI. It would center around the first expansion ( Rise of the zilart ), it would feature six stages, each of them having one of the Ark Angels as a boss, and the final boss being Eld'narche. A TLB would be either Shantotto or Prishe, in some crystal looking form. Not sure about character types yet. I do know it would have a Hyper-esqe mechanic, based on the act of storing TP in FFXI to 300% to preform more powerful weapon skills.

I'm just saying that you both have some good ideas. Together, you'd be unstoppable. He's in NY, you're in NJ. You guys need to make this happen.

Also, some things he says are different than in the EU version such as he saying "Hyper Counter Ready" when the hyper bar is filled and "An Element Daughter is approaching" when you're about to face the boss of the level. There's also the survival mode, in which there are no continues but if you get hit, you activate a bomb; kinda like an autobomb feature, similar to arrange mode in Mushihimesama. There are 4 difficulty levels: Novice, Normal, Expert, and Fearless.
